Wow, so much happened in Season Two it's tough to come up with just one or two favourites. It was the season when all the characters ventured into their first on-screen relationships (Willow/Oz, Giles/Jenny, Cordelia/Xander and of course Bangel! 😀). Kendra, Drusilla and Spike were all introduced to the show. Angel went evil and killed a whole bunch of people! And finally Joyce found out Buffy is in deed a Vampire Slayer. It was the season that made me love the show!
Okay seriously though; my Favourites are...
- Surprise:
Being a self-diagnosed Bangel Addict, I don't think that it will come as a surprise to anyone that this is my absoloute favourite episode of S2. Almost every single scene revolves around Buffy and Angel. They kiss, they exchange rings, they have a near death experience, they say they LOVE each other! 🙂 And if you stop the show right before that first clap of thunder hits and the two love birds are laying peacefully in each other's arms-- it's one of the happiest joss endings ever! 😉
Plus I love the scenes with Willow and Oz in this episode. Those two were as cute as buttons when they were first dating each other. And the awkwardness of Giles at a birthday party was a fun treat in the seriousness of the show.
- Becoming, Part 2:
I wasn't going to choose this episode until I remembered the Joyce/Spike scenes you know :silly: Alas, their comedic brilliance once again reminds me of why this show was so entertaining.
This was the first time Spike and Buffy really made a deal, that they were on the same side. Even though we didn't know it at the time, we were getting a taste of what was to come of the two-- almost like the writers were testing to see how Spike would fit into Buffy's personal and slaying life (as an allie, rather than a enemy). In any case it was fun seeing them bond over their mutual hate for Angelus. And the scenes where Joyce and Spike are forced to interact are, like I said, quite a treat for the viewer.
Other noteable scenes are the flashbacks into Angel's past, Whistler's appearance (shame we never saw him again!) and Willow coming into her own as a spell-caster. Not to mention the fight scene between Angelus and Buff: what a duel! The whole show just kept delivering in all categories, and I think earned a spot in the top 10 best in the whole series.
and my least favourite episode? Killed by Death. Ugh. With the exception of Xander finally standing up to Angelus, I absoloutely hated this episode. Creepy clowny looking monsters! Creepy child eating crazy monsters! If I wanted to be too scared to sleep at night, I would have just watched a horror movie! That show was too creepy for my tastes 😛

(1) No, some episodes were just plain bad (see the title to item (3) below).
(2) Top 3: When She Was Bad (as I remarked on that thread re your "Go To" three episodes, this is my honorable mention, as the ep is by far the best season intro ep of the seven)(this ep is Buffy with PTSD and is the companion of Normal Again); Halloween (this is the flip side to Helpless, i.e., Helpless is Buffy as "helpless" without her slayer strength while this is "helpless" in her not remembering who she is); Becoming.
(3) Ones I wish I could forget: Go Fish (if only Beer Bad were this bad, then the critics of Beer Bad might have a point); Bad Eggs, I Only Have Eyes For You, Reptile Boy, Inca Mummy Girl.

Season two is a great season and it's really hard to pick just a few episodes but I've managed to narrow it down to these.

OK, a couple people have mentioned IOHEFY as their least favorite...really? Why? I thought it was fantastic acting on the part of SMG & DB, & delved into the issue of Buffy blaming herself (then perhaps allowing herself to forgive herself?).

Completely agree. It would have been more powerful if it came before Becoming and after Go Fish. It sets up the need for Angel to forgive Buffy after she sends him to hell. Great stuff.

I Only Have Eyes For You is a good episode and close to one of my favourites for season 2. It just adds to the greatness of this season! The chemistry between Buffy and Angel in that scene is great, first hate before the possession, then love, then later revulsion (on Angels part) when they snap out of it. Didn't quite make the top 3 for me though.

Top Five:
1. Becoming, Part II - One of the most emotionally wrenching episodes ever. The final couple of scenes are truly heartbreaking. Pays off two years worth of storytelling perfectly.
2. Passion - The Angelus arc hits a high point here. Seriously, between this and the above episode, it's so close for my favourite of the season. The above ep gets my #1 choice because I feel it's more "personally" special to me, but between these two it's pretty much a tie for episode quality 🙂
3. Innocence - Moved the show into dark, epic storytelling beautifully. Boreanaz sunk his teeth into the role of Angelus with real menace.
4. I Only Have Eyes For You - Beautifully told ghost story. The conclusion with Buffy and Angel re-enacting the dead lovers' final few moments is classic.
5. Becoming, Part I - Great set-up for the following episode, and I especially loved all the flashbacks. Again it's one of those touches that gives the show a more "epic" feel.
Bottom Five:
1. Reptile Boy - Worst episode of the entire series!
2. Bad Eggs - I liked the freaky spider-demons, but once the Mother Bazaor entered the picture, the episode flushed itself down the toilet 🙁 Nothing of any particular relevance happens in this episode either. It's devoid of arc or character development.
3. Killed by Death - Der Kindestod had a lot of potential, he was pretty freaky, and I like Xander and Angel's hospital confrontation. Too bad about the rest of the episode. Worst of all was the "Power Girl" flashbacks. Didn't love how overly convenient it was that the Kindestod had killed Buffy's cousin many, many years ago either. A nonsensical, rushed way to give the Kindestod plot some relevance.
4. Go Fish - Again, some decent moments here and there, but mostly boring and silly. I hate the final shot with the demons stupidly swimming into the ocean especially. Whoever thought of that .. should've been fired from the show.
5. The Dark Age - Boring, boring, boring. The demon was laaaame as well. This was the opportunity to develop Giles' character, and it's partly successful, but he deserved a lot more!

Firstly, I have to put it out there that I'm a lover of both Ted and Bad Eggs.
I Only Have Eyes For You is probably my all time favourite, I can't fault a single thing about this episode. I love that Giles believes the ghost is Jenny, it breaks my heart when Willow tells him that Jenny could never be that mean.
And obviously Surprise/Innocence and Becoming are incredible.

Becoming - Probably the greatest episode there is. It's just a wonderful exploration of the journey of life, and absolutely, brilliantly cruelly heartbreaking. It's everything I love about this show rolled into an hour and a half.
Passion - A truly shocking episode with an excellent exploration of Angelus' character. The scene where Giles finds Jenny's body is one of the greatest in the entire show.
Innocence - Another amazing episode. David Boreanaz almost steals the show, but SMG matches him and it's absolutely wonderful to see them fight. It's absolutely heartwrenching, and those last scenes with Giles and Joyce are wonderful. And of course - "What's that do?"

Bad Eggs - Utter empty filler. It's dull and adds nothing to the world.

Passion - A truly shocking episode with an excellent exploration of Angelus' character. The scene where Giles finds Jenny's body is one of the greatest in the entire show.

That's what I love about it! It's one of those easy episodes you can put on when you're in the mood for Buffy, but don't have time to be sucked into a whole arc.
