I like a lotta different styles. I have a list of about 100 favourites on my facebook.
I have a top 4, though; My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds To Mars, Fall Out Boy and Bullet For My Valentine.

i love MCR too. (However, i think their first 2 albums are better than the 3rd)
I could list bands I love all day, but my all-time favorite is, without any hint of doubt, Yes. They are absolutely brilliant. Even though I love almost all of their albums (some of the later ones were absolutely horrid, but their better ones more than make up for them), Close to the Edge and Fragile have to be two of the best albums of all time...in fact, the only albums I've heard that I feel like I can even compare to them are Dark Side of the Moon, Abbey Road, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but, as much as I adore them, I don't like them nearly as much. Almost every song on those two CDs gives me chills every single time I listen to them, even though I've probably heard them 100+ times, and there's no denying that they feature some of the best bass, guitar, and (perhaps most of all) keyboard work you'll ever listen to.

Schillaci agrees: Never heard of them, does that make me dumb?

Nah, it seems like no one these days knows about them (which is a little weird, in my opinion, considering they're one of the quintessential progressive rock groups along with other bands such as Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, etc. that are still ridiculously well-known). At least Joss still remembers them...he took the name of his production company from "And You And I" (the full lyric is "there'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify," and I smile every time I hear it.)

The short answer is...

So, top three:

You ask somebody what their favourite band is and they start listing every band that has released a song that they've listened to.

How can anybody list something like S club 7 as their favourite band? Its like asking somebody what their favourite meal is, and being answered with 'chewing gum'.

I mean, no offense, but come on... That isn't music, surely? Thats about making some rich guys, in ugly gray suits, even richer.

My music taste certainly isn't flawless, sometimes you just want to listen to a couple of minutes of brainless garbage... But if that's something that you list as "your favourite band/artist".. then you've either not listened to a lot of music, or you've sustained considerable whacks from sledge hammers to the cocunut.(or maybe you need to sustain)

I would like to add, that I do not judge, I merely question.

I have a varied taste in music. David Bowie, Big Audio Dynamite, The Clash, ABBA, Blur, Devo, The Pixies to name a few but if I had to pick just the one band that I could call my favourite, it would be The Stranglers.

i disagree strongly with this--i, for one, listed s club 7 as one of my favourite bands because they meant a lot to me during a certain time in my life (when i was 11 or 12). just because they're a pop band doesn't mean they can't have good music for a certain age group and it doesn't mean it's "brainless garbage." of course, my taste has grown just as i have, but i still consider them important in my childhood, and therefore deserving of a spot. also, i don't think people list "every band that has released a song that they've listened to"--i think some people have a largely varied taste in music that covers a lot of genres, eras, etc. i mean, my post has bob dylan and s club 7 in the same list--i'm aware that it's almost laughable, but that's growth and variation. sorry to rant haha.

I agree! Ok, Bluebird claims to hate S Club 7 but i know she likes them really so I'm always argueing with her about it. You think you can help me convince her?

Thats great to know, but the reality is, the question asked is what is your favourite band/artist. Not, what was your favourite music gimmick when you were 12, naive, and easily brainwashed by marketing.

If you want to list S club 7 as your favourite band, great, I was just questioning the authenticity of some of the answers, as they seemed to border the absurd.

i can see how someone could think some of the answers border the absurd, but i guess they're not absurd to whomever listed them, and one should respect that. you claim that you don't "judge," you merely question, but it's fairly judgemental to say that if someone lists something like s club 7 as one of their favourite bands, then they either haven't listened to a lot of music or they either have been or need to be knocked on the head.

I'd partially agree with you if the topic was called "BEST Artist/Band," but alas, it's not. I know plenty of people who prefer recent pop rock artists over other, genuinely talented bands not because they think those pop rock bands are more talented, but because that's just their taste.
