Not surprised to see that Buffy vs Dracula had no votes. Those pink leather trousers she wore alone are enough to send it to the bottom of the pile IMO.
The pink leather jeans were AWESOME!! the best part of the episode... she looked like soft-serve strawberry ice cream in them thangs.

Buffy vs Dracula was the best to me simply because of the "huh?" moment with Dawn. I remember when it came on tv, I was like "What the heck? Did I miss something?"
Keep in mind, this was pre-internet times, at least for me. I think I had a desktop computer and dial up internet, but nothing was spoiled like it is today. I seriously didn't know what was going on.

If they hadn't thrown that new twist in there, I would definitely go with Bargaining 1 & 2 though.

YES! You nailed it!

I enjoyed Buffy vs Dracula. Spike claiming Dracula as his mortal enemy was funny.

So which is your favourite Buffy season opener? I will go out on a limb and say that When She Was Bad is one of the most perfect openers to any show ever. It bridges the gap between the seasons perfectly, has a very logical storyline, and adds to each character involved, plus there are a host of stand out scenes and witty lines. I also like it because there is actually very little supernatural elements at play, yet it still has that air of mystery to it. WTTH and Anne are both very solid openers, in face Anne gets better the more I see it. Would say that Lessons is the best of later season openers.

When She Was Bad
Anne
Welcome to the Hellmouth
Lessons
Buffy VS. Dracula
The Freshman
Bargaining Part 1

I totally agree you but I would swap the freshman and anne around 😉

See I like Anne, think it gets a bad deal. The Freshman is solid, but I don't like Sunday, and it is mostly a setup episode which is fine, but doesn't really grab me like some of the season openers. In fact, I would change the order and put Buffy VS. Dracula last now.

I think others are better (in many different ways) but I could help, I HAD to pick, everything else would feel like treason.

Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest

Because it changed my life. I never watched Buffy and I was thinking for a very long time: Buffy = it just has to be crap, no way that show could be worth something. Already that ridiculous name, come on!

But then I got hyped very seriously (that Fanboys, dont ask 😉 ) and I gave it a try (hey, nothing to lose).

And after watching "Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest" I knew, oh man, now I am the Fanboy. 😀

I m glad this thread came to the top .

I ve been a member about 6 months now and one thing has become painfully clear .😳

I am a Buffy season opener slut . I can't help myself , I ll wax lyrical about all of them ...apart from Dracula 😀 . 'When she was bad' must make my top ten list . 'The freshman' and 'Anne' must make my top 20 .

One of the things that has suprised me on here is that the Whedon openers aren't held in higher regard . Hush , Restless , Once more with feeling,The body etc all get plenty of critical props ...and rightfully so . Personally I think 'when she was bad' and 'The freshman' are every bit as extraordinary .

I recently watched When She Was Bad and was surprised that it was even better than I thought. The Freshman I think might be the worst of the 7 openers. I also recently saw Buffy vs. Dracula, and I enjoyed that quite a lot. I'd have to go back and rewatch the other season openers. I do think Anne is under rated.

Yeah the Freshman is a so-so season opener for me. It does a solid job of setting things up, but yeah just doesn't stand out as much as others, and like I said before Sunday is a weak villain. Think When She Was Bad is one of my favourite episodes of the show full stop.

The Freshman is my favourite opener. It opens up a whole new world for Buffy and the gang, and I like that - I hate shows where the kids stay at high school forever, even though they look 30 years old. We saw Buffy out of her comfort zone, also a good thing. I like Willow and Oz as queen and king of the campus. I also like the Xander/Buffy team up, and how much love Xander shows. I think this story mirrors the rest of the season, the gang all split up, then coming back together again in the end.

It's a hard choice between When She Was Bad and Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest. I think the opening episode of the show was perfectly handled, considering what you have to achieve in that time without getting bogged down in explanation. I liked Buffy's interruption of Giles' speech, she's heard it. It was subversive without being confusing or offputting.

When She Was Bad took the risk of making the main character severely unlikeable, in the opening of the season when there might be new viewers. I liked that tv requirements didn't hurt the show, we needed to see her acting out and dealing with the psychological impact of dying.

Spot on!
I'm actually not a big fan of any of the season opener. Perhaps with the exeption of the pilot.
Maybe it is because I binged watched the show and always went straight from a brilliant season ending to the new season without any waiting and anticipation.
So I feel that most of the season opener are a bit slow and not quite up there with the best episodes.
