Freaks and Geeks:
YouTube - Freaks and Geeks intro
(1999)

Have you even heard of it? Currently rewatching this show, and I´m really loving it. I recommend everybody who hasn´t watched it to do so. If for nothing else than to see how many of the actors you recognize. 😉 And is there anybody who don´t fall in love with Lindsay?

Thanks for the tip. I watched the YouTube stuff you linked to. Made me want to find the actual eps. Great stuff. Linda Cardelini should've won an emmy, a golden globe, and whatever else was available. How the Hell does great stuff like Freaks and Geeks get canceled, then garbage like That's 7Os gets treated like it matters, and goes on forever? It kind of reminds me of the way Wonderfalls didn't make it through half a season, but Joan of Arcadia was a hit. Wonderfalls was a treasure. Joan of Arcadia was drek.

Glad you liked it. So come on people, give it a chance then you have the time.

And the whole thing about which show gets cancelled and others that go on forever I´ll never understand. Quality never seem to matter, just ratings I guess. But in the long run I´m sure they would benefit on giving shows with great potential a chance to find its viewers.

hey - you seemed to watch all the same shows i did. <3 will smith!
The Twilight Zone, The X-Files, The Wire, Life on Mars, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Flight of the Conchords.

I imagine the networks would define quality as ratings...the more people who watch it, the better the show must be.

Not always.

Buzz also factors into a show's ratings, too. As well as how a show gets treated by its network.

A show can be the biggest piece of drek around....but if it gets good word of mouth,it'll get good ratings-but for all the wrong reasons.

*shrug* Maybe I just don't know a lot about tv but that doesn't really make sense to me. If a lot of people have heard of the show but no one watches it, it still gets good ratings?

Besides, I think we're just about saying the same thing. My point was that even if a show has cliche lines and bad acting, if a lot of people watch it, the networks would consider it quality. It doesn't matter what kind of substance the show actually has.

Let me give you a current example to make my point: Gossip Girl.

Basically,it's 90210 brought into the digital age. The buzz for the show and its actors is INCREDIBLE. The ratings? Eh...not so much. (Most of that can be explained by it being on the CW;if it were on one of the Big 4(ABC,CBS,Fox or NBC)it would pull in more eyeballs.)

For being on the CW, Gossip Girl has great ratings. I'm actually almost sure it's their #1 show (Randy Giles would probably know better...).

I guess I'm confused.

Ok, I'm completely dating myself here (that's a reference to my age...NOT having some weird, schizophrenic tryst...pay attention! 😛) with these old '60s and '70s shows (and some '50s). And while most young folks find these laughable by today's standards (today's "standards"? HAH!) I loved watching these when I was growing up, dagnabbit. And not ashamed to admit it. Not ashamed, I say! 😛

Wanna make something of it?

Right, I thought not.

Oldies....

Kojack, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Welcome Back Kotter, Starsky and Hutch, S.W.A.T., The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Star Trek (TOS), Space: 1999, U.F.O., The Brady Bunch, Good Times, Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days, Sanford and Son, The Odd Couple, The Honeymooners, All In The Family, The Dick Van Dyke Show, CHiPS, The Addams Family, Gilligan's Island, I Dream Of Jeannie, The Munsters, Batman, Superman (the George Reeves version), Bewitched, The Avengers, The Lone Ranger, The Time Tunnel, I Love Lucy.

As for current stuff, I find that with the glut of absurd "reality" shows saturating the networks like so many roaches, I have lost a lot of interest in watching TV these days. I mostly watch DVDs now. The only network shows I do watch with any regularity are "Supernatural" and "Smallville", with the occasional "LOST" episode thrown in when the mood strikes me.

I can't forgive you Starsky and Hutch but you redeem yourself with Space:1999, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched and MAYBE Gilligan's Island. Maybe.
I used to watch Teen Titans, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Thats So Raven and Gladiators(The old series.). Now I watch Charmed, Buffy, Angel, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Dr Who and Ben 10. Suite Life is on Disney Channel and Ben 10 is on Cartoon Network for those who don't know. Suite Life is basically about twin boys who live in a hotel and Ben 10 is about a 10 year old boy who finds a watch that allows him to turn into 10 different aliens for those who wanted to know what the hell they were.

Gossip Girl has so-so ratings for The CW, but the network considers it a success because of how many people download it, especially via iTunes, and stream it on their site.

I think Smallville is their #1 scripted show. Top Model is their #1 show overall. But The CW would not dream of canceling Gossip Girl simply for the buzz, which it desperately needs.

I don't think buzz is a good indicator of ratings at all...a lot of more successful shows that are generic probably attract more people because they're familiar and the television audience is always slow to be more open-minded towards shows that are different (with exceptions like Lost). Some of the lowest rated shows on TV have the biggest amount of buzz...all that means is that the people who ARE watching are the ones who like to talk about them on the internet and stuff, and who will buy magazines to read about them. Which is why TV Guide would rather do a cover story on Gossip Girl then say, Two and Half Men.

Just as a followup:

Ben 10 has spawned a sequel series called Ben 10: Alien Force. Same general format(kid's watch can transform him into 10 different aliens),except for these changes: it's now five years in the future...Max has disappeared...Gwen's now a bit more advanced in her magic(guess she took some tips from Willow...🙂 ),and a foe from the old series has returned-but he's now fighting for the good guys.

Some favorite old shows:

American Gothic, Roar, Alias, Felicity, Veronica Mars, Point Pleasant, Tru Calling, Freakylinks, Hex, life as we know it, Pasadena, Dawson's Creek, The OC, The Pitts, Dark Angel, John Doe, The X-Files, Millennium, Roswell, The 4400, Eerie Indiana, Dark Shadows, Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Veritas: The Quest, Miracles, Keen Eddie, Threshold, Night Stalker (2005 only...I dislike the original), Invasion, The Others, Miss/Guided, Stargate, Carnivale

Some favorite current shows:

Lost, Desperate Housewives, Lost, Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, Lost, Samantha Who?, Wife Swap, Criminal Minds, CSI, Survivor, Ghost Whisperer, Heroes, Chuck, The Office, My Name is Earl, Lost, Gossip Girl, Supernatural, American Idol (auditions only), Psych, Big Love, The Tudors, Weeds, The Closer, Greek, Lost.

And I'm excited that ABC is resurrecting The Mole. 🙂
