Fear of the big C (Cancer)

I will not be able to find anything out till June!! I went for the MRI yesterday and no one told me that the machine was like being in a coffin and I couldnt do it.... I am clausterphobic(sp?)!!!!! Now.. had they told me this ..I could have let them know and they could have sedated me for the procedure, but they didnt. I felt as though I were suffocating, so I bid a hasty retreat and called the doctor. She feels it will be better at this point to wait till June and redo the mammogram and if the lump has changed then I will be taken directly into surgery that day to have it removed. Not too sure on how to accept that remark... does she just not want to try it again.. feeling comfortable that it is nothing, or is she aggravated that I was unable to stay in the "coffin" for 40 minutes without freaking out. I have appointment with my OB/GYN on December 21st and I will be asking her to recheck and give me an answer that is comprehendable.
I just want to thank everyone for their support , care and prayers. It has meant a lot to me. Thank you soooooo much!!!!!!!!!! ((((((((Hugs)))))))))

Ah, I know exactly how you feel with that "coffin", I wouldn't have been able to be in that thing for 40 minutes either. But I feel so sorry for you having to wait 'til June! The waiting was long enough when it was just a couple of weeks. You'll have to try not to think about too much, I know that sounds impossible but it might be easier after a while, I hope... since there isn't much you can do really. I just hope it works out the best way possible for you.

I am so sorry to hear that you have to wait till June now!
I don't really know what it's like to be in that thing, plus I'm not exactly clausterphobic (sp?) but it really must of been horrible!
I hope that the time between now and June passes by somewhat quickly, as I'm sure you're nervous and anxious and stuff. But the best advice I can give you is to still try going about life normally, I know that your thoughts on that thing are always gonna be in your head but whenever something is really really worrying me I just try to keep my mind of it and enjoy life anyway. 🙂 Good luck! Stay strong 😀

Yea - the MRI scanner is claustrophobic - it's not a nice experience but there are many worse. I wasn't very keen and confined spaces don't normally bother me. I just bit the bullet, went in, closed my eyes and listened to the music the nice radiographer played - he even suggested that I could bring my own CD if I didn't like his taste. I'd say go back again and get it done if you can - with sedation if necessary. It's one of the best diagnostic tools modern medicine has and should show any problem up well (though, personally speaking, I did find looking at the inside of my spine a bit freaky🙂)

Yeah, the pics of insides would be wiggins-inducing. I've never had one, and I'll try to avoid it if possible.

SD: Sorry about the wait...and the claustrophobia. Keep your chin up, I'm sure all will be well!

Funny story about MRIs. Mrs D. orders them for patients all the time at work. She just loves it when she gets the teenaged girls who haven't told their parents about their piercings in "unseen places", and don't remove the jewelry...ok, it's a bit mean, but it is funny! (The MRI causes the metal to heat up...quickly).

Oh - ouch!

SD: I'm so sorry to hear that you have to wait longer. Doctors can be such a pain in the ass sometimes when they don't tell you everything. June is far too long to wait for something like that. I'm not claustrophobic myself but I can see why one of those things would scare ya. As kd said - keep your chin up and try to keep your mind off it.

*hugs*

Hon, I think people who AREN'T claustrophobic would have an issue with being in an MRI for 40 mins. Trust me. *shudder* it's too bad they didn't tell you this before..my initial thought was SEDATE ME!!! *Hugs*

Jeez! That's terrible...I'm sorry you won't know for awhile. I don't know how anyone can deal with an MRI...*shudders with Jenny*

Perhaps I'm braver than I thought 😉 - see above ^^. As I said there, it isn't a nice experience (as with most medical procedures) but it is worth going through because it can show so much to the medics.

So true. It's a fabulous diagnostic tool. If anyone out there is thinking of a good career, an MRI tech is pretty much guaranteed a job, and a good one can write their own ticket! Radiologist is good too, but you have to put in the time to be a doc first...and all the sleep deprivation...

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful words of encouragement!!! I will definitely talk to the doctor about rescheduling it with some sedation. Things have just really been crazy lately... I didnt want to make a separate thread, but my boss of the last 8 yrs passed away from a massive heart attack this past Saturday. Things at work have been really topsy turvy and it has definitely taken my mind off of my troubles. She was a really wonderful woman (not just a great boss, but my friend and part of my family). She has now put me in the drivers seat at work, with the possibility of taking over her position. It just goes to show that you never know when your time has come, make the best of each day and let those that you love know how much they mean to you!!! ((((BIG HUGS)))) for you all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about your friend, dear. And your advice is the best I've heard in a long while. Take good care!
Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that about your boss! But I'm glad to hear that in some ways things are getting a little bit easier 🙂 But I truely am sorry about your boss...it's hard losing someone so close. It gets better over time though.
Good luck with your doctor, and once again stay strong and keep well!

Thanks for your posts, SlayersDestiny, really. It sounds like such a cliché when I say this but it makes me think about life and.. trying to live life and so on (I have a tendensy to hide inside, not daring to live for real). I am really sorry about your boss... Really. And yeah, good luck with the doctor, hope it works out..
