When I posted in the thread concerning Surprise and Innocence I made a point about Innocence containing a great "female empowerment" moment, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought about feminism in Buffy in general and the more unsure I became.

The scene that got me started is the close to the end of Innocence. In this scene Buffy gets her revenge on Angel, who greatly devalued her as both a person and a woman, by kicking him in his naughty parts, his MAN defining parts. Way to go! Right? right? Well, that's what I thought at first, but the more I thought, the more it occurred to me that this suggested that the only way for Buffy to re-establish herself as a powerful force and a powerful WOMAN was to attack Angel as not merely a foe, but as a MAN, a MALE, the opposite sex. Does this not suggest that the only way for a woman to best a man is not simply as a person defeating an equally equipped foe, but has to be as a WOMAN, a FEMALE attacking a MALE, and by attacking the most noticeable physical difference between a man and a woman, that this is the only way to really win, to gain a true victory?

Of coarse one has to take into account the fact that this was a personal vendetta for Buffy, against the person who had so devalued and abused her, but so often Joss Whedon says that the show was designed to be a noticeable feminist icon.... Too many thoughts.

Anywho, this all then got me started on the fact that yes, Buffy is perceived as such a powerful feminist icon; She kicks serious butt and so often gets her own by overpowering and defeating quite often male opponents with an ironically phallic weapon, the weapon that symbolizes her power. Yay, again? Right? Maybe not. To me, this suggested that Buffy is only at her most efficient, her most powerful when using this symbolic weapon, this phallic instrument. And what does that say? Does this mean that really a woman has to have some phallic, "man imitating" tool to be powerful? Does it mean that I'm insane? Maybe. Probably. But think about it and let me know what you think.

I just watched the commentary for the episode and Joss referred to it as a feminist act but never explained why. In my opinion she did that out of her emotions, she really wanted to kill Angelus but looking at him she saw Angel and decided it was best to leave it be for now, but now without hurting him like he hurt her.

The idea of Buffy kicking Angelus in the goolies (as Joss referred to it as) shows a more real feminist. The clichéd idea is feminists are dungaree-wearing man-hating lesbians but they're not normally, they just want women to have more power. Buffys a feminists, what she did showed women can be strong but are not this robotic "I hate men" kinda feminist often seen in the media, she still has emotions and feelings. Feminists are people too.

I agree with what AshSan said, but I would like to add that it is impossible to be a feminist while ignoring that men exist. A real feminist will recognize the fact that men exist. That's about all I can think to add for now... lol.

I really doubt there's any underlying significance to the presence of Phallic shaped weapons in Buffy. The truth is the reason you see more phallic shaped weapons, than ovum shaped ones is there's more of the former in general.

Seriously how many throwing star scenes to want to see? Would Captain America be a feminist hero, because he throws his shield? Also one of the most cool weapons scenes from all of Buffy, has to be Buffy and her Bazooka, The most powerful image from that scene would probably be gazing at the O the shell comes out of. Would that be Feminist? or maleist? 😉

As far as the sacking scene goes, I don't know. If that was the way Buffy dealt with all her problems you might have a point, but it isn't. I think all that scene says is, "sometimes you just wanna kick em in the nuts".

Oh, everyone is right in what they're saying, that's why I opened it for discussion. It's just a thought that I had, and while there are many obvious points to refute it(Some of which have been made), I still wanted to know what others thought about it. I appreciate that you all gave it some thought and replied, and that you avoided the issue of my sanity 😉

And by the way, I thought that I should point out that I'm not some fanatic man hater, I'm more of a solid equalist.

I don't have a whole lot to add, but I wanted to mention that the book "Reading the Vampire Slayer, the unoffical critical companion to Buffy and Angel" has several essays about feminism in relation to Buffy in it that are very interesting. You may want to check them out.

Exactly, and yes feminist don't have to be man hating lesbians unless they want to be.
