Cats Are Actually Terrible at Controlling Some Rat Populations, Study Shows

You'd probably think that a city with a feral cat population and a feral rat population would end up with fewer rats due to the work of... the feral cats. But it turns out that, just like humans, cats may prefer the path of least resistance - and that includes opting for easier prey.

On a study of cats performed in New York city, researchers found that the feline hunters, despite their famed hunting prowess, only rarely hunted rats - which could put a pin in the idea of using cats to deal with a growing rat problem, as has been proposed for Chicago.

Didn't the colonisation of Australia prove this? They brought rats AND cats in the ships. The cats are thriving on what's left of our native wildlife, while the cities and feed lots are swamped in rats. Cats didn't even want to kill the rats while stuck on ships, why would they kill the rats on dry land when there are defenceless lizards and marsupials? They are lazy animals and go for the easy kill.

I duno who's paying for these stupid studies, they obviously have more money than talents of observation.

We have a number of organisations working here to slowly eradicate the disgusting animals, you might be interested in that @vellavu - Department of the Environment and Energy One state is employing dogs for $140,000 to track the cats down 😛 I prefer the local method of shooting and drowning them.

Cats will eradicate all rats, they just prefer to kill off the native wildlife first.
My cats likes spiders and insects. But then again I don't have rats at home so who knows if she would love them!

Dr Chris Brown just posted an instathing of his cat being too lazy to hunt a hunstman 😂

The legs on them spiders are not exactly enticing as food goes.
Cats are smart. Why bother hunting rats when people leave bowls of pet food outside?

My cat used to bring me trophies, usually a mangled bird or something. 😨

I think (most) dogs are more prone to attacking and killing rats based on prior conditioning than cats.

why do I get the feeling this thread should be in one of them threads about Black Thorn v's Sineya.
Regarding your piccy, if the rat was a dog and the cats face was altered to have a big toothy smile and an evil pair of eyebrows, yep much better.
