FFH: Having Fred and Illyria?

How would you have written it to keep both Fred and Illyria?

Nah.

Perhaps they could have NOT stated that Fred's body and soul were destroyed and something (okay, maybe not Toth's...y'know) but a different device that replicated Fred.

Perhaps...

Similar to how they have both Killer Frost and Caitlin in at least some seasons of The Flash. Both personalities still exist, but Illyria comes out as dominant when Fred wants to ruin someone's day.

EDIT: For example. "Take your best shot little girl."

Fred exists as a voice inside Illyria's head, essentially acting as her conscience and confidant.

These are all good ideas, but I'm not sure it would have worked to keep them as alter egos. The major evil of Illyria, to us viewers, is that she kills off the goodness of Fred. I feel like it would ruin a lot of the oomph of Illyria's character if that didn't happen.

Perhaps Fred's lingering presence could be something they revealed over time, as the audience was softening on Illyria anyway.

I believe the comics had the laws of magic change, and suddenly Fred's soul wasn't anihilated by Illyria's fire. She's now in hell, which is where she was trying to escape from in the first place, and technically, would have been better off staying Pylea. Moving on.

I remember reading an interview that Willow would figure out a way to extract Fred's soul out of the chaos of Illyria's inner madness. Smarter than a cave man.

I think I heard it was going to be a Jekyll and Hyde situation, or a Glory and Ben situation.

As for the lore, I think Illyria made it clear that Fred is still pretty much all there, just that she has no volition at this point. Like, Illyria deleted her .exe files, or something. Souls aren't supposed to be completely destroyed, so I suspect that we would find out that she was really super possessed, or something. like that.

I remember reading somewhere that if there'd been a S6 of the show, they were going to have Fred make appearances...through Illyria. Which would've been FANTASTIC because Amy Acker has the acting chops to portray that! We saw it in The Girl in Question, and I remember being EXTREMELY impressed, just blown away. The way her expression changed the minute the Burkles left was extraordinary. That is acting.
