Finally! Realistic Mannequins!

I look at it this way...the fashionistas and the anti-fashionistas are just two sides of the same coin...they're trying to make a statement with their clothes. The truly original people truly dont give a shyte about fashion, or anti-fashion...they wear what is comfortable and appropriate, and ignore the trends of the day.
Yeah that's what I think... But I think there are really few people who don't pay any attention to fashion (I mean it's there wether we like it or not, it's kinda hard to avoid)..

I think it is hard to avoid. And the fact that it stares us in the face from day to day makes us try to be "normal". Trouble is - no one can define normal so they keep on changing it and if you look the same and are part of the majority then you are normal and you are then "accepted" (if you like) into society. I try to be a happy inbetweenie - I know I've not got the perfect body (according to the media) but someone likes it so it's gotta look kinda good. I have my off days when I feel like a minger (translation = ugly bugger!) but everyone has that and that's why I agree that the media has an influence on you even if you don't like it. I try to be myself as much as possible but in order to be given the chance to be myself I have to make a good first impression - this is done by the way I look. It can't be helped - it's the way the world works.

That's the way my world works too, I am "myself", but still, I'm not that original and I do care about how I look, and my eyes and mind are influenced by media whether I like the ideals media gives us or not.

Very true and very well put.
I always notice that my reputation comment is wrong after I post it.. eh.. What I ment to is that I agree elmo, that I am like that too and that I agree that that is the way the world works (to most people). And I don't like everything media tells us, but I still wanna make a good first impression, and I do care what I look like. I don't need to look like Britney Spears or Jennifer Lopez but I like it when I am able to look in the mirror and not feel sick..

fine change your argument completely.

people are still original. the media try and cover this up so they have an easier job. feck it. if people can't be bothered to go further then the nearest fashon outlet just to choose which out of the five identicle shirts which colour defines them as a person. then come home and claim originallity is dead then thats just stupid.

the levellers said it best

"its there to find it. you have to mine but you don't live in fear of it"

I didn't change my argument. Sorry I used the wrong word, but I didn't change my opinion.

You're not listening to what I'm saying. I don't think you have to dress that way. What I said was that everyone is affected by it, you can't ignore it (you can but it still gets into your head). I used to hate fashion and all that, hated the ideals media showed us (and can't say I like it now either), and I really disliked people who dressed like that, I needed to dress in another way, just because. What I'm saying is that most of the people who think they are original, just care that they don't look like people on TV, they don't notice that a lot of other people look like they do, and the reason they dress like this is cause of media, cause they don't wanna look like a supermodel or whatever you see on TV and in magazines, so they are affected by it, but that doesn't mean they dress like media tells us to.

See there are people who copy every trend that hits the stores, but most people just take ideas from what they see and relate it to their own tastes that were already established based on their body types, colorings, etc.

Basically what I"m saying is that we're not all sheep.

So true, I'm not a sheep - I just like to look good so I can feel good.

Heck ya...I swear sometimes all I think is 'must-be-skinny!!!! Get skinny!!!' and you know..I can't be overweight, I wear a size 0 skirt and a 1/2 in pants, tops and coats and such are Xtra Small...but I look at myself and I just don't see it. It's completely illogical I know. But it must come from somewhere.

kudos!!! to good coment!

i read something about this in the NY times on saturday... it's so COOL! thanx for making a thread about it cordelia!!! 🙂 Finaly, cause not all woman are a size 2 or a 4 or a smal/extra smal.. not that there is anything wrong with it, you are the size you are! and finaly the strores are caching on! i'm jumping on the HURRAY wagon here!! :matrix4: <--- me very happy LOL

to join the on going discution.... if i'm able too.. cordelia is right we're not all sheep! there is originalety in buying a hot fashion skirt, and it lies in what you do with the skirt... like mixing it with the rest of your clothing.. and making a you... in clothes version... though it's not very orig. to buy EVERY piece of trendy clothing you find (that is ALWAYS being 80-100% trendy...like a slave to being "IN") god i hate the word in and all it stands for... and i hate people telling me who to be and want to wear.. still i prob get aftected, the medias pull... or is it good fashions pretty pull 😉

Faldor: it is tru the media does try and affect what we think is good and what is bad... i don't like that either, what i think is hot and what they want me to think is not ness the same!

But yeah, people are different, and we should all have acceptance for WHO we are.. if i'm a + size brunnet or a size 2 blonde...

my biggest prob with looks is what i find pretty.. and what my mirror shows me isn't always what i want it to be... and i don't really know if that's to blame on the media or myself? i would like to think the last.. but...

i'm sorry this post is a bit messy.... trying to say it all in my sleepy hour....
