Spoiler! Finished Variant Cover for Issue #40 Released

I've said it before and I'll say it again - death does not always mean death in the Buffyverse.

Maybe Giles is dead. Maybe he isn't. Maybe this is a tribute to his character. Maybe this has something to do with something Giles is going to do posthumously. His is at the very back looking all stern.

I'm more concerned with why Angel's there, and in such a prominent position - i.e before Xander and Willow. After what he did, surely Buffy wouldn't want him anywhere near her?

With no more magic in the Buffyverse, I don't see how Giles could have been resurrected, so apparently rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated.

As for why Angel has such a prominent place on the cover, nothing could be simpler. None of the others trusts him behind their backs. (As predicted, Buffy has already completely forgiven him for everything.

The biggest thing that I want out of #40 is an interview with Joss. Well, not personally (although yeah, that'd be super cool LOL!), but a major interview, like the ones Allie or Jeanty have been doing with Buffyfest or the-forum-that-shall-remain-unnamed, or Whedonesque, or something. I really, really want to hear from him what all these shenanigans surrounding Angel are really about.

*Why can't we have an interview like that here on BB?

That'd be cool.
I don't see why the cover must be taken literally. There are a few aspects of the cover that don't line up with canon:

1. Giles is, well, dead. And he can't be resurrected even if there was magic, since he died a natural death and all.
2. Angel's in the sunlight. The Twilight powers have left him.
3. The "Welcome to Sunnydale" sign is still standing.
4. Dawn and Buffy are going to be in San Fran, aren't they?

The cover is just a representation of some of the things that the story is involved in. The gang probably isn't going to stand dramatically on the cliff surrounding Sunnydale, just like Buffy never sat in a classroom with a dead Xander and Willow at her feet.

Good points.

I really don't know why everyone's wondering where Spike is for this cover?

He's obviously clearing space in his quarters for all of Buffy's stuff.

Call me slow, but I just noticed the bit about Wolverine's prostate exam, and the mental image that it brought is absolutely NOT for the weak.

YES. I REALLY want to hear his reasoning for all of Season Eight, especially the Twilight thing!! I'm tired of hearing Scott Allie speak for him. And Jeanty's a sweetheart, but I want to hear Joss's opinion on stuff! So often in the interviews/Q&A's, Jeanty's reply to a question is to ask Joss. I understand why he would do that because for some questions he really can't comment appropriately anyway, but it's all the more reason we need a real interview with Joss!

Kean agrees: You shall have to go through me to get to my undead country man! Bring it! 😛
You're just trying to make up for agreeing with me 100% on Willow in Bargaining, right? 😛

In one word? Yes! 😀

Although, that is not to say I wouldn't put myself between you, your blood lust and Angel. 😉
