I'm already done 🙁 I can't believe the show was canceled! It was really good... now I just gotta watch the movie.
I have to say though, I'm VERY glad I watched it 🙂 It's 100% better than I thought it would be. Just goes to show, I need to start listening to you BBers more often! lol You've convinced me to watch Angel, read the comics, & watch Firefly all of which I didn't think I would like and now love to death 😉

No, it was like losing Anya and Amanda in the final battle of Buffy, you had to lose someone in order to make it all count, it would feel cheap otherwise
Jumping in on the discussion here, I'll start with Serenity the pilot. I actually really liked it, I didn't have any problems with the pacing. I prefer it to The Train Job as a pilot- how in the world would you know what's going on without seeing the pilot and seeing Serenity take on these new passengers? Besides, you get the background for the Simon/River story. You just can't beat that image of Mal opening that box and seeing a naked girl in it!
I, too, love the language, and I especially love the use of Chinese (is it Mandarin or Cantonese?). I have no idea what they're saying, lol, but it's so unique. I'm always left wondering, though, why there are not more Asian characters/actors.
The characters captured me right away. I love Wash. Kaylee kind of annoys me. I'm a Mal/Inara shipper from the beginning. I'm not so sure what I think of River. And I love Jayne.
The Reavers terrified the bejesus out of me from the very beginning, especially because of Jayne's reaction.
One thing that bugs me is that I'm reading summaries with trivia and such on different websites, and TV.com's Firefly page says that Joss originally wanted David Boreanaz for the part of Mal. I haven't read that anywhere else, and he was doing the lead on Angel at the time, so why would he even want to do that? I think that statement is patently untrue.

The Train Job- TV.com says
Joss planned to have Mal keep the cargo from the train to show that Mal puts the needs of his crew above the needs of others. However, executives at Fox told Joss to have Mal return the cargo to the town folk in order to make Mal more likeable to the audience
I'm not sure if I trust what TV.com says, especially after that comment about David Boreanaz. But anyway, this is a fast-paced, likeable episode, not one of my favorites. But I do like Wash coming up in Serenity upon the group outside of the bar.
Some good quotes:
Jayne: Do you know what the chain of command is? It's a chain I go get and beat you with 'till you understand who's in ruttin' command hereBut I love Jayne's line at the end: "I was aimin' for his head".
Mal: Kaylee, what the hell's goin' on in the engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?
and of course Jayne's : "I was aimin' for his head".
Doesn't NF use that line on an episode of Castle?

Bushwacked- this is one of my favorite episodes. From the "basketball" scene, to the interrogations, to the Reavers. I'm like Jayne, scared shitless by the Reavers lol.

Shindig- I really like this ep. I wouldn't say that it's the best one of the series, but it's entertaining, the dialogue is really funny, and I like the Mal/Inara scenes.

Safe- a really good episode. I'm not so excited about the parts with the cows lol, but I like the Tam flashbacks. So, that was Zac Effron playing a young Simon Tam? I didn't notice as I was watching. Love River's dancing, Summer Glau really showing off her dance background.

I like the ending, with Mal calling Simon a part of his crew.
However to me that contrasts with his attitude in the Serenity movie, and that's confusing to me.
Something else confusing is that Book gets special treatment from the Alliance here, but it's later revealed in the comic Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale
that he was a Browncoat spy who infiltrated the Alliance military.

lol, I feel inclined to agree. Especially if it was on account of a fear of chickens... I mean if they had really wanted DB they could have just gotten rid of the chickens 😉 and you'd have to be pretty darn scared of 'em to turn down a job on account of it...
Plus he feels all wrong for the part of Mal and dual lead roles feels like it would have been a bit of a strain...
And of course we get our famous line:
Mal: It looks like we arrived just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir.
Mal: Ain't we just.
Notice all the "-fying" in the 'verse?: corpsifying, creepifying.
One thing that I really appreciate in the Firefly universe is the inclusion of religion. It's interesting that in the supposedly more religious show regarding vampires, there's lots of religious icons used (crosses, holy water, etc), but there is more actual religion or spirituality talked about in Firefly. Don't know if that's because of the implied age differences between the casts (do we tend to think more of these things as we get older as compared to our adolesence?). But I certainly think the decision to include a Shepherd/Minister/Pastor/Monk character is a big part of it (and Inara has a religious bent as well, which is fascinating). It's always interesting to me to think what religion would look like in the "future", how it will evolve. In some sci-fi universes, religion ceases to exist as man evolves. I also think seeing the contrast between Book's more learned religion & spirituality & the more superstitious religion of the villagers is interesting. So, I also read that Ron Glass is actually a Buddhist in real life, making his playing this character even more compelling to me.

Jaynestown- I defy you to watch this episode and not laugh hysterically! This is the funniest episode of the series. I especially like the River/Book interactions. River's reaction to Book's hair (& I thought I would die laughing when I saw that!) was so great:
River: They say the snow on the roof is too heavy. They say the ceiling will cave in. His brains are in terrible danger.
Book: River? Please, why don't you come on out?
River: No! Can't. Too much hair.
Book: Is... is that it?
Zoà«: Hell, yes, preacher. If I didn't have stuff to get done, I'd be in there with her.
Zoe: River, honey, he's putting the hair away now.
River: Doesn't matter. It'll still be there. Waiting.
River: Just keep walkin', preacher-man.

Out of Gas- my favorite episode. If they knew they were being cancelled, this would've been a fabulous finale, especially if Mal had died. I adore how in this series, Serenity seems like an actual character, another member of the crew, with human characteristics. I love how she symbolizes freedom to Mal.
Just read this on Wikipedia, and it made me cry:
According to the DVD commentary, Alan Tudyk took the big red "recall" button from the Firefly set and presented it to Joss Whedon, telling him that if Whedon managed to get the series renewed, he could press it to call the cast back.
Wash & Mal's argument is so funny:
Wash: Yes Mal, it would boost the signal, but even if some passerby did happen to receive all it would do is muck up their navigation.
Mal: Could be that's true.
Wash: Damn right, it's true. They'd be force to stop and dig out our signal before they could even go anyplace. (pause) Well, maybe I should do that, then!
Mal: Maybe you should!
Wash: Okay!
Mal: Good!
Wash: Fine!

Ariel- very good, suspenseful episode. I'm watching season 1 of Fringe right now, and the whole deal with the hands of blue guys & the experimentation on River sounds like it could be a storyline on there! I kind of wondered in this if Mal would've been better off killing Jayne or kicking him off (kind of like Buffy with Angel/Angelus or Spike): would've saved a lot of trouble in the long run. He can't quite be trusted.
Yes. They have used a few Firefly references. The most obvious one of course his Halloween costume and the conversation that followed. Sometimes they're more subtle.
I know, I know, unpopular opinion. And it's not that I don't like her, it's just that my initial impression was one of "too sweet to be true" kind of thing.
