After a party to celebrate a successful job, Mal wakes up to discover he is now married and that his wife has stowed away on board.

The dialogue is so good in this show. I just love it. And Mal is such a great character. And Jayne & Vera lol, and the Special Hell lol

We get to see Inara’s jealousy in this one which is great.

I don’t really like Saffron as a character, but I like this episode a lot.

It does show that there's cultural drift among the planets, as none except Book have heard of this ritual, and even he reads to verify he remembers it right.

OTOH, it also shows that sometimes world building isn't thought out all the way. This isn't a new world that's never had contact with humanity. It isn't even a lost colony that has been found after hundreds of years of isolation. You'd think that they'd have language in their rules that everyone must be aware that they are getting married, since otherwise people are establishing legal marriages with only one person aware of what's happening.

I mean, imagine if it had happened to other crew members as well? Book, Wash, and Zoe are the only three who you can say are likely not to be dancing with others, but every other crew member is fair game. You could probably develop an entire episode around a different plot where 5-6 of the crew are suddenly married and not allowed to leave without their spouse.

Although as the marriage was a sham that was simply intended to get Saffron on board, it may have been something she'd set up, digging up an obscure ritual and paying the locals to go along with it.

Oh, I'm certain that's what she did. But it's concerning that what she did is apparently considered valid. Remember, Book looks it up, and he doesn't say anything about it being outdated, etc.

It could be in places where the ritual was genuinely done, or in times when it was more common, then everyone did have more context for it and know about it. Saffron would more than likely have chosen something that most in the present day wouldn't know anything about.

Jayne off his face lol, so true of people in cultures they are not familiar with. I remember reading a story in the news about some ladies who fell for being penetrated by a dildo made of sticks around a campfire, because some elder told them it helped with fertility. Later they realised it was a scam, but that was a long while after the assault. They do specifically say this is the marriage ceremony of these specific settlers, there would be hundreds of settlements, no one could know them all. Saffron obviously knows a few, considering how many times she has been married!
