There's still hope, Browncoats!

The cast of "Firefly" revealed this weekend that there has been talk of an animated version of the short-lived sci-fi cult classic that went off the air 10 years ago.

The cast reunited this weekend at New York's Comic Con to preview their Science Channel 10th anniversary special "Browncoats Unite," which airs Nov. 11.

On the panel, "Firefly" star Nathan Fillion told a room packed with fans, "If we're dreaming, tell me what you think about this: "˜Firefly' the animated series."

After the panel, his "Firefly" co-star Sean Maher told The Post, "I know somebody who is actually trying to get that done, who has approached Joss [Whedon, the creator] about it. He used to work with Guillermo del Toro."

Del Toro produced the critically acclaimed movie "Pan's Labyrinth," which combined live action with animatronics and CGI effects, as well as cartoon films "Puss in Boots" and "Kung Fu Panda."

"Firefly" only ran for one season on Fox in 2002, but fan reaction was so great after the cancelation that a movie continuation called "Serenity" was made in 2005.

"I think there's less face to be lost in an animated series," Fillion says. "I think if there was going to be a second movie, it would have happened by now. That was eight years ago."

Just thought I would share. What do you guys think about this? I always wondered about them rebooting the show or making a Serenity sequel, but a cartoon? Never crossed my mind.

As long as the story quality remains good and the animation is decent, why not? I just wouldn't want to see it developed as a Saturday morning kiddie show, and it goes without saying that as many of the original cast as possible furnish their characters' voices. The Syfy network would almost certainly take it, or it could go direct to DVD

That's not fair if they make this and it airs but the BTVS Animated Series doesn't. How selfish imo

Well, I'd rather have a Serenity sequel, but an animated series sounds really cool and I'd definitely watch it.
However, I kind of think, if they're doing an animated series, why don't they go just a little step further and make a life-action film or a second season. Or both. Like a Firefly Phase 2.

But...Firefly the animated series already exists.

How is it selfish?? BtVS got 7 seasons to tell a story to its fans; Firefly only got 1 season and a movie. There is so much more to tell with the Firefly 'verse... Believe me, I love BtVS more than just about every show ever, but I am not gonna be pissed if the Buffy cartoon never airs.

Less than a full season! As American seasons go anyway. Plus Angel is part of the Buffyverse & both have extensive comics continuing the storylines.

Ah OK that Outlaw Star is an anime, I had never heard of it. Are you implying that Joss stole the idea? 😉

To me it's a matter of quality. More Firefly is most likely good. But it has to be done well. What I prefer to happen doesn't matter. If this happens (I know, I know) I'll give it a chance. Like with the Buffy and Angel comics and take it from there.

Ideas maybe. There's quite a few similarities if I remember correctly. Can't find the page/post right now. Not that I'm searching like crazy... Everyone steals from everyone else. You just have to do it good/smart. 😉

At this point Joss Whedon has such a strong history of producing entertainment I love that I'd give anything she's a part of a shot. The fact that it's more Firefly only makes it more appealing.

I'm actually a little surprised that they haven't tried to get this off the ground before now. Firefly had a bit more of an adult feel that I guess a some people might have felt wouldn't translate well into a cartoon format. I have confidence that if they do develop it, Joss will be able to make it work.

The same goes for a Buffy cartoon. I know there was real potential there of it happening for a while, but for whatever reason it fell apart. That's such a shame. Firefly, Buffy, Angel, I'd want all of them to continue on in cartoons if more live-action projects are off the table.

I totally agree... It has to be good. Just because it's a "Firefly"-related project doesn't mean I'll like it!

It sounds interesting, and Fireflys concept would work well in a cartoon.

I like cartoons, there have been some really good ones that manage the Kid/Adult line very well and easily appeal to both!

Plus actors giving their voices to cartoon isn't super hard or time consuming, and since the cast seem to genuinely love the show, so I'd say that'd all lend their voices.

I'd be happy and trusting that it'll be great as long as Joss would be a part of it, and the actors would do their characters' voices. But would Joss even be willing to do it since he's now making S.H.I.E.L.D?

Not a fan of cartoons but I wouldn't miss this for the world if it happened. Anything Firefly i good in my books.

I agree with this. While I like the Angel & Buffy comics (&Dollhouse ones a bit less so), the Firefly comics haven't really grabbed me. I wonder why no one has thought about continuing any of these in novel form rather than comics or animated? I haven't read Jane Espensen's story in that one recent book, I've heard it was really good. I think there are enough good writers associated with the 'verse to write some short stories. I know that Joss is a comic geek (it's ok, so am I), but I wonder if a Buffy extended universe in that form would have been more popular.
