Hi, I'm the editor of the undergraduate academic journal devoted to the Whedonverses, Watcher Junior. We're doing a survey on what viewers think the values expressed by Firefly are. It's 44 multiple choice questions, but you can add comments if you like.

We're trying to do all of Whedon's works this summer to see if there's a common thread of shared values. We've done similar surveys for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Avengers, and Cabin in the Woods, with a survey on Angel that's ongoing. The results have been fascinating and I'm really excited to see what fans have to say about Firefly and next week with Serenity.

We publish a summary of the results within two weeks, so you'll get to see the results quickly. We're also presenting the results at Slayage 5, the academic conference on the Whedonverses held by the Whedon Studies Association. Please do let me know if you have any questions!

Basically, that policy has varied by the fan community. Some have an application process where I tell moderators up front about this project and the fact that I'm looking for undergraduate papers on the Whedonverses. Some don't seem to mind. Some boards were thrilled and had people ask me about publishing their own work. Here, a few people commented on the Angel thread.

For this board, there's a ban on linking for your first couple of posts, but it's also not listed under spam in the FAQ. If there's a standard procedure, I'd be delighted to follow it. Let me know...
 
It's common courtesy - I don't appreciate the tone you're taking here, as if I did something wrong in suggesting that you ASK before using our community in this way. I could have just deleted both your posts, but I didn't.

Whether there's a stated policy or not, contacting the site first is what you should do before you use a site for a purpose such as this.

For us, please let members know what sort of personally identifiable information you will be collecting and using from them.
 
I'm sorry: I'm not trying to be snarky. I was just trying to explain my thinking. No offense was intended.

As for the info collected, that's in the post on Watcher Junior that links to the survey. Here's what we tell people: "KwikSurveys doesn't use or sell to a 3rd party any data collected. And since the survey asks no identifying questions about your demographics, I have no idea who you are or what your contact information is." I'm interested in the "Bring Your Own Subtext" principle, not demographics.
