And yet his being "pretty damn normal" had absolutely nothing to do with them breaking up. So how does that prove she can't have a relationship with someone normal?

It doesn't It's just MY opinion after watching the show thats all, and holds about as much weight as yours. But as I said I'm not all that keen on the obvious hostility shown on this thread right now so I'll leave you to bitch in piece. 🙂

Fine...pretend I'm bitching at you  you are the one who started talking down to people and are now clearly having problems when people call you on it.

Arguing against a silly response is not hostile, what your not keen on is being disagreed with, you can't accept that what your saying is rooted in fallibility, and ultimately has no substance: as per your last point, it's NOT AN OPINION: IT IS A FACT THAT RILEY IS NOT A NORMAL PERSON, HE'S JUST MORE NORMAL THAN ANGEL/SPIKE.

You can keep repeating that it's your opinion, but that is just pure silliness, I think the sky is yellow, but there's evidence it's blue, but it doesn't matter 'cos I think it's yellow, regardless of the facts, is the logic of your argument. Your either a very very very abstract philosopher or someone who isn't used to having their opinions disagreed with, or opposed, and as such is not used to making arguments to support their points.

classical Aristotelian behavior. Deny the evidence of the facts just because the sacred scriptures say otherwise. Eppur si muove (And yet it moves)

Just becasue a number of people tell you your incorrect doesn't mean it's hostile, if anything it should help you to see you need to re-evaluate your logic when a majority of people can prove to you how your wrong.

Since you haven't backed up your logic, and you've picked and chosen which points to reply to, ignoring most, while telling us that facts aren't real, calling us hostile doesn't make us look hostile and you look the good guy, it just makes it look like you can't back up your argument.

No but some of the language aimed my way on here is. So toodle pip sweeties.

And saying things like " toodle pip sweeties/hun " is condescending, no one else has mentioned it throughout the thread as we all have valid points to make in the actual debate, we dont have to pretend to be a victim and back out when our "logic" fails.

right?! that sweetie and hon stuff is such BS.
No but some of the language aimed my way on here is. So toodle pip sweeties.

Perhaps, and if I am guilty of this hostile language, then I genuinely apologise, it was not my intention: but I still think my point is valid, in the context of this discussion, and in the realm of debate/argument/discussion in general. Anyone can posit an opinion/interpretation but if you can't back it up with valid points, rather than fanficesque assertions, then you can't blame people for pointing out the flaws in your interpretation, especially when it comes to something that is obviously so important to the majority of people who love Buffy like we, you included, do.

My last word on this.

Just becasue a number of people tell you your incorrect doesn't mean it's hostile, if anything it should help you to see you need to re-evaluate your logic when a majority of people can prove to you how your wrong.

No but comments like this are.

@Silverspike
Logic? Facts? Actual bloody script? Sod it all, my feelings are more important! Yeah, this is you, OK? This sort of behavior is exactly the reason why ( Spike/Buffy ) shippers are loathed and despised.

If you cannot support your interpretation with facts in a way that makes sense then it's just worthless pseudo-intellectual masturbation that belongs in the realm of fan fiction.

You see I don't get why you all seem to be so intolerant of other peoples opinions and why you all seem (on the surface anyway) to be so damn angry/hostile, But hey thats your problem and my final word on the subject as I'm sure no meaningful dialogue will can come from this thread. 🙂

*ETA* And newsflash, people don't have to think all the same. Amongst most civilized folks other peoples opinions are tolerated even though some may not agree with them. Shouting folks down and saying their way is the right way and only they hold the true 'facts' is just silly. Sorry.

But your not saying why anyone is wrong, that's where the 'hostility' is likely coming from, you can't continually disagree with people just because you disagree and not expect people to escalate their arguments, surely you must recognise this, argue back, with an argument and not pseudo-specific comments if you don't agree

I counted hostile language from one, count one lone poster (who makes a habit of this it has to be said), so the Spuffy shipper picks up his ball and goes home. 🙄

Your skin has to be just a little thick because some of the comments here can be a little heated, but that's it.

Cherry-picking your arguments and whining about 'but it's my opinion' isn't going to garner you any support, sorry.

And Riley isn't normal, he just presents himself as gee-shucks Iowa-farmboy normal but he's actually a secret-agent-military-black-ops monster hunter. 😉
Xander is normal, Robin Wood is more normal than Riley, Gunn is more normal than Riley Andrew is normal (I'm never sure how much 'special ability' it took to summon all those demons with panpipes. 🙄), these are normal people who drift intot he bizarre world of monster-hunting and survive just fine.

I agree - but I am also wondering if I'm the hostile one now :/
You see I don't get why you all seem to be so intolerant of other peoples opinions

Because your opinion wasn't an opinion about something in the show, your opinion was there's no such thing as facts in storytelling.

That's not like us discussing a theory about slayers activation age, where we might both be right or partially wrong or completely wrong, and we have to agree to disagree.
It's like me trying to convince you the sun is green, thats not opinion, its just wrong.

On this board maybe.

This board is very tolerant towards, well, everybody pretty much but there are prominent sites out there that outright ban for shipping. I really like it here. It's the last place where one can have an actual, interesting discussion about BtVS. Forums suck, dumblr is idiocy in distilled form, live journal is on life support - this fandom is just so dead. So dead.

Oh you know how to wound a gal don't you. And on that wonderful comment I'll take my leave of you and let you get your hate on in piece.

I don't care who you are, I certainly don't care about you enough to even try to wound you. I disagree with your opinion because I find it ridiculous, that's it. Relax.

You see I don't get why you all seem to be so intolerant of other peoples opinions and why you all seem (on the surface anyway) to be so damn angry/hostile

You know, I could like write a book about why I'm hostile towards shippers' nonsense.

But hey thats your problem and my final word on the subject as I'm sure no meaningful dialogue will can come from this thread.

Well then, I'd recommend you to stop posting and retreat to the safety of your online echo chamber of choice.

What are we all meaning here when we say "normal?" A human? A civilian who isn't aware of the supernatural? Something else? I don't see how any of us can say definitively that Buffy can't make a type of relationship work if we haven't even defined what they type of relationship is. Even then, I don't think we can make that call. We may, as individual fans, believe it, but it won't make it a fact or canon. What makes a relationship successful anyway? Marriage? But that has a 50% chance of ending in divorce.

All we know is that Buffy has a number of long term relationships that ended roughly. That's it. Does the fact that all those relationships have been with men who are part of "her world" lend to a theory that she can't make a relationship work with "unusual" men?

Whatever theory you draw from the facts are just that, theories. Buffy's dating past doesn't really suggest anything about what type of relationships she can have. What they do suggest, is that slaying, being the slayer and making choices that compromise the life you have with someone, has effected her romantic relationships. But even still, it isn't definitive.

OK, we take Xander but even then he has lived and extraordinary life and has had the most unusual experiences to other men his age who know nothing about what goes bump in the night.

If I was to meet Xander and start going out with him, and he told me/show me his life, I'd think he was the least normal person I had ever met.

I suppose, that is another variable to add in: are we talking normal from our perspectives or from Buffy's?

I'd take Xander as the benchmark 'normal guy' that Buffy could date, knows about her world, but without any 'special abilities.'

Alright Folks...this is the season 10 look ahead thread and lets stay on topic.

Everyone needs to be respectful and address one another without being rude and/or condescending.

🙂

I suppose its Buffy's perspective that matters in this situation right? I wouldn't judge Xander as normal, either. I think he's a pretty extaordinary guy, but in comparison...Buffy would see him as a normal guy.
I mean he started off in S1 as a normal nerdy every man type, and grew into someone else over the years, who says that a normal boyfriend of Buffy's couldn't do the same?

Plus, Xin Rong- didn't mean you as the 'nasty' poster, your arguments were fine, impassioned but polite, like always.🙂

Curious, who is the person in the background, is it supposed to be Andrew, I have such a hard time recognising certain characters in the comics? Especially, if they were not in Buffy, which I know Andrew was, but the detective guy, I hardly ever recognise who he is, unless they state who he is, with the other preview I only knew it was him when he mention the anti vampire section of the SFPD

I think its meant to be Det. Dowling, wearing Angel-hair. 🙂

I'm comparing him to the two-page strip above and while the lighting effect isn't brilliant, I think its the same guy.

Thanks for that, if it was Andrew I was going to suggest that he'd maybe done something wrong, like built another Buffy bot or something.

I think it is Andrew, judging by proximity to Spike. 🙂 Lols , I am a closet Spandrew shipper, so of course I 'spot' them together whenever I can. But do you guys agree that the person on the right from ?Andrew is Willow? I think this is Rebekah's way of drawing Wil's face. My speculation is that whatever is happening inside is likely Xander/Dawn-related. Unless the face is Dawn, then I don't know...

When I looked at the picture I thought the four people in it were: Spike, Andrew, Buffy and Dawn.

My guess is Giles is doing some magic-y thin and generally freaking them all out by being a 50 odd - 60 year old in a 12 year old's body.

Looks's like Dawn to me too, I think its the hair colouring.
