Five Man Band:
The Leader - Field leader.
The Lancer - Second-in-command, usually a foil to contrast the leader. Can be an authority figure.
The Smart Guy - Group intelligence.
The Big Guy - The "muscle", the physically strongest member of the team who does not fulfill Leader or Lancer.
The Chick/The Heart - Not always female, essentially the person who saves the day with words or shows compassion to the other group members.

If you could pick your team of any five characters from the Buffyverse with them fitting into these roles, who would they be/why?

Established Examples in the Buffyverse:

Buffy:
The Leader: Buffy
The Lancer: Giles
The Smart Guy: Willow and later Dawn
The Big Guy: Buffy's boyfriends (Angel, Riley, and Spike)
The Heart: Xander
- Variations: Willow, Xander, and Faith could all act Lancer-y, while Spike filled the role in S7.

Angel:
The Leader: Angel
The Lancer: Wesley
The Smart Guy: Fred
The Big Guy: Gunn
The Heart: Cordy
- Variations: Wesley doubled as The Smart Guy whenever demon expertise was needed.
 
I can't improve on the examples given, so instead I went with a minor character, Suicide Squad type band.

The Leader: Luke
The Lancer: Sunday
The Smart Guy: Dalton
The Big Guy: Olaf
The Heart: April

Luke and Sunday because they were both one-shot villains but still a lot tougher than the average vampire. Both were leaders but one was a fanatic and the other quite irreverent, so I think that makes for a good contrast. These roles could switch depending on the mission.

Dalton was all scholarly, but in some ways I think he might funtion better as The Heart, since his humanity is what led to his death. Warren could be the smart guy instead. I didn't include him because he not a minor character.

Olaf probably isn't one to take orders, but if offered mead, wenches and babies, he could probably act as paid muscle.

I'm thinking April is reprogrammed so that instead of being infatuated with Warren, her loyalty is to the team. She's there for super strong robot purposes, but retains her sweet personality. She would be the lack-of-morals support.
 
Hmn, I'll give this a shot:

Girl-Power:
The Leader: Buffy (post S7)
The Lancer: Faith (post S7)
The Smart One: Fred
The Muscle: Willow (S5+ obviously- some of the biggest muscle on the planet when it comes to firepower. Plus she doubles as smart)
The Heart: Cordelia (w/visions. Probably like she was in 'You're Welcome')

Who wouldn't love that group? Also they would kick ass. 🙂

Also: The British Are Coming!

The Leader: Giles
The Lancer: Ethan Rayne
The Smart One: Wesley (dark n' stubbley)
The Muscle: Spike (souled)
The Heart: Lydia (the female watcher that interviewed Spike. She seemed nice.)

I have no idea why their working together. 😕

This is actually kinda fun. 🙂

The Leader - Angel. (would have been Buffy but he has more life experience. So my leader and lancer are interchangeable, which I think is a good thing as the leader may sometimes need a break.)
