If this has been discussed anywhere else I missed it, so...

What did the scene where Spike and Buffy's clasped hands burst into flames mean to you? It couldn't have been ordinary flame, because neither of them showed any pain whatsoever. In fact Buffy seemed astonished and almost joyful from the experience, while Spike seemed surprised and more than a little shocked. I've heard it tied back to the "I want the fire back" song from Season 6, but that just seems too easy an answer to me. There MUST have been something else going on there, a bonding of souls, a metaphysical connection...SOMETHING.

Help me out here, folks. What did it mean to you?

That spike was on fire, and both have the strenght to endure allot of pain...

Good try, but that was BEFORE Spike started to burn, and the look on Buffy's face was more pleasure than pain. I just can't help but think that there was more to it than just a smoldering handshake.
 
Maybe the fire came from loves burning passion [hellmouth style]

When flames don't hurt, petrol on the hand when first ignited doesn't burn the hand or cause any pain, as with all items that burn it is the fumes from the item that burn, not the item.

So you're saying that Buffy and Spike both had some sort of oil on their hands, possibly from some sort of activities the night before? Hmmm.....

Well, see, first you take this oil, scented it the best, and then you take two healthy willing bodies, preferably of the opposite sex, and then you rub the oil all over....Wait a minute, you were kidding, right?

Is that my opposite sex ?, your opposite sex or one of their opposite sex.
And no comments about how many different sexes there are, I had enough of a problem when my daughter tried explaining that I wasn't a virgin. [don't use Lavender oil as it makes one [or two] sleepy] not that I know what you meant !.
 
That would be two opposite sexes from the other...oppppp...Dang it, now I KNOW you're kiddin'. And as for your daughter knowing that you aren't a virgin, how does she know anything about sex at her age. You tell her that it's still a free country, and you can be a virgin if you dang well want to, (I swear, these kids today...Do you know that my very own granddaughter just the other day tried to tell me that the tooth fairy really wasn't, he just felt more comfortable dressed that way. Now, I ask you, really wasn't WHAT?)

And by the way, thanks for the tip about the lavender oil. My wife has been thinkin' it was because I was losing interest.

To me it was symbolic of their relationship, and very poetic. Flames can be beautiful, but are also dangerous, so they can't hold on too long.. but while it lasts it's amazing.

'ere white avenger you tell your granddaughter that the tooth fairy is a girl, 'ang on are you suggesting that your granddaughter thinks 'he' the tooth fairy was dressed as a girl for 'comfort'.
I'm allowed to say stuff like that about my daughter, mainly 'cos she's touring Europe before going to university next year.

Oh and about fire.
The properties of the fire that is above, are heat, making all things fruitful, and light, giving life to all things. The properties of the infernal fire are a parched heat, consuming all things, and darkness, making all things barren.

As symbolism goes, the fire that is between them is indicative of their relationship, whilst being a beacon of life it is also a warning of the possible pain that may come should they stay with each other.

Darlin' you might just have won a cigar there. (Or, if you don't smoke, how about a big box of chocolate covered cherries?)

As for the tooth fairy, I'm not sure whether it's male or female. I was just taking her word for it. I thought that's the way they taught things in public schools these days.

It's plain to me that you're gonna go far here (or would that be far...there?). Anyhow, Australia is a far ways off, ain't it? (I know, it's not far from you live, fut it's more than an all day trip from Rome, Georgia.)
 
When you say I'm gonna go far here, do you mean I can be good here ? Or do you mean you wish I'd go far [away]
 
I mean it's really great to have a nit picker here who's ALMOST as good a nit picker as I am (did I ever tell you that I learned to count from one to ten by counting the number of times John Wayne shot his six-shooter before he had to reload?) I've always believed that the nit pickers will one day rule the world.
 
to me the hands are a symbol of what spike said paisson fire heat that was all that went through my head while i was watching that scene (while crying i might add) it was basic to me that it was meant as a metaphor for passion or passionate love

the show has looked at passion in differen ways through the years and i still say it was all about heat, desire and wanting.

I have to agree with that. I have always said that Spike showed Buffy the first real gut wrenching, biting, clawing, toe curling, howling like a banshee passion she had ever experienced. That is why she will always want him. She will always love him, however, not JUST for the sex, but because he was always there for her, even when she told him not to be.
