I did have a friend who was basically using being "vegetarian" as an excuse to starve herself, so sometimes I worry.

Wow, please help her. It's best to intervene right away, I've had friends who died from anorexia who used this very same excuse. It's so serious. Looking at thinspo all day, and feeling guilty for eating more than 200 calories is so wrong. 🙁

That was many years ago and she has gotten help since then, but now whenever someone I know tells me they're a vegetarian I immediately think of that.
I'm a meat eater. I love most meats but not all. I definately couldnt kill my own food though and sometimes I feel bad when I'm eating lamb, but I just try not to think about it 🙂 I could never be a vegeterian though and its not because I couldnt give up meat, its that I dont like that much veg or fruit. I know that's really unhealthy and it'll come back to bite me in the ass but I'll worry about that then 🙂 I'm just a really plain eater and I'm really fussy with my food.

I would guess that eating the brain of another primate probably isn't a good idea because you don't know what could carry over and have long term effects.

I've been a vegetarian for three different phases of my life, and each time a girl was involved (although it was never at somebody else's insistence). I suppose in the end I didn't get enough out of it to justify denying myself. And speaking from my own experience, the problem with "the vegetarian option" is firstly that when you're going to a formal dinner or something like that, the chef tends to decide what it's going to be when he knows how many takers he has, and secondly that people also assume that all vegetarians eat everything that isn't meat. I have a pescatarian friend who doesn't like goat's cheese, but she's sick and tired of being offered it as a vegetarian alternative.

I have tried to be a vegetarian but somehow I can never be fully comitted. I only eat chicken and cow. I have a few friends who are vegetarians and vegans and I'm glad that more restaurants are having options for them.

Im not a big meat fan, I rarely eat it and if i eat out, i usually go for the veggie options. But when i go to the USA i will always crave meat. A good burger or hot dog. Oh my, corn dogs, wow i love those sweet meaty dogs!!! but as soon as i get back to England, its back to my veggie meals. 🙂

I eat fish and egg sometimes (not that often). But no meat or milk. I do feel bad when eating fish but it was the best comprimise I could do with myself to not develop my eating disorder again and have to many "don'ts" about food. 🙂

A big issue is meat sustainability! http://www.ajcn.org/content/78/3/660S.full

ABSTRACT
Worldwide, an estimated 2 billion people live primarily on a meat-based diet, while an estimated 4 billion live primarily on a plant-based diet. The US food production system uses about 50% of the total US land area, 80% of the fresh water, and 17% of the fossil energy used in the country. The heavy dependence on fossil energy suggests that the US food system, whether meat-based or plant-based, is not sustainable. The use of land and energy resources devoted to an average meat-based diet compared with a lactoovovegetarian (plant-based) diet is analyzed in this report. In both diets, the daily quantity of calories consumed are kept constant at about 3533 kcal per person. (my note: those are a lot calories!) The meat-based food system requires more energy, land, and water resources than the lactoovovegetarian diet. In this limited sense, the lactoovovegetarian diet is more sustainable than the average American meat-based diet.

uh-oh! good thing the Fischer Tropsch process was invented back in the 30s to produce synthetic fuels, otherwise the US might have a problem. The whole 'not sustainable' bull is simply a greenwash bedtime scare story. Yes, Food prices are going to increase as the petroleum free lunch continues to dry up, but that does not mean fuel prices will spiral ever upwards, presumedly, bringing food prices with it. As there are a whole host of technologies, for example the Fischer Tropsch process, with 50+ years of experience that will prevent such a scare story becoming reality.

Furthermore, I know they feed cattle corn a great deal in the USA but I'd imagine Cattle/beef requires less fossil fuel than plant based foods for a given Food calorie content. As you don't need to fuel a tractor to let a cow eat grass in a field and then cut them up into prime-rib.
On the other hand with crops you have to: plough the field, sow the seed, spray herbicides, harvest the grain, and dry the grain.

In saying that though I'm not a big meat eater. Nuts, eggs, seeds, milk, and at least a weekly occasional fish etc. make up for it.

I'm fecking addicted to Hazelnuts & Pecans!

Too bad most of the cows in the states aren't grass fed and require all the fossil fuel energy to make the corn they eat plus whatever to process and transport them into meat.
