Did anyone else think that Willow, Xander and Anya were acting weird during the patrol with Riley. Xander should have known about Riley hand movements when when he was a soldier, unless that's all been forgotten now. Also they have been on patrols before so should have at least have weapons on them.

I thought that scene was adorable! I LOVE Riley probably more than anyone else on this board lol I thought he was so freakin cute in this episode trying to get the gang to take the patrolling more seriously and more military-like.

Xander Anya and Willow were like what the hell is he doing......they were totally mocking him but in the aw he's so precious type way lmao. I think they knew what his hand signals meant but they just didn't care because when they are out w Buffy it's totally different lol Riley is so cute trying to be all strict 😀 love him

I heart Riley, too! :)
It's a pretty big departure from their patrols in episodes like 'Anne' and 'Dead Man's Party'. I think the Scoobies seeming out of place was done for comic relief.

As for Xander's soldier memories, he conveniently forgot them in season 4 as soon as the Initiative arc got underway. A pretty big (narrative) waste if you ask me. Though he seems to display a lot of military know how in the season 8 comics.

I agree; I thought it was funny but definitely not believable that they would act that way on patrol... They know it's serious business and to quote The Unspoken:

Xander is supposed to know what being a solider is about, due to being one while under a spell for a brief period of time? Really?

I believe that the Scoobies were acting in that manner to emphasize the point that Riley didn't really need them. It also emphasized that Buffy's demand that the Scoobies accompany him was a sign that she failed to realize that he was an accomplished demon hunter in his own right.

Honestly I think it was just written to be for laughs. I love the scene, it's cute and funny, but yeah I agree. It's uncharacteristic behavior from the Scoobs who five years in would certainly have known better.

Also this:
It also emphasized that Buffy's demand that the Scoobies accompany him was a sign that she failed to realize that he was an accomplished demon hunter in his own right.

It was kind of pivotal to the Riley character to be put into this situation where he felt this way/realised how Buffy viewed him since they were planning to make him leave.

I think the scoobies were not very bothered about patroling because they knew that riley could handle it, and they thought his hand signals were kinda funny. The writers just used them for comic relief I think. But i really like that scene, it was funny 🙂
