Was anyone really surprised as to who died? I saw it coming even before the announcement that one of the cast was going to die.

And for some reason the final (cliffhanger) scene had me halfway expecting to hear you-know-who say, "No, you don't, but thanks for saying it."

Anyway, no more new Castle episodes until the fall, and, just speaking for myself, I HATE CLIFFHANGERS!!!!!

Totally agree about the cliff hangers
I just finished watching it on hulu. That was very heart stopping. Can't wait for the new season.

Damn, that was almost a Joss season finale.

I had a bad feeling partway through the episode that one of the regulars would turn out to be involved with the bad guys... but my suspect was Ryan, not Montgomery.

So if Lockwood is still on the loose, Montgomery's family is still in danger. Obviously they have no more use as leverage over him, but Lockwood might still want to kill them to make a point. I wonder what Montgomery meant when he told Lockwood he had "arranged" to foil his plans? (I'm assuming that Lockwood is still alive... we didn't see any body to indicate he'd been killed, did we?)

I wonder who the Big Bad is, the one who hired Lockwood? I think it's Alexis... that girl is too sweet to be true.

Obviously, Kate isn't dead. It will probably turn out that she was wearing a bulletproof vest, or the bullet was deflected by her badge, or something.

I hope that the season premiere this fall finally puts the Case of Kate's Mother to rest once and for all. And it remains to be seen how it will affect the series now that her and Castle's feelings are pretty much out in the open.

I also wonder how they will deal with Montgomery's replacement as the new captain? A new guy who doesn't know Beckett and Castle would probably not be as tolerant of their rule-breaking ways.

Montgomery shot Lockwood right there at the end of the fight, didn't he? When he said "we're both over" or whatever? Also, I'm assuming his "arrangement" had something to do with all those files he stuffed in an envelope before he told his family goodbye.

Yep. Shot him point blank with a double barreled 45 Long Colt/410 shotgun derringer. Extremely nasty firearm. Not even a top quality Second Chance vest could have stopped that.
At first I thought he shot Lockwood... but we only heard one gunshot (unless they both went off at the exact same time), and Montgomery was the one dead when Castle and Beckett went in. If they showed Lockwood's body, I missed it.

I assume he was the one who shot Kate at the cemetery.

I thought he shot Lockwood in the stomach or something, but you might be right. I'll have to go back and watch it again.
When we first heard that we were going to deal with a rogue cop I suspected Montgomery. So that didn't surprise me (I was so hoping it wouldn't be Ryan or Esposito although they did lead you to think that it could be any one of the 3 of them). I was surprised at his sacrifice though and Kate's "I forgive you, I forgive you!" was heart-rending. And yeah, Kate's not dead. It's like Bones season 3. They've been renewed for next season, & I can't imagine Castle without Beckett.

I'm pretty sure that I saw the muzzle flash from Montgomery's derringer, and if he shot at that range, missing simply isn't possible. And if Lockwood walked away from that, they'd better be hunting a krypyonite bullet, cause nothing else is gonna stop him.

Just look at this:

Nobody human walks away from that.

Except maybe in Hollywood.

As for who shot Kate in the cemetery, I'm assuming that it's either Lockwood's employer, the one who they, supposedly, can't touch, or someone else who he hired to kill Kate and end the investigation once and for all. He obviously has no isea that Montgomery mailed his files to someone. (Castle, maybe?)

So why is Montgomery dead? Did he and Lockwood shoot each other at the same time, because I only remember hearing one shot.

They really should have given us a shot of Lockwood lying there dead, because it's not made clear at all.

Montgomery had already been hit at least two times, and was down. Lockwood, like all movie and TV bad guys, couldn't be satisfied with just standing back and putting a mercy shot behind his ear, he had to come over and gloat. By that time, Montgomery's 6 shot revolver was empty, so he felt pretty safe in doing so. That got him close enough for Montgomery's backup derringer to be used.

But I agree, we should have been shown Lockwood's body. As it is, he probably actually WILL turn out to be Kate's shooter, as nearly impossible as that actually would be.

As For Kate, herself, we all know that she will be back in Season 5, simply because we were told that ONE of the cast would die in the finale, not two. So my guess is that her doctor boyfriend, assuming that he is there to give her support at a time like that, and the Forensic Pathologist, who we plainly saw there, will, between the two of them, keep her alive until better equipped help can be called. In the meantime, Dr Motorcycle Boy, having heard Castle, will do the honorable thing and move to Los Angeles, leaving True Love to take its long denied natural course. Maybe. But not likely. At least not until the series finale, whenever that comes.

Hollywood is notoriously bad about the ACTUAL effects of bullets.
