Has anyone heard the buzz on Seth G's new one? Seems like it's got a good pedigree. Will&Grace people involved...

The Emmy-winning creators of NBC's "Will & Grace" David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are creating "Four Kings," their new comedy pilot for NBC. The executive producers of the Warner Bros. TV project will write it In the pilot it centers on a quartet of guys, childhood best friends, who live in New York.

was at the taping of episode [HASHTAG]#102[/HASHTAG] last night. ok, disclaimer... my twin daughters are in it, but even so, it was one of the funniest shows ever. the audience thought so too. the four kings are quirky, hilarious, and a great combination. Continue

The plot in a nutshell: Ben (Josh Cooke, the normal one), Barry (Seth Green, the angry one), Bobby (Shane McRae, the slacker one) and Jason (Todd Grinnell, the gay one) are four best friends from childhood, still tight after all these years. When Ben's grandmother dies, he inherits her lavish New York apartment and struggles with what to do with it. Does he move in with his girlfriend (Kiele Sanchez) and take their relationship to the next level or share it with his friends and have them move in?

What works: When the show steers clear of its "plot" (more on this in the next section), it works as just being about four buddies. The quartet actually feels like friends, not just random people used to bounce jokes off each other. They kid around, pick on each other, etc. just like most friends do without feeling forced. Seth Green without a doubt steals the show as the bitter Barry, and his scenes involving his equally as bitter girlfriend (Kathryn Hahn) are the pilot's highlights.

What doesn't: That being said, the "plot" element is just downright painful. Not satisfied with just being a sitcom about four buddies and their dating foibles, the show feels the need to tack on an unnecessary plot device which has Ben inheriting his grandmother's apartment and the baggage the comes with it. Even worse is that it all actually feels like an afterthought - a few brief flashbacks show that Ben's grandma used to call the group "The Four Kings of New York" (hence the title), but that's about it. Nobody really mourns her or misses her (despite the implied connection in the flashbacks), they just bicker amongst themselves.

The challenges ahead: Is there room for more comedy on NBC's drama-obsessed schedule? And in an era where "Joey" and "Will & Grace" find themselves struggling to maintain an audience should there be? We'll find out in 2006 on NBC.

OK. I like bitter, that's always a good thing in a sitcom character...
 
Well, if it features Seth Green, I'll definitely give it a chance! That guy is hilarious!
 
If hes bitter thats fine, if hes an angry kind of bitter though, like he was in W&G that will quickly become dull.
 
Low level bitterness is good. Snarky sarcasm, withering wit. We'll see...I always thought angry frustrated Scott Evil was fun.
 
Yeah but he was angry only cause his dad was a mook, plus he wasn't angry all the time. In Will and Grace he was just angry, angry angry angry!
 
Huh. Never saw Seth's W&G stuff, actually. Sounds like really exhausting work on his part, lol.

Exhausting on his throat. He spent most of it shouting. Although he yelled at Karen because she thought he was a child and he said something like "bitca[you know what i mean] I've got three gray pubes." certainly not Oz.
 
Yeah in the season...six or seven finale. The one last season, whenever that was. Jack gets his own show at OutTV (which starts as Seth's character hosting it but changes it), Grace starts decorating a hotel, Karen offends Beverly Leslie publically and Will starts working for Alex Baldwin (well his character).
 
Did anyone watch the pilot? It was actually a little better than I thought it would be, based on the mediocre reviews it's been getting. The grandma flashback stuff was indeed bad, they can drop that whole schtick right away...

But some of the one-liners were actually pretty funny. It flows a lot like Will & Grace...Seth was good, I thought.
 
I saw a bit of it. Liked the Seth character, but the others were giving me the creepy shivers so I changed the channel.

It's like you can sense talent, intelligence behind the writing"”but it's just jokes. The setup and characters, kinda prefab, off-the-shelf (possibly creepy, lol). You don't sense that the writers actually care about this creation of theirs...
 
Seen the first two episodes and somehow it just feels slightly off. Sure there are some fun bits in it and I do like angry Barry, but nothing that rocks my world or makes me able to tell it appart from other sitcoms.
 
I missed it, if it was on again last night. I wanna like this show. I like Seth. Maybe it could mutate into something better, by accident or something, lol.

The other three guys just seem sort of interchangeable, forgettable. They need a significant female regular. Seth's ex-girlfriend, with her twins, I dunno. Those twins are creepy, sorta funny. Hmm...
 
I only started watching it a few episodes in. I think that it's an okay show so far, it's just -for me- the characters are still a bit bland and are lacking something for them to stand out. Seth's character and (er, I still don't know all their names yet) the 'slacker' guy seem to have a bit more of character than the other two. I don't know.. for me, comedy works best in a sitcom when the characters are neurotic and weird and over-the-top. Like how in Friends, each of them were weird in some way, and each could be in the spotlight or be talked about by the rest of the group. Anyhow, I'm still giving the show a shot.
 
This just started on Living TV tonight, It's alright. Pretty funny but not exactly stand out from the other shows of it's type, but a good way to kill half an hour.

Just read that it's canceled - kinda sucks. Seths character is funny.
