Is anyone else as irritated as I am with the Buffy DVD's that Fox produced over a decade ago? I don't know if this has been discussed here before but I have noticed quite a few editing mistakes that made their way onto the DVD versions of the episodes that differ from the broadcast and streaming versions, I'm talking about the Region 1 DVD sets here just to be clear.

The most obvious one of course was the idiotic decision someone made to edit out all of the "Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer" recap segments for all episodes that had them. I believe they did leave one single recap for the first episode of season 2 "When She Was Bad", that had a recap of events from season 1. I don't know about anyone else but this really ticks me off, I consider those recaps a part of the episodes and I see no reason why Fox would want to cut these out.

Also by cutting out the recaps it also cut off the beginning of certain audio commentary tracks that began with them. Most notably in season 3's commentary by Michael Gershman for "Consequences" he began speaking at the start of the recap of "Bad Girls" but that part is edited out because the recap footage is not there. So instead the commentary begins abruptly and we don't even hear him introduce himself or what he said at the start.

This leads into my second complaint, because of them going out of their way to edit out the recaps the opening scene from "End Of Days" on the season 7 set is missing! The episode before ended with the bomb counting down as Faith found it and kicked open the case, when this episode begins it cuts right to the close up of the scythe in the rock and the bomb explosion isn't there. I can't believe this important scene is missing, all we see later is the aftermath of the explosion but never the actual blast. This is a major blunder on the part of Fox DVD editors and it's totally unacceptable!

On the season 3 DVD set the opening credits sequence for "Anne" and "Dead Man's Party" both have the season 2 version of Nerf Herder's theme song. The newly recorded season 3 version of the song seems to have been removed and replaced with the wrong track, why would they do this? Because of this the credits don't match up exactly with the song, I noticed this immediately and was so disappointed that a mistake like this also occurred. All episodes beginning with "Anne" through the rest of the series are supposed to have the newly recorded version of the song. "Becoming Pt. 2" is the last time we should have heard the old track.

Another minor difference I noticed is at the end of "Amends" when the Mutant Enemy logo goes across the screen in his red Santa cap he is supposed to be accompanied by Christmas jingle bells playing over his famous "Grr Arrgh" line. However on the DVD the jingling is missing.

On the season 6 DVD set the end credits for "Bargaining", "After Life", and "Flooded" are squished down to the bottom half of the screen while the top half is filled with the Buffy title card. No other episodes in season 6 or the rest of the series did this to the credits, and streaming versions don't either.

I'm very upset that the discs I purchased don't contain the complete series, these aren't the same copies of the episodes that aired originally. Fox released Buffy on DVD initially from 2002-2004, since then they have released the DVD's again at least three more times in different sets and packaging. I think it's unforgivable that Fox hasn't gone back and fixed these mistakes by putting out the true versions of the episodes when selling them again. They just keep dropping the same old discs in new packaging without making any corrections to these editing screw ups. Something needs to be done to get a new release of the series to put things right, otherwise we'll never have the correct version of the show on DVD.

I'm very curious what anyone else thinks of these alterations to the DVD copy of the show versus what was broadcast and what is available to stream. I can't be the only Buffy fan unhappy about these things, is anyone else as unsatisfied as I am? I personally think Buffy deserves much better than this, I would love to know what Joss Whedon's opinion would be on these DVD mistakes and how he feels about them never being corrected.

You could try and sent an e-mail regarding the subject to Fox.

Not sure if they would respond or not, but it's worth a try.

Don't think losing the recap sections is a great loss. When you watch a show on TV and there has maybe been a week between broadcasts then it is more important, but with the boxset chances are you are going to be watching it regularly throughout so you don't really need them.

The other stuff does sound bad though. I don't think we have the same issues with the UK releases.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the "Anne" and "Amends" issues, I'll have to check those out... but all the recaps are definitely intact and having watched season 7 quite recently, "End of Days", the recap and explosion are definitely there.

It does bug me when DVDs have stuff cut. As far as I'm aware, my Buffy DVDs are all as aired, but I have other series on DVD (and a couple of films actually) that have had scenes cut, bits hacked off, music changed. Some times it's for copyright issues, but some times I can't see any reason behind it. If anything, I think a DVD should have more, not less... if it's in the bonus features, fine, but put it somewhere.
