Does anyone know why they got paid huge amounts of money, but had nothing to do with writing or producing?? They didn't even have to step on the set. They did sometimes, but they got all this money. Could this have something to do with them producing the movie, maybe a clause in their contracts. The also produced Buffy as well and got all this money.
 
The producer of a movie, play, or tv show provides the "up front" money to get a show started. Once the show premiers, they get a share (usually the largest share) of the prophets made from the show.
 
It's kind of hard to make sense of the "who owns exactly what" as regards the Buffy franchise, because nobody in charge wants to offer any specific details.

This is the way I figure it though. The Kazuis directed, produced, and at least partially financed the Buffy movie. They (either along with, or under the banner of Sand Dollar entertainment) owned the rights. I believe it was Gail Berman was working for Sand Dollar and wanted to turn Buffy into a TV series. Joss went for it. Fox got involved. The bunch of them signed a deal where there was shared rights. Somehow the Kazuis got their names put in the credits of Buffy and later in Angel as executive producers as a result of that deal even though they didn't actually offer anything other than their names to the project.

There's this guy named Richard O Sullivan who likes to create bogus rumors to do with Joss's project. In 2005 he came out with one saying the Kazui's hired him to write a Buffy movie. That was BS, of course, but it was well discussed throughout Whedondom at the time. If you go to that link they're disputing the story. Start reading at about the middle of the page where they hash out the Kazui mess.
