Some think of Fred as little more than a device, a plot complicator. Maybe something like Dawn, Connor? I guess you could argue that all the Buffyverse characters besides the protagonists were "devices", something for Buffy, Angel to react against.
That is, until the respective supporting characters themselves get fleshed out, have their own protagonistic moments.
OK, Fred was a victim, a damsel in distress, eventually the scientific expert for Team Angel (for whatever that was worth)"”kind of Willowesque in that science geek respect.
She was sort of like the ornery teenager on the verge of independence at times. Getting angry when folks treated her like a defenseless girl.
And she "gave birth" to yet another plot device, Illyria.
Was Fred something worthwhile to you? More than an annoyance or lovable nerd? Did she contribute something unique to the Buffyverse?
