Fred and Spike

No, but seriously I agree that they had a nice relationship. It wasn't romantic, but you could still feel that Spike cared a lot and was protective of her. Fred seemed to see him in a better light than the rest of the gang. She thought he deserved a chance to redeem his soulless self, which not many characters in the Verse were ever ready to give to William.

I'll admit, the Spike/Illyria relationship just made that even better later on. 🤣

Unfortunately AtS ended at s5, but you could definitely see them turning romantic if given the opportunity. Definitely agree she saw the good in him, just as she did with Angel.

Also, Frike is a good combination! 😀

I think Fred gave Spike more of a chance to redeem himself is because his behaviour towards her was different, and she had no prior history with him to colour her feelings. Everyone else had seen souled Spike's actions be identical to those of soulless Spike, which was hardly deserving of redemption - you don't need to lack a soul to be an abusive narcissistic scumbag - or had too long experience with him without a soul. Plus, Angel S5 is when Spike truly started changing in personality.

Yes, great points. He had a clean slate with Fred.
I'm sure Angel would've voiced more of his opinions about Spike with her though.

And I'll forever be disappointed we were deprived of at least one more season of AtS.

Makes me wonder what multiples of dem pairings are better, Spike and Fred or Darla and Spike.

Personally I'd prefer Illyrian with Darla and Fred.

Well, I'm sure ignorance helped at first, but Fred did find out about some of the awful stuff soulless Spike had done later in S5. Plus, you'd expect Angel and the others to have shared some of that William the Bloody lore with her at some point.

Also, I totally disagree with the notion of Spike's actions being the same when he's soulless and ensouled. There were definitely differences, even in S7 of BtVS. But it's true that there were similar elements, which... shouldn't be that surprising considering in the Buffyverse vampires are supposed to keep some of the original human's personality/traits. If anything, it was weirder that Angel and Angelus were nearly two different people.

MAD Magazine once did a parody of Return of The Jedi, where Luke figured out that Leia was his sister, because she was the only girl in the movie. I mean, I like Fred too, but the bench wasn't very deep.

I second what @missmuffet said.
I think they work better as friends. They did have some good chemistry and maybe could have had a fling but I don’t think they would worked as a couple. They’re just so different. And let’s face it, Spike can be pretty abrasive and Fred is so sweet and nice.

True, but in Fred's case it would all have been second hand knowledge. For everyone else it was first hand. That can make a difference, especially when someone has changed and is behaving differently. And after seeing hell with a soul and getting his hands chopped off, Spike really did change.

In season five, Spike was an obsessed narcissist who stalked and abused Buffy because he could not tolerate her having a life that did not involve him, in season six, Spike was an obsessed narcissist who stalked and abused Buffy because he could not tolerate her having a life that did not involve him and in season seven, Spike was an obsessed narcissist who stalked and abused Buffy because he could not tolerate her having a life that did not involve him. Perhaps this was indeed William's base personality flaw.
