Fred/Gunn was the most boring ship in the Buffyverse

While rewatching some episodes of Fred and Gunn together in Season 3/4 I always found their relationship to be rather dull, and boring imo.

I thought they were cute. They were playful and had less over the top drama (until the professor bit) than most couples, which I found to be a nice change; but to each his own. 🙂

Compared to the doomed, ill-fated love of Buffy/Angel, Spike/Buffy, Tara/Willow and Giles/Jenny (apologies if your favoruite ship isn't mentioned here but these are the ones that illustrate my point best) a man and a woman with no super powers, magic or mystical whoosits between the does seem a little dull at first glance, but for that reason it's also the most realistic.

There are no romanticised notions of unobtainable love, no crazy metaphors of magic for intercourse and no fights for redemption, salvation or humanity. Just two normal people who fall for each other because they find themselves in close proximity on a daily basis. Like normal people starting relationships at work, college or a social group do in the real world. The most controversial part of their relationship is that it is inter-racial, which let's face it, is probably still more of a problem for some small-minded people than a girl doinking a vampire. Is it cool like many of the other relationships in the Whedonverse? Not really, but it is the kind of relationship most of us can reasonably expect to have. Minus the whole shoving someone through a portal to their death thing, or course 😀

I really liked Fred/Gunn. Fred/Wesley though? Now that's a snorefest.

Yeah, I feel the same way. It's just that they didn't have any chemistry, to be honest. I also thought the same about Wesley and Fred at first. It wasn't until I saw the ending of "Billy", that made me go, wow....this could really develop into something.

I found them adorable. It wasn't that exciting but the insanely dramatic and over the top relationships kind of annoy the crap out of me. It's so hard for me to take them seriously.

(I'm one of those people who has to stifle a laugh whenever Buffy starts sobbing to Willow in The Prom about how she feels like she's dying...I know she was in pain but jeez louise, it sounds like she's laughing).

I didn't like Fred/Gunn much, but only because I wanted her with Wesley from the start. I didn't hate them together, but I didn't love them either.

I don't think they were boring, just normal. Sometimes in television it's nice to have normal rather than drama after drama after drama, followed by more drama. 🙂

Terms like "totally mismatched," and "doomed from the get-go" leap immediately to mind when I think of Fred and Gunn, but I never really saw them as being boring together. Once they got past how much food Fred could eat at a setting and how much Gunn loved his "other girl," (his pickup truck) they didn't have much to talk about that wasn't job related.

Just like all of the other couples in the Whedonverse.

I didn't think it was dull, because I liked the normalcy of it, but I thought they were mismatched and didn't really enjoy watching it (partly because I was already half-shipping Fresley at that point). Also, the lack of chemistry.

Hey, I didn't make them boring! I'm just pointing out that they really really are 😛 😉 Plus, Wesley's obsession with Fred was rather creepy, makes it hard for a girl to root for that. In the end, Fresley feels like its sole purpose was to create a situation where Wes could go slightly bonkers.

I like Fred and Gunn, mostly because I like Gunn and I enjoyed that we got to see another side of him through this relationship.

I'd feel the same about Wes/Lilah. Now they had chemistry, and as messed up as it was, there was real feelings there too.

I loved Fred and Gunn..not as much as I loved Fred and Wesley, but they were good.

Buffy and Riley however...

Hm I disagree, I thought Fred and Gunn were really cute together. And it was nice to see, however shortly, a couple that actually seemed happy together for the majority of the time they were together. I'm sad that they broke up cause to me there were far more boring ships that got attention.

I don't know if "boring" is the right word. Jodast brought up a lot of really strong points about Fred and Gunn.

Are they one of my favorite relationships ever? No. Do I like the larger-than-life, love-to-end-all-love stories that Buffy has better? For sure, but I don't think that takes anything away from Fred and Gunn. I thought they had great chemistry, and it was nice seeing a relatively simple relationship that didn't get obliterated after two episodes.

The most interesting part of Fred and Gunn for me was the character development it forced upon Wesley. His reaction to it, and how it drives him to a darker and much more isolated place, was great T.V. for me.

One of the things I love about the Buffyverse is it's connection to life as we know it, even through all the fantasy of the demons and monsters. Gunn and Fred were just one of the things representing real life, by showing that not all relationships have to be over-dramatic and riddled with heart-ache (although obviously there was towards the end. I didn't feel gutted that the relationship was over the same way I did with Willow/Oz or Buffy/Riley, but their love was very real, and I can't help but like them for it.

PS I still love you. Our love will last way longer than Fred/Gunn (to keep it on topic), and will remain much more plutonic. Sorry to disappoint.
