Fred likes to bend her accent?

She bends her accent with her parents (technically she bends it with the gang), later with Gunn, & in S5 with Spike.
do you think her character was intended to be like that or were they just random jokes?

I think her character was supposed to be curious, & adaptive. that's why she bends her accent depending on the person she's talking to. am no talking about complete change of accent, but you can notice her trying every few episodes. that, or she just jokes around.

A lot of Southerners learn to 'lose' their accent when they're out of the south, so that explains why she seems to be 'putting one on' with her parents or in Spin the Bottle - really it's reverting to her own natural accent. As for her dipping in a few British words when talking with Spike, well the writers do tend to love British slang, so it's no surprise.

I had noticed that, I actually do the exact same thing, I steal words and mannerisms from the people around me depending on the group im with, it's odd cuz you say words you wouldn't normally use and do it without thinking, I usually realize only when I'm saying the word.

As for her Texan accent, I read she was supposed to sound like that all the time, but I guess they eventually let her sound normal or something. I really don't know, lol.

Also, Fred is a highly educated person, and, contrary to what Colonel Sanders would have folks believe, just about the only people who actually speak that way are the backwoods red necks.

Unless, of course, we're just putting on a show for "them dayum Yankees" who come down here expecting to hear it. Wouldn't wanta disappoint the tourists, now, would we?

This is exactly what happens with me. If I'm talking to people from my hometown I hear my Southern accent coming out more than if I'm with my Yankee friends. 😉

Well it happens with all accents that are deemed 'non-standard'. I had a few Scottish friends who were completely comprehensible in isolation, but together in a group? Subtitles time. Two Trinidadi friends who were the same as well.

Lol, me too. My accent always change when I speak English. If I watch Harry Potter or Merlin lately, my accent will be completely British. 😛 I didn't noticed Fred's accent, though. I don't even know what's Irish accent like. I can't tell if David sucks at it. Also, about that Molly girl in BtVS S7. They say her British accent was horrible. ^_^

That was actually mentioned in one of the commentaries on the Season 5 DVDs. Joss said that Alexis felt it was natural for someone to start losing their accent the longer they live in a foreign country, and I think he's absolutely right.

Yeh that definately makes a lot of sense, i suppose credit to Alexis for thinking about his character in that sort of detail, many people wouldn't have bothered.

Perhaps that explains why Spike's accent changed in Angel season 5 too.

It's seems like her accent was stronger when she first came on the show, but then faded away as time went on.

Lots of people change their accents around different groups....I do it all the time in the work environment so I'm taken seriously. My sister also can change from a NY accent to a Southern one easily depending on who shes around.
