SO seen as there are many new members (well new to me anyway). I was wondering if any of you might have felt that Fred and Spike could have been a potential couple?

She tried so hard to help him and they kinda got quite close as a result and I always thought they would make a cute couple - although somewhat different!!
 
I think that Fred's relationship with Fred was more like his relationship with Joyce during Season 4 of "Buffy." In both cases, he was having to adjust to a major change in life style (having a chip or being incorporeal) and those two special women helped him cope with his new existence. I never saw anything that even hinted at romance with eiter woman.
 
I would seriously doubt it after all of Spike's actions over on Season 7 Buffy- his tireless declarations of love and his speeches and such.
To fall for the very first woman he comes across after his reserrection would've seemed a touch shallow/insincere perhaps.

I think it was more important for somebody- someone who didn't have a history with Spike or know anything about him- to root for him and believe in his souled state, and that's who Fred was- someone who could see that side of him.
 
She wouldn't have put up with his wacky and he would have gotten bored with her, so even if they gave it a go all it would have done was run into a wall.

It's pretty common for people to do the "what if" in their mind and flirt a little when someone new comes into the group, then things shake out. She believed he was worth saving and he needed her to save him. It was all good, but once that played out there was nowhere else to go.

Sometimes we wonder what it would be like to be the sort of person who would end up with "fill in the blank". It's a game we play. Like we fall in love, just a little, with that idea of ourselves and work it over in our minds, then something else catches our eye, or we decide the fantasy isn't as much fun as we hoped and move on.
 
I think by the end of the season Spike could've moved on from his feelings for Buffy. After 'TGIQ' it was clear that she had done the same.

If Fred had still been alive? maybe, I don't really ship her with anybody, but Illyria/Spike? That's more like it. 😀
 
Well I might not be new to you @Nix but I'll answer anyway.

Can't say that I've thought too much about Fred and Spike to be honest and at the moment I got a hard time seeing it. Maybe someone can change my mind. As mentioned above, Illyria and Spike is much easier to see and I liked them a lot together. Or maybe I just like the idea Illyria keeping him as a pet. 😀 In the end that doesn't mean that it had been the better relationship of the two.

But "The Girl In Question" was a hoax, perpetrated by Angel and, most likely, Giles, to make both Angel and Spike THINK that Buffy had found herself a new snuggle puppy (and I don't think that it was any sort of coincidence that the new puppy was supposed to be someone who had a history with the two vamps, involving, among other things, stealing their women) As of the beginning of Season 8, Buffy had been celibate since leaving Sunnydale, and so desperate that she was entertaining dirty thoughts about Xander. Buffy/Satsu might be called the beginnings of moving on, since Buffy seemed more than happy to make it more than just a one night stand, but that was quite some time after the events in "The Girl In Question." The only one who could be actually accused of moving on after that little farce was that other vampire.

Firstly, this is only true if you bother to follow the godawful comics. Y'know, the comics that were written many years later with a massive 18 month time-gap in the centre? Joss's original vision was Buffy moving on from Angel and Spike in 'TGIQ'. Simple.

And even if you choose to take the comics as canon (which Joss himself does about oh, half the time) then she's still moved on from them for the simple reason that she isn't thinking about them, or missing them, or referenceing them except in a random dream, two wholes years after the fact.
Buffy's chief love interests in S8 are either her closest male friend or one of her slayer subordinates.

Angel is only an issue because he goes to the greatest lengths ever 😱 to grab her attention, and Spike has to wait around for years just to get a look in romantically.
So yeah, either way she'd moved on after S7.

Ignore them or not, godawful or gifts from the gods, whether you choose to read them or not, the comics are recognized as canon by the creator of the series, which means that they have to be accepted as such. And, yes, Joss has said on more than one occasion that he would not hesitate to rewrite or simply ignore the entire comic book series in preference to what he considered a better story, if he should ever choose to write, or allow to be written, a good enough story. Until that day comes, however, everything, from Season 8, Issue 1 to the present, and on into the foreseeable future, unless acknowledged as non-canon, such as almost everything from IDW after the "After The Fall" arc and Dark Horse's own "Spike" short story, is, in fact, canon.
 
I think Spike found Fred attractive and flirted with her as a way of getting to his goal of being recorporalized to persue Buffy. I think if there had been an Angel S6 it's very likely Spike and Illyria would have had a thing, it seemed to be moving that way. Spike likes his women smart and strong.
