What did you think of Fred turning into Illyria?

Personally, I hated it. I thought it was a horrendously stupid decision. Fred was a great character, and they replaced her with Illyria, who is in no way the equal of Fred. I liked Illyria, but I loved Fred, and hated the way she died. It was really cheesy, and I think Angel was trying to do the version of "The Body", but IMO, it really didn't work. *shrugs* Didn't really like Fred turning into Illyria AT ALL.

I loved Fred and was crushed when she died. And the first time around I wasn´t too fond of Illyria so I thought it was a very bad decision. But I´ve grown to love Illyria more and more. Now the problem I have is that it feels a bit rushed as many things did in the end. Which of course is because they got canceled and wanted to include a lot. I think it had been better if the whole Illyria thing could had happened in a season six instead. So even if it could have been better I now don´t have that much trouble with it. But Fred, poor Fred. :cry2:
 
I love Illyria and Fred equally. I can understand why a lot of people don't like it, but I thought seeing Amy Acker playing her was great. 😀 I wanted to see more!
 
I agree with Kin about the rush job. I think if Season 6 and beyond had happened as planned, people would have come to love Illyria. Especially since, IIRC, Fred was slated to resurface. I loved her anyway. I felt the whole Frunn/Fresley thing was getting very boring and repetetive, so the Willyria dynamic was very refreshing.
 
Yeah I didn't like it either. I loved Fred and thought she grew as a character every episode she was in (pretty much). Fred deserved more time on AtS, and even though Illyria was fun and all, she wasnt worth killing off Fred. I felt a bit like when they killed Dana on The L Word in order to bring up breast cancer and show that anyone can be killed by it etc. Which is true, and was an interesting storyline, although not a storyline worth killing the best character over. Same with Illyria and Fred.
 
Illyria was funny and all... but I just wanted Fred back :/
Watching the series I was so sure that she would come back from the dead and all... cause, c´mon, when Fred is almost having something, bluf, she dies? SO DAMN SAD
 
I loved Fred, don't get me wrong. I would have loved to see Fred and Wes get a chance at it.

But I love love LOVED Amy Acker, and getting to see her do something new was fantastic.

I'm rewatching Angel right now and haven't gotten to that part yet. I can't wait. Watching Fred die is so devastating, but the storyline is respectable, IMO.

Nooooooooo. Hole in the World/Shells touched and hurt me about a gazillion times more than TB ever did or ever will! (Might be, of course, because I hated Joyce almost as much as I loved Fred. :evillol: )
 
I loved it. I thought Amy Acker did a terrific job of portraying both characters. Fred was one of my favourites and it was devastating to watch her go, but I love the chances the writers took and the choices they made, while not always popular, were never stale. The possibilities for this character and how she interacted with friends and villains alike just made it that much harder for me when she and everyone else ended their season 5 run.
 
I think it was a good decision. I loved Fred as a character (more than I loved Illyria), but she had pretty much done all of her development in season 3 and was pretty much the same she was at the beginning of season 4. They had to give Amy an opportunity to show off her acting chops, and they did an incredible job of it...I was pretty much blown away every time Illyria spoke. In fact, I almost had trouble believing she was still Amy Acker.

Yes, it was a bit of a rush job, but I think they pulled it off very well...A Hole in the World and Shells are, in my opinion, two of the best episodes ever. And I DEFINITELY don't think they were trying to make an Angel version of The Body...in fact, they were pretty much opposites. The Body was meant to interpret death in the most realistic way possible while A Hole in the World was one of, if not the most fantasy-based episode from either series.

See I loved the change for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, I loved that Amy got to expand what she could do. She was very impressive as Illyria.
Secondly, I must admit, I was curious about the "old ones" ever since Giles mentioned them in like the second or third episode of Buffy.
Also, Fred had really grown as a character and she was reaching an impasse. Once a character reaches the happy and fulfilled stage of life in the Jossverse they usually kick the bucket. At least this way we still got to see Amy in action.
 
Yeah, I gotta give huge props to Amy Acker.

Alot of people don't give her the credit she deserves for the change from Fred to Illyria, but not only did she have to act in a different manner BUT she also had WAY more fight and stunt scenes that she didn't use before this.

She had to learn ALL that stuff to a higher degree to appear more effective.

Plus, I kinda liked 'blue.
 
I hated it. I mean, I like Illyria a lot, but I hated the suffrering turning process. It's so sad she had found new love and her life seemed to be better, then it suddenly became darker and darker.

But Illyria is so cool. So yeah, I just hated the turning thing.
 
I liked both Fred and Illyria.....but personally, I think Illyria is the only thing that kept me even watching season 5. After season 3, my interest in the show greatly declined.
 
Not to sound kinda up myself but I am the biggest Fred fan ever (don't try and argue me that, it's just my opinion of myself) and I cried, I cried for days when she died, I personally thought it was beautiful (and nothing at all like the body.)
Although I totally loved Fred, Illyria was damn awesome too.
Probably my favorite scene in the whole of Angel is when you see Illyria's fist go straight through tat deamons face. Just brilliant!
 
i voted for the second one.
i love fred, she's one of my favourite characters, but the concept of illyria was pretty awesome too.
amy acker did an absolutely incredible job and i loved the dynamic between spike and illyria and wesley and illyria.
like crazy flakes said, "a hole in the world" and "shells" are two of the best episodes, in my opinion, in the entire whedonverse.
 
To me I thought it was a rush job. It was interesting idea. But it was rushed. I wanted to see FRED/WES hook since the 3rd season but instead got to see Fred/Gunn pairing which was a terrible idea.

I never like the whole idea of Fred/Gunn pairing. They had no chemistry at all and took way too long for it too end. Gunn was just a roadblock between WES and FRED.

I understand that Joss doesn't like happy endings, which is fine, but I really don't understand him sometimes. He's inconsistent in some of the stuff he does. He drags the whole Fred/Gunn to death and had only one episode of FRED/WES. WES and FRED should have at least two or three episodes to themselves for the WES/FRED fans before killing her off.

WES and FRED ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

I missed Fred, but I liked Illyria. Her death was incredibly sad, but I definitely felt like it was done well.
Her soul was literally destroyed, and her death was just horrible. It's nothing like anything we've saw on Angel or Buffy before.
& I see no similarities to The Body either.

I think the reason most people think Fred's death was the saddest because of how she died.
Here we have probably the sweetest and most innocent character in the entire Buffyverse and she dies this brutal death.
I definitely understand why people think it's the saddest.

But back to the topic, I didn't want Fred to die, but I really liked Illyria.
However, I think because Angel got canceled, most people didn't have a chance to understand her character and grow to love her.

I hated the idea at first because I was really upset that they killed Fred... Illyria eventually grew on me and I learned to like her. I think it would have been better if they didn't get canceled.
 
I liked it. I thought it was an interesting thing to do, and she certainly was a fun wildcard in the last part of Season 5. I'd have more of an opinion on it if we'd gotten a Season 6, and I'd seen more of what her arc was.
