Fred's death to Angel's Advantage?

I'm confused.
I don't know why...but for some reason in "Power Play" when Angel says that he used Fred's death to his advantage...
Was it that he chose the world over Fred that worked to his advantage...like that showed the Black Thorn that he would be able to sacrifice someone close to him for evil?

I just don't get the whole thing, if someone could explain it to me that would be great and ease my mind.
Here's how I see it:
Illyria was destined to rise again.
Knox decided that Fred should be Illyria's host
Knox set the events in motion.
Gun released the cell from customs
Fred was infected.
Spike and Angel went to the Deeper Well
Spike and Angel knew they couldn't sacrifice thousands of people for one life, even Fred's.

Not sure how that makes Angel think he's a more trusting candidate for the Black Thorn. I'm sure I'm missing something.

Thing is in your reasoning you have gone from cold facts to subjective facts. That is subjective for example:

Spike and Angel knew they couldn't sacrifice thousands of people for one life, even Fred's.

Fact which still carries assumption:

Spike and Angel didn't sacrifice thousands of people for Fred's life.

What i mean by the assume part is that what we know is not what the Black Thorn knows. In fact we do not know what they know. For all we knew their knowledge before Angel made his case was even more basic:

Spike and Angel failed to save Fred's life.

Well, Angel has made it clear he was willing to do whatever it took to get the CBT to trust him enough so he could bring them down. Hence him signing away his chance at immortality, the Shanshu. And killing Drogyn.

Yes, it might have something to do with him willing to give up anything to "join" them...but I think mostly the reason he and Spike "let Fred die" (in the words of Knox) was because if she had lived, thousends would have died. Angel sees the big picture, and as much as he loved Fred, he knew she wouldn't want thousends to die because of her.

I guess I'm not clear either on why Angel said that he used Fred's death as an advantage to join the Circle of the Black Thorn. I guess you're right, and him letting her die would show them he was serious in joining them? That doesn't seem to make sense. I'll re-watch Power Play.

Anyone else have an answer for this?

I can't remember the dialouge, but as I recall, Lindsey said something about that Angel wouldn't even register on the black thorn's radar if he hadn't killed one of his own. So Angel let the black thorn draw their own conclusions about why Fred died and who killed her.

After all, all they see is that a human in Angel's team has been replaced by a demon-fighter. Maybe they assumed that Angel traded up.

But Angel didn't let Fred die so he could get a advantage. He liked her too much.

I just watched this ep. What happened is Angel hired an Assassian to kill... Drogan?(I forget his name), and the assassian told him the plans while attempting to kill this guy, but that is actually what Angel really hired him for, to not fully kill him, but just start the "rumour" that angel purposely killed Fred. So this made Drogan an enemy of Angel, and like Angel said, this guy is pure good, so if he's angel's enemy, then angel must be a bad guy. This, along with Angel's other heartless deals and favours he's been doing, allowed him to seem evil enough to join the secret society.

So Fred dies.
Angel lets people think he killed her.
Angel gets intitated.
Angel knows all the members.
Angel now has an oppurtunity to kil all the members.
Therefore, he took advantage of Fred's death and it was not for anything because he death allowed for all these evil people to be potentially killed.
