Rave y'all seen the Freedom Center's tv commercials?

I agree with almost every single one of them but this one below gives women in general the wrong message.

Who can tell me what is wrong with the Best Friends video

The one below is the best. Can anyone tell me what about the message makes it their best?

This one is also sends the wrong message to those who have immigrated here. http://www.freedomcenter.org/files/Videos/lunch30.mov There was a time when immigrants had to learn English to get jobs just like everyone else. If you moved to Germany you will be expected to learn German, and same goes for every other country that doesn't speak your native tongue. But hear we tell them it's alright to not learn and we pat them on the back. Vast majority of Americans speak English, Government is done in English, 99.99% of businesses do business in English, immigrants are supposed to get by in this how? Government paid for translators, business paid for?
 
While I agree that you should be required to speak English to become a US citizen, I would say that Americans working abroad would not necessarily be required to learn the native tongue, especially as so many outside of the US speak English.

Um, I agree with Buffy Summers. You don't really need to speak another language than English.. since everyone speaks English almost everywhere..

I hadn't seen those commercials but.. well, I'm not sure what problems you are talking about but they seemed a little strange to me, might not be the things you meant though...

I live in the US and at least everyday I have to deal with someone that lives here and doesn't speak English!

This is my biggest pet peeve (along with personal responsibility). If you are going to live in the US, learn the damn language, please, because I am not going to learn another language to make your life easier. If I were going to spend more than 3-4 months in another country, I would do my best to learn the language there (if it were something other than English).

Now closing down rant function. :smile2:

Here I was thinking that most people here would view the subject differently, God only knows how me any idiots have berated me for that opinion.

This place still may prove me wrong, though with the 5 thousand plus members.

I have known several people online who worked abraod and had to learn the native tongue.

I was in the states on vacation in October and a few times when I went to the store on my own the clerk would stare blankly at me when I spoke, and I speak English, but with a Scottish accent. It got to the stage where I was starting to get annoyed with the way they treated me, especially as I wasn't great with the coins figuring out what was what. But saying that some were really nice and recognising the different accent would help me figure it out.

Well, yeah, if you live in the US (or another English-speaking country) you probably should know how to speak English, that's always a plus 🙂

And I'd just like to add that even though almost all of us who don't have English as our first language, understand English and are more than willing to speak the language (it's always a lot of fun, not too often I get the opportunity to speak though).. We do very much appreciate it when people try to learn how to speak our language, of course.

That's great, but several people a case does not make. I know several people who are foreign born who came to this country and learned English as well. 🙂
 
I agree. I think that America should adopt English as their official language, I always have. It makes it much easier to communicate when everyone's speaking the same language.

If I went to another country, I would make sure that I could speak the language there. Most places appreciate it when you try.

It makes sense, as it will make their life easier. My brother lives abroad and his base is in Germany so he learned German. And then they decide to send him to different countries so he has to learn their language in order to communicate with the engineers who don't speak English either at all or quite badly.

It's not *legally* the Official language. It's the language most people in this country speak, but there's nothing official about it in the government. That's why people can take their citizenship tests/drivers tests/etc in other languages.

We had a big debate about this in my Poli Sci class in college. It got so heated, but it can be a really touchy subject.
 
Plus, if you move to another country, you should try to learn the language anyway, whether you have to or not.. You don't get that opportunity too often, and it's always fun to be able to speak or understand many different languages. (I'm no good at it though, learning languages, so I probably wouldn't.)
 
Just to explain I was posting because the topic was saying that if all Americans working abroad learn those languages, then all people who come to the US should learn English. My only point was that there's room on both sides for improvement.

I don't disagree that you should learn the language of the country.
