Beta: None, I don't write fanfictions often and I'm impatient. So I am sorry if my editing isn't so good.
Summary: In this AU story, Buffy Summers moves to Sunnydale and is confronted with things she had never expected to face and learns to understand that not everything is written in black and white.
Notes: I don't write fanfiction, especially not Buffy fanfiction and this is my second attempt at a Buffy related fic. Some characters are depicted slightly differently due to changes made to suit the fic and many ties are changed. That's all I will say.
A dark alley, crosses, fire, books with strange words in them"¦some strange beeping sound? What?
The drowsy, it's all a dream feeling slowly but surely began to take control of Buffy Summers body. However, unlike any normal day, this phase didn't linger with a feeling of relief or disappointment. As the sixteen year old girl opened her eyes, her mind harboured only confusion.
That hadn't been a normal dream, it had been intense"”and it was hard to simply shrug it off as the aftermath of the scary movie marathon she had had with some of her friends as a goodbye party several nights previously.
Rolling over, intent on hitting that button that meant the shrill beeping would cease to exist for a few more minutes; Buffy's vision was disturbed by the bright rays of sunshine streaming through her open curtains. Then the memory of her deliberate adjusting of her alarms timing shot back into her head and she groaned. There was only so much she could avoid and now it was time to go and embrace a new world.
If all that hadn't been enough to shock her awake, her mothers sharp knock on her door would have done the trick. Seconds later, the door opened and her mother stood there, fully dressed and arms folded.
"I thought the point of knocking was a person seeking permission to enter" Buffy mumbled, her voice coming out groggy as she squinted against the sunshine. If she had heard the comment, her mother still didn't look amused.
"Do you know what time it is?" she wanted to know, her tone making her annoyance even more apparent than her expression was.
Buffy turned her squinting eyes and observed the clock on her beside table.
"9:30"¦unless that was rhetorical" she said, pulling herself up so she was in a sitting position and eyeing her mother.
"Yes, Buffy"¦it is 9:30. And I distinctly remember asking you to set your alarm for 7:00". Her mother really did look mad, maybe Buffy should have done what she'd been asked. A few extra hours of sleep really wasn't worth the glares she was sure to be receiving for the rest of the day.
"I'm sorry Mom" Buffy apologized, pushing her matted hair back from her face and swinging her legs out of her warm bed. "But 7:00"¦that's a little-"
"Early? Buffy, I know you think that things like this can be done with a snap of my finger but moving takes a little more effort than that"”which is why it's called moving". Joyce Summers sighed, looking around her daughters half packed room. "Angel's been up for hours helping us pack and we would have gotten things done even faster if you weren't being so lazy"
Geez, why couldn't parents just accept an apology?
"Well, isn't Angel just the sweetest little"¦Angel" Buffy rolled her eyes at the poor and slightly lame wording.
Joyce just sighed, looking at her daughter and shaking her head.
"You will get dressed, eat breakfast and then you will help us pack up your bedroom. We have to leave in two hours"
And then she left.
Within a few minutes Buffy was dressed and making her way slowly down the stairs. Every now and again she would rub her eyes, hoping the feeling you got when you had slept in"”the feeling of drowsiness"”would stop plaguing her soon.
"Oh, look, it's the bad child"
She had reached the bottom of the stairs and almost immediately Angel had something to say. Buffy rolled her eyes. Was it like, a rule that older brothers had to be annoying? Was there an older brother handbook?
"Wow, you can do better than that. I should know" she said, walking into the kitchen and spying a lone bowl and packet of cereal lying in wait.
Angel followed her, deserting his duty as "˜the good child' in order to irritate Buffy some more. Well, maybe those weren't his intentions but in Buffy's mind, that's what he was doing.
"Couldn't you annoy me from over there?" she asked, pointing back to where he had been carrying boxes out to the movers van a moment before. "Seriously, just your presence is annoying. You can frustrate me without having to stick to my side, you know?"
He chuckled, leaning against the counter and watching her as she began to pour cereal into the bowl.
"You don't want me to have any fun" he stated, feigning a look of hurt. "But I suppose you not wanting me here just gives me more reason to stay"
"I wonder if the "˜just ignore them and maybe they'll go away' tactic works with you" she said, lifting her spoon to her mouth.
"You don't have any milk"
"Apparently not" she glared at Angel, rolling her eyes before she actually realized what she said. "Oh, great"¦Mom!". Quickly, she jumped up and began walking towards the door.
Their mother appeared seconds later, looking harassed. The first thing she saw was Angel, apparently doing nothing and a pile of boxes in the hall.
"Perfect, just perfect" she exclaimed, sarcasm bouncing off the walls. "Now both my children are slacking. Angel, can you please get back to work and ignore your sister and Buffy, what do you want?"
Angel heaved a sigh and walked from the room, picking up where he left of in his dutiful work.
"There's no milk" Buffy explained, pointing to the table with the cereal, bowl and spoon upon it. "Surely you noticed that when you were laying out a balanced breakfast"
Joyce's eyes widened and she shook her head.
"Oh, god, I must have packed it already" she looked around, frantically as if it might jump out at her from an unexpected location. Then she looked back at her youngest. "I'm sorry Buffy but that's what you get for sleeping in. Now you'll just have to wait"
"Wow, Mom, that's great parenting. Let your youngest child starve while you move her out of her childhood home"
After one frustrated look, Joyce turned and left the room to deal with a man who was obviously helping them move and had just about dropped one of her mothers' vases on the floor. As she turned to clear up her non-breakfast things, Buffy heard him mutter something about being a trainee.
"Buffy!"
The sound of crashing, cardboard on pavement and squealing girls' voices caused Buffy to turn and grin. Aylia and Heather, the girls she considered her best friends had appeared, obviously arriving to say their goodbyes. However, upon entry they had accidentally knocked Angel into the door framed and caused him to fall onto the pavement outside, dropping his new boxes.
"As long as that wasn't my stuff" Buffy called to Angel, reaching out to hug Heather and Aylia in turn as they engulfed her.
"Oh my god, this house looks so bare" Heather exclaimed, turning around in the middle of the living room in awe. "Do you know different this looks?"
Buffy laughed at her friend, looking around the room herself and taking it in.
"No, the thought hadn't even occurred to me" she teased. "But when things are changed they often look different"
"I'm going to miss this place" Aylia said; sound reminiscent as she looked around. Then she caught Buffy's glance. "And you, of course"¦mostly you"
"Don't worry, Ay, you don't need to tell me that you love me" Buffy said, laughing again although suddenly it was taking actual willpower not to burst into tears. They hugged again, and the familiar scent of Heather's strawberry perfume caused more sweet memories to come flooding in.
The three girls sat down on the floor, leaning against the bare wall, not quite knowing what they should say.
"I just can't believe you have to move, You're going away and we'll probably never see you again" Aylia said, looking at her silver nails so that she didn't have to look around at the emptiness.
"Oh, dude! Am I the only one who feels like we just walked in on a really bad chick flick" came the voice of Austin Rivers, one of Angel's hot but annoying friends. That's how Aylia, Buffy and Heather had come to refer to the group.
"You didn't tell us your brother had invited them" Heather said, rolling her eyes a little at the group of boys piling into the living room. "I thought it was just us girls"
"So did I" Buffy assured her, but catching a glimpse of Hunter Evansten, she suddenly didn't mind. Hunter was somewhat of her boyfriend, although he was Angel's friend too which explained the invite.
She turned to her friends and offered an apologetic smile.
"You'll be right back" they said in unison, laughing as Buffy nodded and ran to join Hunter by the front door.
He smiled when he saw her, still taking in the scene of the living room.
"What is this, some kind of moving party? I thought we had that last week" he said, laughing as Buffy threw her arms around him with enthusiasm.
"Yeah well, you know Angel. He can't let me do anything without getting one up. Invite two people and you get fifty"¦or something to that effect" Buffy said, smiling up at him and feeling that this was definitely a bittersweet moment.
"You didn't invite me" he said, looking genuinely hurt.
"Actually, I didn't invite anyone but they came anyway. But it doesn't matter, you're here now". Standing up on her toes, she leaned in for a kiss, knowing that this probably was their last one. Hunter, no matter how sweet he was, wasn't the type for long distance relationships.
"My god, you have to be kidding me" Uh-oh, Joyce was on the scene.
"I leave for five minutes to get everything in order and the place turns into a teenage party? I thought you kids already said your goodbyes, you know we have to leave in"¦" she checked her watch and then looked even more panicked. "We have to leave in less than an hour"
With lightening speed, Buffy pressed her lips to Hunter's once more before whispering
"You might want to leave now"
He really didn't have to be asked twice and pretty soon the room was clear with the exception on Aylia and Heather who stayed to say their last goodbyes.
"Bye, Buffy" Aylia said, giving her one last hug and heading towards the door where she stopped to wait for Heather.
"You'll call?" Heather asked, looking down at Buffy from her height of 5'9.
"No question. I promise" Buffy said, giving her friend a hug and sayigoodbye.
Both kids turned to face Joyce who didn't look quite so angry and parent-like anymore. She still looked flummoxed and panicky but she smiled at the two of them, apologies in her eyes.
"I'm sorry to rush you two, but we really do have to go soon. Okay, your room has been cleared Buffy and there is an energy bar in my purse that you can eat until we find somewhere to stop"¦is there anything else?"
Buffy and Angel shook their heads.
"Well, it's time to go then" Joyce said, sounding relieved that the leaving stage was over and they were ready on time.
"Sunnydale here we come" Buffy muttered, following Angel towards the door.
