Okay, this is a plot bunny that has been nibbling at my brain for the past few months. And the bunny grew until it was this huge evil wererabbit thing that was forcing me to write this story. So I erm, did.

Summary:It is completely and utterly AU from the moment Angel throws Darla out of the apartment in the timeline of the Angel Season Two episode 'Epiphany'. Darla, having been told that she never made Angel happy but Buffy did, sets out on a vengeance warpath and heads back to Sunnydale, intending to rip Buffy limb from limb. But on a Hellmouth things never go how you initally plan them to, but you can always count on things being equally bad...

Warning: There will be lots and lots of character death in this story, but you know not over-the-top-this-is-ridiculous-lots but you know, there will be a fair amount. So if that isn't your gig, feel free to try anyway or just slowly back away now. This is technically a work in progress, but as I have a chapter-by-chapter layout planned and I'm obsessively organized when it comes to two things- writing and fashion- this will be update regularly. At least every saturday and perhaps, if you know my life doesn't get in the way, on Wednesdays also.

It is a Joyce-centric-ish fanfic. Blame Jane Espenson for writing so many good Joyce eps, and blame Kristine Sutherland for being so marvellously talented and playing the character so well. It's all their fault. Really it is. (I guess I should also thank them I suppose .:: sigh ::.)

And of course, feedback is very much appreciated. Hope you like and enjoy the first chapter.

Chapter One: Perfect Despair

"You still have a soul," Darla spat in disgust, holding the red bed sheet tightly around her form as she backed away from the still ensouled Angelus, as though she felt a good vampire looking upon her naked flesh was worse than any rape she'd experienced while she had been alive.

"I still have a soul..." Angel repeated in stunned agreement, walking back into the apartment, walking past Darla as though she no longer held any interest at all for him, to sit on the bed moments ago they had been having passionate sex in again and again.

"But how?" Darla asked, sounding more confused than anything as she walked after him, sheet still held tightly around her, "But we..."

"Yeah.." Angel nodded in agreement.

"And you..."

"I know" He agreed somberly, beginning to get dressed at a patient steady rate so unlike the frantic, desperate attitude he had adopted when he had come face to face with Darla hours before.

"Then I..."

"Three times," He confirmed.

"You're not evil," Darla truly couldn't comprehend this fact, this hitch. Sex, a moment of perfect guilt-free happiness and he became her boy again. She detested this mopey conscious bearing Angel. He was boring, bland. Awful. Tasteless, "I don't understand. Was I- was it not good?" She let out a short laugh of pure disbelief. She was always good. Always, "Well, I don't accept that. You can't tell me that wasn't perfect. Not only have I been around for four hundred years, but I used to do this professionally, And that was perfect. I'm always good!"

"And you were," Angel looked sympathetically over at the desperate Darla, "But you never made me happy"

"I...never made you happy?" Darla could barely form the words, she loathed them so much, she didn't even choose to believe them, "I didn't make you happy but that...that cheerleader did?!" Oh no, nuh-uh, no way. No way was that little blond bitch of a Slayer better in bed for him than her. Several generations they'd been together, having sex the likes of which could be only be described as having the ability to move mountains and now he was telling her that never made him happy?

"We're done Darla," Angel stated simply and somberly, standing up from his seat on the bed now he was fully dressed and he seemed to tower over her more than normal. She had always been the strong one in their relationship, always, even when he thought he was the dominant, but here he was seeming to tower over her as though she were the frightened little whore she had started out as. She didn't like this. In fact the anger it caused to burn inside her made her feel more murderous than usual. "Let yourself out. Get dressed and get out. Because the next time I see you, I will have to kill you"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drusilla had left Darla to return to Sunnydale shortly after Angelus had tried to set both of them alight. She had gone back to try and get Spike to join them, to 'reunite their family' she claimed. Darla couldn't care less. Spike had never been a real interest of hers. A silly boy who still had fantastical thoughts of vampires even after he became one himself. However, Darla couldn't deny that she needed both of them now, or at least she needed Drusilla. The two of them were the only vampires to have survived a long period of time in Sunnydale, the Hellmouth and the home of the reigning Slayer. And it was there where Darla wished to now go. To Sunnydale, to the Slayer. The little bitch who stole Angel's heart. It wasn't really his heart though was it? You can't steal a heart that is no longer beating, that no longer pumps blood through the veins. She had stole his soul though. Oh yes, she had done that. In more than one way. And it was for that that Darla was going to have her vengeance, the little bitch was going to pay.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vampires had a heightened sense of smell. It was a wonderful gift in her opinion, one that was so often rejected by others of her kind. No, not rejected. Unappreciated. But Darla appreciated it, reveled in it even. You could smell the fear on your prey, it was like an aphrodisiac to her. Erotic, charging yet at the same time calming and relaxing to the demon within her. And the more fear she smelt upon them the more she felt their heartbeats race, their blood pumping faster and hotter which only encouraged her feeding frenzy. She had sired very few because of this matter. She mostly devoured, rarely savored.
The strong sense of smell had other qualities and advantages too though. One vampire could smell it's offspring, no matter how far down the line it was and Drusilla, being a childe of Angelus' was not very far down the line at all, and having also been her own sire in a weird twist of fate, so Darla easily found her. In an abandoned building dramatic and fantastical enough for Drusilla's tastes, just on the outskirts of Sunnydale.

"Drusilla!" Darla sang out pleasantly, "Grandmother's home!" There was no answer though, no distant, poetic reply. Drusilla was still here wasn't she? She hadn't yet moved on? No, Darla could smell her strong enough to know she was somewhere around here. The question was where."Drusilla...where are you?" She asked gently, walking softly around the place, looking in every dark corner.

"My dear boy's gone all away," Drusilla suddenly spoke out into the darkness and Darla turned to see the dark-haired vampire walk out of the shadows.

"Pardon?" Darla frowned.

"He's gone all away, he doesn't like to sing our little songs anymore" Dru moaned.

"Drusilla, what are you talking about?" Darla asked directly. Spike and Angelus had always had patience for Drusilla's insane ramblings, loved to listen to them enjoyed them, but Darla had never had the patience for the thing. She's always been a straight-up sort of woman and she didn't have time for mad mumblings.

"Spike, he's gone away," Drusilla explained, "Terribly awful he was. Didn't set me on fire though...just wanted to put it out. Wood to my chest. Hard and pressing. Hard and pressing"

"He tried to stake you?" Darla couldn't believe it. Spike was devoted to the woman. Even once he was turned he had kept his soppy attitude about eternal love- and it was always about Drusilla. Darla laughed softly in disbelief, "Well, he wouldn't do that. He wouldn't do - you must have misunderstood. Maybe it was one of your little games" She smiled

Drusilla shook her head sadly.

"No, no games to play. The only games he plays now are with her. He's gone away to her, no getting him back now"

"He's gone to who?" Darla asked, stepped toward her as she did so. Drusilla didn't answer at first, merely continued to look down at the floor with a glazed expression, stroking one of her favored porcelain dolls. Suddenly she stopped though and slowly lifted her head to look directly into Darla's eyes as she answered:

"The Slayer...he's gone to Slayer...he's got her all about him...reeks of him...reeks of death...of borrowed conscience. That and little metal chips giving little shocks all around his head"

So, Darla was confused by the last part about metal chips and shocks but she certainly understood the first. Not only had Buffy taken Angelus from her, never to be returned, but now she had stolen Drusilla's man as well? That was it, Darla no longer cared how petty or whether it was revenge or not anymore; one way or another Buffy was going to die bloody.

Joyce Summers sat in the living room, marveling at how entirely quiet the house was for once. Both Dawn and Buffy were staying at their Dad's for the weekend. Dawn had been excited, but Buffy was extremely reluctant. Hank had hardly been in their lives for a while now, only very occasionally calling up claiming he wanted a father/daughter weekend (usually, Joyce had figured out, when he had broke up with his most recent secretary). Dawn was always delighted by this announcement but as she had got older, Buffy had become less and less enthused, developing a cynicism about her Father that eldest siblings from divorced families tended to develop.
And so, Joyce had the house to herself. Which had been wonderful the first few hours...and then it got lonely. Sure she may constantly complain about the noise and the mess her daughters made, but when they weren't here...the house just didn't feel the same. No matter how much she claimed to need time to herself, she always missed them when they were gone. Always.

To make the emptiness of the house even more noticeable, when the girls were away none of the others ever stopped by, almost as though forgetting she were still there. Not that it was surprising. After all, she wasn't one of their...what was it she had heard call Dawn call it? The Scoobies, that was it. She wasn't one of those, so it wasn't surprising that when Buffy wasn't here they chose not to stop by. Occasionally Xander would come over for a few hours with mostly homemade food on his mind, but nevertheless she was always glad to see him, and even more occasionally Rupert would stop by, perhaps in desperate need of some adult conversation which, being the mother of two young daughters, was a need Joyce could understand.

So when their was a knock at the door, Joyce immediately presumed it was one of these two, so she didn't even bother to look out the window before she pulled open the front door.

However, it was neither Rupert nor Xander stood there. Not even Anya or Willow, which it very, very occasionally sometimes was but instead was a petite blond girl, wearing jeans and a red top. Looking very normal, very average, but for some reason she struck Joyce with a feeling of familiarity. Blinking the low, almost-set sun out of her eyes, she tried to focus on the girl seeing if some recognition would come to her. It didn't.

"Hello," Joyce greeted her, but her own puzzlement spoke in the word and it came out more of a question.

"Hi," The girl smiled back at her, peering past her as though looking for something and Joyce instinctively stood more centrally in the doorway, protecting her home from the prying eyes of strangers. "Buffy's not here is she?" Darla asked casually. She remembered the Slayer's Mother. That had been the night she had died for the second time. Angel had staked her, all for this woman's daughter. God, it always came back to her didn't it? Buffy. Back then this woman had been entirely oblivious to their world, if she hadn't have been Darla knew she would not have freely invited her into her home without even considering what she could be. However, that was almost fours years ago now and so many things could have changed. Things had changed for Darla after all. She'd been human, dying, vampire, now rejected. So, maybe the Slayer's Mother now knew of her kind...maybe that was why she wasn't saying the magic words. 'Would you like to come in and wait'. Such a simple thing and yet it gave a vampire so much power, so much control. However, Darla had been invited in before and a vampire was forever welcome until the invitation was revoked by ancient, powerful rituals, so she should be able to walk right in anyway. But did that rule apply? This was her second life as a vampire so would she need a second invite? She certainly hoped not. "I've been looking for her..." She elaborated if only to buy time until she saw Buffy or found out where she was. As she said this, she casually brushed past Buffy's Mother with a presumptuous grace she knew threw people too much to ever question it, and she was serenely delighted when she came across no barrier and instead walked right in. Once in the hall, she turned to look back at the woman and saw that indeed she did look a little less on edge than a moment before. Her entry perhaps 'proving' to the woman that she wasn't a vampire. More fool her and luck for Darla since she couldn't remember meeting the seemingly young girl before.

"I'm afraid Buffy's not here, she's staying with her Father for a day or so..." Joyce explained, frowning at how the young girl had just strolled in as though she owned the place. She looked no older than Buffy, but something about her, the way she held herself, the way she stood made her seem so much older than her years. "Don't I...don't I know you from somewhere?" She asked, trying to place the feeling of recognition and familiarity.

The 'young' blond turned to look at her, a peaceful yet at the same time all-knowing smile on her face as she nodded gently in confirmation, beginning to pace slowly and comfortably around the living room.

"Yes," She told her, "We've met before. A few years ago actually..."

It was as the girl said these words, that Joyce was finally able to place her face and she nodded and smiled in recognition, in relief even as she realized she knew the girl.

"Oh yes, it was when we first moved to Sunnydale wasn't it? You were, uh, tutoring Buffy with her...history, right?"

"That's right," Darla nodded yet again, continuing to stroll around the living room, brushing her hand casually over mantelpiece and ornaments adorning it, taking in everything that was the Slayer. It was all so...homey. She detested it.

"Yes, that was the night..." Joyce trailed off as all the memories of that night came back to her. The girl's name was Darla, yes she remembered that. She also remembered fainting in the kitchen, Buffy had found her and called an ambulance to take her to the hospital. She had been told by the doctors that she must have fell on a barbecue fork despite the fact that had no such utensil in their house. It was only in later years when Joyce had found out about Buffy's secret identity that it had been explained to her that the faint scar that remained on her neck was not the result of clumsiness, but rather a vampire bite. The vampire being...as her thought process stopped at a dangerous place, Joyce froze in fear. This girl was the vampire...but the sun wasn't even down completely. Apparently it was down enough. Oh god, she was trapped in a house with a vampire with Buffy out of town, so no chance of her smashing through the window again such as when Faith had been holding her hostage in her own house. She went to back away, to put as much distance between her and the vampire as possible, but their was a resistance at her back and as she turned to look what was stopping her she gasped in shock and horror as she realized Darla was already behind her.

"Aww..." Darla pouted, putting her hands on Joyce's shoulders so she was forced to look at her face, now in complete vampire visage, "Did I ruin the surprise?" She spun Joyce around to face while pushing her away roughly so as to shake her up as though she were a misbehaving young child she were attempting to shake the information out of, "Now...where's Buffy?"

"Why would I tell you anything?" Joyce managed to reply despite the fear that was threatening to consume her completely. For her efforts she was thrown back towards the staircase by Darla, landing painfully on the floor.

"Because I can do a lot worse than that to you," Darla replied simply with a patient sigh, but then suddenly her eyes lit up, "Oh but wait...you already told me where she is didn't you?" Joyce didn't reply, didn't nod or shake her head, didn't give any indication that she knew what the vampire was talking about, "Yes...staying with Daddy isn't she?" She smirked, "Now, I don't suppose you'd care to tell me where Daddy lives, would you?"

Joyce didn't say word, she remained silent while pulling herself back up and attempting to keep her balance despite the pain of the fall roaring through her entire body and Darla sighed again.

"Thought not," She said simply, striding towards Joyce with purpose and grabbing her left arm tightly in her small, feeble looking hand. "But I'm a Take-Back-The-Night kinda girl and I like to give women more benefit than the guys, so I'll give you a second chance" She leaned in close, knowing she was intimidating Joyce, frightening her more than she had ever been in her life, "Where is your daughter?" When Joyce remained silent, closing her eyes tightly so as to shut out the terrifying image of Darla before her, the vampire sighed in frustration and threw the forty-one year old away from her. Though it wasn't as roughly as before and Joyce merely stumbled a few steps forward before managing to gain her balance. Darla saw her eyes dart over to the direction of the front door, "Don't even try it," She said simply, fleetingly, knowing exactly what the woman had been thinking, "Now, since you won't tell me where Bitchy is, I'm guessing the only option here is to...well, kill you" The word alone made Darla grin, her fangs gleaming in the golden light pouring out from one of the Art Nouveau lamps that adorned a side table in the living room. "I also enjoy a good kill makes me feel..." She searched around for the appropriate word and smiled when she found it, "Refreshed. Plus, it'll give me a real kick seeing how much pain it causes that daughter of yours" Darla monologued, walking towards Joyce. "Of course..." Darla said thoughtfully, a plan more devious than she had purposely intended forming in her mind, "Drusilla can be interesting and insightful at the best of times but her complete an utter insanity?" Darla rolled her eyes in exasperation, "It can be so annoying!" She laughed a little after this, sounding a little crazy herself as though Drusilla's own insanity was getting to her, "And three I'm told isn't really a crowd, is it? The more the deadlier right?"

It was then that Joyce understood what was really on Darla's mind. And it was nothing good. She could deal with her own death. Joyce had faced the concept once this year and in a way, felt she had already come to terms with it. She was no longer fearful for what awaited, only afraid of how her daughters would cope if she were forced to suddenly leave them like that. However, she knew she'd sooner die a solid death protecting her daughter, leaving them, no matter how unfortunately, without her too look after them anymore rather than submit to the outcome Darla was 'offering' her here. An unlife. An evil, soulless creature who, she had been told, would imitate her in every step, every word every glance, every thought but would never really be her. It would just use her image to fool and trick others, to lead them into a death trap. To lead Buffy into a death trap. No, she would never have that. But, as much as she hated to admit it, if it was what Darla intended there wasn't much she could do about it. She didn't have superstrength like her daughter, she didn't have the training or knowledge that Rupert had nor the experience Buffy's friends had all gained over the years. She had always remained out of the supernatural circle and she realized that, ironically, that was going to be her downfall.

"If you...Buffy will..." She began to threaten but Darla cut her off knowingly.

"...be all too late to do anything about this," She finished knowingly with a sinister smile. In once last desperate attempt to save her own life, Joyce went with pure gut instinct and dashed for the door, but no matter how fast she ran Darla would always be quicker and she reached the only escape route before she did, blocking the doorway casually, shaking her head 'no' at her, letting her no that there was no escape this time. No one to come save her.

Before Joyce could move away again, at lightening quick speed, Darla grabbed her by the arm pulling her towards her. She roughly shoved her head to the side, knocking the curls back so her neck was vulnerably bare. Joyce tried to tug away, wriggling, knocking her elbow back, kicking, anything to make Darla let go but she was too confident and too strong to be effected by any of this from a mere mortal woman. Darla couldn't help but smile as she saw the scar of a vampire bite she herself had created...and now she was going to finish off what she'd started.

"See, my mark's already there..." She said to Joyce, aware yet not caring that woman would be too afraid or concerned with trying to get away to hear anything she had to say, "It's strange...I can still smell you on me, even though it was so many years ago. You smell of me...with just a hint of..." Darla identified the smell immediately, it was as familiar as her own,"Angelus"

With the mention of Angel's name all the vengeance and rage from before came rushing back to her with startling power and all 'reasoning', all desire to talk or monologue at all left her just as quickly and she leaned over, sinking her teeth into the neck, and drinking ferociously, until Joyce Summers' heartbeat slowed to an almost no-more...

Very nice. Thanks for posting!

I like stories that have a lot of Joyce and Darla. Both are interesting characters. I wish I'd seen more of them on the shows (well, maybe not in Angel -- Darla was sort of an obsession there for awhile).

Anyway, please post the next installment soon!

--Palabra--

This is quite excellent, young lady. :: tu ::

Please do continue this when you have more. The Buffy Boards has seen so much writing talent in days of yore, and very nearly all of it has fallen by the wayside. Don't become another one of those statistics. :: tu ::

Hey glad you guys liked.
Palabra Vampiress- I'm a Joyce and Darla fan too and there will be a lo of them in this story, although which features more might alternate constanly and also, there will be plenty'a Giles (obviously...)
Old Master III- Thanks for the kind words, and I'm not about the become another statistic. Don't worry. In fact, here's the next installment.

Chapter Two: Fruit off the Vine

Darla remembered her own rising. Both of them. Both times she had had to crawl her way out of the ground, claw her way through the soil to pull herself up muddy and dirty. She'd only had to do it the second time round because Drusilla was a vampire traditionalist. All about rising from the earth, underneath the sky...it was all very poetic admittedly, but it wasn't practical for Darla's needs right now. If a vampire rose in the the home they had as a human, it ensured that they would have free invitation there. And that was what Darla required. It wouldn't do for Joyce Summers to rise and then not be able to infiltrate Buffy's life. Not being able to enter the home, Darla felt, would definitely give the game away. And she didn't want that at all. Not yet at least anyway.

As she relaxed in one of the soft armchairs in the Slayer's living room Darla looked on at the dead form of Joyce, wondering as to what to expect. She wondered what type of vampire she would be, there were so many variables. As long as she wasn't as insane as Drusilla or as mopey as William had been when he first turned, Darla was happy. But she was intrigued as to how much of her old life Joyce would keep with her. Oh, all vampires remembered their life as a human of course, all their experiences, but while some immediately drank away any ties to their previous life as Angelus did others preferred to incorporate them- turning them...leaving them be...anything that fitted them or made unlife easier as the case may be.

Darla, as a human, had had no such ties when the Master had come to sire her. She'd been a lonely, bitter prostitute dying in bed of a disease that was a hazard of the work she did. She'd called for the change that night, praying to all the devils and hellgods in the world, so much had she known the Lord had abandoned her. Maybe that was why she always took so well to this lifestyle, just as Angelus had. They had both wanted it, both requested it. Drusilla never had, and neither did Spike come to think of it. Maybe that's why the two of them were also so consumed with feelings. Feelings for one another mostly, but sometimes for others and other things. Yes, maybe that was it. In that case, Joyce was probably going to be of that variable. After all, she definitely hadn't chosen this. In fact, she had stood up to her and tried to fight back to the last. Honorable, yes, but also stupid and now, completely pointless.

She sat up a little straighter in her seat as she saw the body twitch slightly movement, the first signs of awakening. Eventually Joyce stirred completely and her eyes blinked open, confusion and shock filling her expression as she sat up and looked around, drinking in her environment.

“About time,” Darla smiled, “I was afraid you were going to be one of those 'next night' deals. Thank God you weren't. I don't have that kind of patience normally. You would have been waking up on your own”

Joyce could barely hear the words Darla was saying, her sense of hearing was so different from what she was used to. There was perfect silence, an eerie sort of calm that was broken inaudibly by the sound of everyone and everything. She could the slightest movements of the smallest creature. She could sense how many people were walking by the house right now, she could hear all the way from inside how their hot blood was pumping through their bodies, rushing round them, keeping them warm, alive. She looked outside and saw it was pitch black, the middle of the night. She turned to Darla inquisitively.

“How...”

“Long?” Darla finished knowingly, “No more than a few hours. Plenty of time for everything I have planned for tonight”

“Planned?” Joyce frowned.

“Well, tonight I think we'll settle you into your new role. Get you...adjusted,” Darla smiled, “I know how disorientating it can be at first. So many things just rushing through your head,” She laughed, “It's enough to drive you insane”

Joyce knew exactly what Darla was talking about. When she had first woken up her mind was blank, completely devoid of all thoughts except of that which was directly in front of her. Now though, a million things were coming back to her- thoughts, feelings, memories. But most of all the memories. Memories of her entire life. A child, a teenager, a girlfriend, a wife, a mother. Sunnydale. That was the strongest memory. So much had happened in Sunnydale and as she thought over everything her life, her daughters, her friends, her gallery, she found herself feeling slightly sad that she had technically lost all of this. All she had worked to gain was gone in a second. What was more surprising was that the sadness only last a few seconds, before it started to fade.

“I remember...” She whispered, “Everything..."

“Very good,” Darla standing up and smiling with teacher-like approval, “Means I don't have to spend forever and a day explaining it all to you. Now,” She stepped forward offering Joyce, who hadn't gotten up from her seated position on the floor, a hand which the woman gladly took. “Let's see,” She smiled, “First things first- are you hungry?” She asked, knowing full well that she would be. The first hunger was always the strongest. Never having tasted the liquid before ever, but knowing more than anything else in this world that you wanted to. Needing it so desperately you felt you would willing take on a Slayer to get to it. Of course, when you first rose you had no knowledge of what The Slayer was so were unable to make that comparison. Of course Joyce already knew, Darla realized which, she thought with a smile, was going to give every last one of them a distinct advantage. Not only did Joyce know of the Slayer, she actually knew her, was related to her even. Darla believed the woman in front of her was the only vampire to ever know a Slayer so personally. Personally enough to be her downfall. Buffy had been the longest reigning Slayer, the most powerful hadn't she? If what she'd heard over her time at Wolfram and Hart was correct. Well, that was definitely all about to change. She'd see to that. “So...?” She prompted, realizing Joyce had yet to answer her question.

“I feel...” Joyce searched around for the right word, “Empty” And at this Darla nodded knowingly.

“That's it. Well, we'll soon fix that,” She told her, taking her hand and guiding Joyce through the house and out the front door onto the dark streets where the happy meals on legs awaited them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So many roaming the streets in the danger of the shadows. Choosing to remain clueless despite how many weird and frightening occurrences they may have seen during their time in Sunnydale.
“Now,” Darla was saying to Joyce as they walked casually through the crowds to a less busy place of Sunnydale. “For your first, I suggest a nice easy kill, trust me- it's better in the long run,” She told her, “There's nothing worse than that first hunger and still having to fight for your food. You're nowhere near strong enough yet to do it. Well, you could do it, but not comfortably. First priority is just eating someone. Besides,” She added with a sidewards smile, “I'm getting hungry again”

The two peered around, just looking like two women- perhaps mother and daughter- shopping amongst the rest of late night Sunnydale shopaholics. But they weren't looking for bargains or clothes, no they were looking for people. Just two simple people, cluelessly going about their way, no doubt deciding a quiet shortcut would be the easier and faster choice to reach their home, thus inadvertently cutting them off from anyone that could help or save them.

“Aha,” Darla grinned seeing two exact people, a couple- neither any older than eighteen, both heading, hand-in-hand, towards the short cut that consisted of one dark, empty side street followed by one of Sunnydale's many cemeteries. Could the Sunnydale population get any dumber? “Perfect. Come on,” She gestured for Joyce to follow her.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nikki Frost and Daniel Jenson had been dating for no more than four months. They weren't deadly serious about one another, they were both realists enough to acknowledge that theirs wasn't an epic love, but it was what they wanted right now. They made each other laugh, had fun, enjoyed each other's company and did love each other. No matter how much a realist they were, they knew they were in love, if only teenage love. But any love was worth mentioning wasn't it?
They had just finished a date at the Sun Cinema completed by a trip to Ben and Jerry's and were now heading home together, laughing over how absolutely awful the film had turned out to be. They were running late though and Nikki had promised her Mom she would be back home by eleven. As it was it was almost that time now and she was nowhere near home. So Daniel had suggested the short cut.

Maybe Nikki had watched too many horror movies, but she didn't like the look of the shortcut. Too many dark alleys and graves and not enough lights and living people. However, people took the shortcut all the time and she knew there was nothing to be afraid of, she just had to get over her own wiggins.

“Oh and then there was the bit where-” Nikki broke off her little retelling of part of the terrible film as she heard something behind her.

“What's the matter?” Daniel asked, noticing her sudden edginess.

“Nothing,” She told him, “I just thought I heard something.” She shrugged the concern off as paranoia, “Come on. If I don't home soon my Mom's gonna kill me” The couple resumed walking, which was when Nikki heard the noise again, “Okay, I know I heard something that time. Right?”

“Yeah...” Daniel nodded, looking around for the source of the noise, “Definitely something. Alright,” He called out, “Who's there?” He looked around, but no one came into sight and no one answered. “Come on, let's get out of...” He trailed off as he saw his girlfriend was no longer stood beside him. He had only looked away a second and he hadn't heard footsteps...so where had she gone? “Nikki! Nic! Nicola, where are you?”

“Not supposed to tell...” A voice whispered in his ear in a soft sing-song voice and he spun around to see a pretty young blond woman smiling at him. But it wasn't a pleasant smile, there was a distinct nastiness about it. In fact, if he were to use any word to describe it he would call it predatory.

“What do you want?” He demanded, trying to swallow his fear but the beads of sweat trickling down his face gave him away.

“You.” The blond replied simply, her face changing, her features contorted as she took on a demonic visage before his very eyes, her teeth extending into long fangs. A vampire. Before he had time to scream she pulled him towards her roughly, baring his neck, the pink skin gleaming at her enticingly before she sank her teeth in drinking in the hot copper fluid, the taste of it on her tongue arousing and powerful. Everything it should be. She paused, aware that she had a companion, someone new to all of this and she lifted her head to speak to Joyce, to explain to her how exactly everything was to be done just as The Master had explained everything so slowly to her all those many centuries ago. However her bloodied mouth spread in a wide grin as she saw the newborn vampire needed no coaching- perhaps having seen it enough in life to know exactly what was to be done- as she was already drinking of the girl with a speed and ferocity akin to Darla's own. The girl's breathing was slowing, she was almost dead, but Joyce continued to drink. Darla smiled a self-satisfied grin before returning to her own meal.

Once the two had drank all that they could, so the bodies were drained completely, they tossed the corpses aside unceremoniously, the empty shells lying there on the alley floor together, entwined like dead lovers with their eyes froze open wide.

“You're an eager one,” Darla commented, taking in the vampiric face Joyce now wore. It seemed to suit her- a fact Darla delighted in, knowing it would only cause Buffy more pain- and she seemed to require no encouragement when it came to feeding. Darla had worried that she would be one of those like Spike, a vampire that clung to the past subconsciously so had to be gently guided into feeding off of humans, but she had dived right in without hesitation. Her own hunger apparently overriding any fears or concerns she may have had. This one had potential, more than Darla had ever thought possible. What a surprise, and delightful one at that. “Feel better?”

“Much,” Joyce nodded, “Not quite satisfied, but...it'll do”

“Hmm,” Darla smiled, returning to the smooth features of her human face, “I'm afraid that's how it'll be for a while, but don't worry- we'll eventually work past that. Now-”

“How do you do that?” Joyce suddenly asked and Darla looked to see the woman was gently exploring her new features, running her hands over the demonic ridges on her brow.

“How do I do what?”

“Change back,” Joyce explained, “How do I make this go away?”

“Just calm down,” Darla explained, stepping towards her to explain, “Stop focusing on the fact that you want more, that you wish to taste more blood. Think of something else, tell yourself you're full, anything to make yourself stop thinking about it” Darla knew when she had done it, as the kind and gentle face of the living Joyce returned. “Perfect, now as I was saying,” She carried on, linking her arm through the technically-younger-woman's as the two walked out of the alley, “I don't think Buffy should know about this little transformation too soon.”

“You don't?”

“No,” Darla shook her head, “Not until we're definitely ready. Which, the way you're going, shouldn't be too long. I know it's hard- but try and live your life as normal huh? Killing one of Buffy's little friends might give the game away”

Joyce rolled her eyes, “How the hell am I supposed to 'live my life as normal' if I can't go out in daylight, have no reflection and can't even walk around the house with the curtains open without bursting into flame?”

“Figure something out,” Darla shrugged, clearly not really caring, “Keep the curtains closed or something. Stay in bed. Say you're ill. Whatever. Just do it and don't eat any of them.” She saw Joyce's incredulous look and sighed. She was centuries older than this woman, yet she acted like the elder. That's what she got for freezing the woman in a forty-year-old's mentality, while she was stuck in her twenties. “Look, it'll only be a for a few days,” Darla told her, “At least until Drusilla and I find better accommodation. A motel won't do at all. Besides we've eaten all the room service. I'm thinking one of those little homes on the west side. Very shaded, very spacious, and the owner of one is definitely...” She growled something a cross between a vampiric roar and the sound of a woman ready for some serious kink, “...devourable”

“Drusilla?” Joyce questioned, “Isn't that Spike's old girlfriend?”

“I'm impressed,” Darla told her with a smile, “You certainly know more than you let on don't you? Anyway, she's not his anymore, or rather I should say he's no longer hers. Apparently he's into your precious little Buffy.” Darla's eyes sparkled as an idea suddenly came to her, “You know- I think you and Drusilla should meet”

“You think and me the crazy person should meet? Thanks,” She told her sarcastically. Drusilla sounded interesting and all...from a distance. Up close and actually meeting her, well, Joyce found she really couldn't be bothered.

“Well, you'll have to sometime, and no time like the present,” Darla said, using their linked arms to begin to direct Joyce towards the motel she and Drusilla were presently living in for the time being.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Though the motel car park was full of vehicles, the motel itself was deathly quiet. Walking into the darkened foyer, Joyce realized why. The receptionist was slumped over her desk, pale with two small neck wounds. Clearly dead. Same for the janitor on the floor further along the wall. Joyce glanced over at them in disinterest, peering on past them for something more eye catching. Yet, there was nothing. Darla had been right when she claimed the place to not be much.
“Next floor,” Darla told her, stepping casually over the janitor, “I never sleep on the ground floor. Too many bad barn experiences,” She explained.

“Barn experiences?” Joyce questioned, “...that were bad?”

“Vampire hunters,” Darla sighed, “Setting fire to the place, to us...it's a whole big thing” She continued up the stairs and the two women passed more and more dead bodies all drained by either Darla or Drusilla and in some cases both. The sight of them all though was making Joyce hungry to the point of distraction and they truly hadn't saved anyone for left-overs.

“Drusilla!” Darla called out in a slightly sing-song voice, “We're back!”

“We?” Drusilla questioned, “Has Grandmummy brought a present?”

“Mm...yeah sure...” Darla answered distractedly, not really sure how to answer a question like that.

“Ooh, not a present,” Drusilla said, shaking her head as her dark eyes fell on Joyce, “Not a present. A special treat here and they'll all be dancing when she comes to town”

“Thank you...” Joyce said semi-sarcastically wondering what the hell the woman was on about.

“Grandmummy doesn't see the potential here...shadows flying around your head like bats...” Drusilla started to circle around Joyce as though viewing the shadows she spoke of from every angle. “You don't see them yet though, no...you don't do you?” Drusilla seemed to ask Joyce as she eency-weency-spidered up the woman's shoulder with her fingers, along her neck, about to work their way to on top of her head when Joyce decided she could only take so much insanity and she slapped the hand away, but rather than get angry or offended by the action Drusilla only grinned, looking at Joyce knowingly. “Yes...” She said thoughtfully as though agreeing with someone neither Joyce nor Darla could hear, “It's all just beginning isn't it...” She giggled girlishly, turning to Darla, “And you don't know what you've done!” She told her

“What are you on about Drusilla?” Darla asked impatiently, whereas Joyce was listening intently, trying to decipher what exactly Dru was talking about, particularly as she seemed to be the subject of her ramblings.

“But she's not complete yet,” Drusilla merely said in reply, speaking sadly with her head down, “No...she's like a rose without her thorns,” The sad expression faded as her vampiric face came to the fore and she was grinning, “But she will...she's yet to...but she will...then it'll really begin...” She looked over at Joyce with a smile that seemed to say no matter how crazy she may seem she knew everything there was to know, even things not worth knowing but more importantly she knew of things that needed knowing and others wished they did. Her smile faded though as she took in Joyce's image properly for the first time. “What are you wearing?” She asked, wrinkling her nose in distaste and as she said it Drusilla sounding entirely insane and coherent as though Joyce's attire had horrified her back to her senses.

Feeling completely self conscious, Joyce looked down at the outfit she had died in and grimaced as she realized Darla couldn't have chosen to turn her on a worst fashion day. She used to wear colors, she remembered colors. In fact only yesterday she had been wearing a shirt that was a fantastically bold blue. Today though it was plain brown trousers and a beige long sleeve top. She'd never felt more boring in her life.

“Dru's right,” Darla nodded, “You definitely need a new wardrobe”

Joyce couldn't agree more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Not much of a fight,” Joyce commented with a tone of disappointment, tossing the last shopkeeper aside after draining him completely and she looked over to see Drusilla just finishing her second also while Darla had already moved on to strolling around the shop, admiring the items on show. “The others always put up a fight”

“Others?” Darla asked with an eyebrow raised.

“Buffy's friends- Xander, Willow, Giles...they all seemed to really fight back. They're merely human but no vampire was able to simple have them” Joyce explained and Darla nodded in understanding.

“Ah yes, well her Watcher no doubt got some minimal training at wherever it is those morons study and probably got a little experience fighting. As for the others...spending so much time with the Slayer has influenced them. It's good that you think that an average human's response,” She told her, “Means you're ready for most. Now, what'll you have?” She gestured to the entire range of clothes with a widespread arm.

“Anything that involves skirts and isn't brown...” Joyce replied, looking down at her current attire before moving onto the new.

“My type of girl” Darla said with approval, “Maybe bold blouses, low cuts. We want to show off, but there's no harm in being classy about it. And if you do go for any trousers, stick with jeans variants, trust me.” Her eyes landed on a pair of low cut black jeans, “Oh, but these are mine” She informed her, taking them off the rack. “Now, not that I don't totally approve of those items,” Darla said, seeing the short skirts- some colorful and mini, others bold and just above the knee and others black and leather-and bold, bright, flatteringly low cut tops being picked out by the quickly adjusting vampire, “But I advise you get a few items that are a little less daring..maybe only slightly more so than your current outfit.”

“Why?” Joyce asked, clearly not paying very much attention as she continued to breeze through the racks of clothes whilst trying to ignore Drusilla dancing around her. “Would you stop that?” She finally demanded of the unstable woman and Dru cowed, but with a smile on her face showing she wasn't really frightened by the snap in tone but rather thrilled.

“Because we're trying to keep this new identity of yours secret for as long as reasonable,” Darla explained, “No point giving the game away too soon. I say the element of surprise is the best way to destroy Buffy...and destroy her I will...” She smiled a self-satisfied smile at the mere prospect alone. However, the smile immediately faded when she saw the unsure expression Joyce wore at the mention of killing her daughter and Darla rolled her eyes in utter boredom and exasperation, “Don't tell me you're like 'dear William'” She said, putting on a pompous British accent for the name, before speaking in a mocking tone a mocking hand to her heart which had no beat, “'Feelings even without a soul'?”

At the thought of this, Joyce immediately shook her head.

“No,” She replied, “That's not it. It's just...I feel connected to Buffy. More than just as the Slayer,” She hurried to add as she saw both Darla and Drusilla begin to speak, “But also...as my daughter. At the same time that I want her dead and I couldn't care less what you did with her Darla, I also want to protect her...but I don't want to care or look after her,” Joyce frowned, “I'm not sure I'm making any sense here”

“No...” Drusilla said softly, “You're speaking perfect sense. Primal instinct in motherhood, there is...and vampires are the most primal thing of all.” Drusilla began to dance to music neither of the other two could here, “Bring the new together and their swishing and dancing and-” She stopped dancing abruptly to clap her hands together, “And one becomes stronger than it was. It grows. Oooooh,” Drusilla grinned, bouncing on the balls of her feet playfully, “But which one is it going to be...or is Grandmummy taking away a task that is rightfully yours...?”

“Isn't that interesting?” Darla commented lightly, “Ah well, no matter. As long as you want her dead still I don't care about any of your other 'feelings'.”

“You sure you don't care about them?” Joyce asked, wearing a knowing smile of her own.

“Yes, I'm sure...unless you have something planned you don't quite wish to let me in on...”

“No, not at all,” Joyce told her, resuming her clothes shopping, But that was a lie, she did have a plan. Oh she agreed with Darla sure enough, Buffy must die if only for her own survival and nothing else, but Drusilla was also right about her feelings of motherhood being even stronger. And that meant that she wasn't going to let Darla kill her. No, if Buffy was going to die, and Joyce had no doubt that she was, then it would be she that would kill her. It was her right and in some weird, twisted unexplainable way she felt it was owed to Buffy; if her Mother was turned then it was that Mother that would end her.

“Oooh...” Drusilla grinned, “There's going to be a duel. Mummy and Daughter go head to head...fight to death...dancing with death...dancing...”

“You know,” Joyce spoke, if only to distract from Drusilla's not-so-mad ramblings, “I'm not sure I can keep pretense up in that house for so long with them all round me. All fighting the good fight, being so very saintly about everything. It's enough to make me want to...”

“Kill them all?” Darla filled in correctly and Joyce nodded in agreement, “Well, no worries- that will come soon enough. No more than a day or so till when you can get out of there and away from them. I promise. And then we'll have them all”

Palabra- Thank you, glad you like it so far (At least I know I'm doing something right! Haha)
Wanabee-Slayer- Afraid no Dander per se in this story, but you know feel free to interpret character interaction as you wish, hehe.

Next Chapter a week after as promised:

Chapter Three: Let the Plum Ripen

The weekend that Buffy and Dawn were remaining at their Father's eventually and inevitably came to an end which unfortunately put an end to Joyce's fun and freedom of being able to go out and hunt whenever she so wished. She now felt she had a dim, paler version of what all the vampires in Sunnydale felt every time her daughter returned to Sunnydale. Course, back then Joyce, being alive and human, had been as relieved as everyone else. Now though...it was just an inconvenience.

For, just as she had guessed before she died, the moment Buffy returned, all of her friends started coming by the house a lot more often, most annoyingly staying over for visits during the night. Luckily though with their classes at college for Willow, Tara and Buffy and jobs for Xander, Anya and Rupert most of the time they were far too busy to spend any time at the house during the day and since Dawn was at school throughout the time the sun was up in the sky thus preventing Joyce from going anywhere, she was able to remain in the darkened part of the house without being asked any questions. The concept of taking Dawn to school Monday morning, that very morning in fact, had been a frightening one. Joyce could think of no conceivable way of explaining how she couldn't drive her youngest daughter to school when the car keys were right in front of her and the car was parked in the drive, patiently waiting for them to climb in. Eventually Joyce had told Dawn that she was old enough now to start going with her friends to school, adding that a walk would do her good along with the fresh air and she had shoved her in the direction of the front door, staying well out of the way of the deadly bright shaft of sunlight that would pour through the moment Dawn went to step outside.

She had nearly slipped up again barely half an hour ago. The entire group were over at the house, eating her food, sitting on her seats and enjoying the space in her living room for no other reason more important than they wanted to have a relaxing night together, just bonding and strengthening the ties of friendship. There wasn't even a looming apocalypse and they were still spending all of their time here. Didn't they have freaking homes to go to for crying out loud?

Fortunately though, Joyce had only just recently spoken to Darla and an acceptable place to live had been chosen and the owners eaten by all three of them. It had been a family so that ensured the house was big enough for them. The wife had been a simpering idiot who hadn't even fought back when Joyce had bit into her and it was as she had drained her that she had realized she just wasn't getting the thrill out of it that the other two were. Drusilla was positively euphoric after her human and upon seeing this, Joyce couldn't help but wonder whether she should have chosen to drink the child instead, but she had presumed less blood so less filling, less...satisfying but apparently that wasn't the case at all. Maybe the lack of thrill though lay in the fact that she needed a challenge, someone who would fight back, who would undoubtedly lose for sure but Joyce would feel as though she'd earned the copper liquid that ran down and burned her throat in a way in which nothing else ever had.

So, this was her last night living in the home that she had undoubtedly made her own ever since she and Buffy (and later Dawn) had moved to Sunnydale five years ago. In a way she felt she shouldn't be the one to leave, Buffy and Dawn were. This was her home and she had as much right to it as anyone else. But Darla had a strict rule about not going after the Slayer or any of her associates yet, not 'till the time was right'. Well, Joyce was completely fed up of waiting for the right time. It felt as though it would never come. And the entire gang being here was driving them insane.

The entire group of them, and save for Rupert, all of them were so much younger than she. Barely twenty and it made their blood youthful, hotter than others, pumping faster than other victims and it was driving Joyce into a frenzy. They were all together in one room, tightly packed like sheep, lambs for the slaughter even, the lack of room between each them causing so much body heat that Joyce could taste it in the air. Their heartbeats were in sync with one another's. One loud thump after another, Joyce could hear each and every one and her own dead heart seemed to leap with theirs at the sound of it. She wanted them all, wanted to devour every last one, taste of them, but she was forbidden that fruit and she felt it was destroying her, torturing the demon inside.

Damn, she needed something to distract her. Something to entertain. To sate the urges all of this was creating. Their were other urges of course. Her thoughts drifted to the new clothes lying waiting for her upstairs. The thigh-length black skirt and the low-cut fitted red blouse would be just perfect right now. The colors seemed to suit how she felt this minute and the outfit would ensure the boys would be sent into a frenzy. Hell, why stop there? Willow and Tara were gay weren't they and Joyce was absolutely positive Anya wasn't conservative. Decision made she got up from where she had been hiding out in the kitchen and headed upstairs.

Passing Dawn's room where she knew the girl was asleep she thought back on how she had almost slipped up before. Dawn when she had seen Buffy and her friends gathered in the living room had asked her Mother if it was okay for her to stay up late just once on a school night and 'hang with the Scoobies'. Joyce, not really caring and too busy trying not to focus on how gradually more hungry she was becoming, had merely replied casually 'sure, whatever'. She had been met with deathly silence as the slayer and her friends had fell silent at this shocking, out of character reply and Joyce had been stumped, unable to come up with an excuse for replying to Dawn like that. Rupert, thankfully had filled in a brilliant excuse for her as he had asked 'Joyce, were you actually listening just then?' she had smiled a smile that was so familiar to them all. The half-apologetic, half-embarrassed smile that she knew summed up all she had been in life, and she had nodded said 'yes, sorry, I was thinking of other things' and like a robot relaying out information it had been programmed to say she had told Dawn no and ordered her to go to her room as it was past her bed time.

Having now changed Joyce examined herself, trying to look down at the outfit but now unable to see her own reflection she sighed in annoyance as she realized she would never really know what the outfit looked like. However, she did decide that Darla was right and short skirts were too obvious and clearly showed something was changed, something wasn't right. She wanted to throw them, not alert them to what happened. Sadly and reluctantly she slid off the skirt and instead reached for the leather jeans Darla had advised her to have. At first she had been reluctant, remembering how she never wore leather in life, ever, but Darla had insisted it was completely and totally her. The new her. Trusting Darla's opinion entirely- she knew what she was talking about when it came to clothes she had discovered in a small amount of time- Joyce slipped on the item and reflection or no reflection she knew with the red shirt the ensemble was complete. Now...for make-up. At least that had never been drab. Even Faith had complimented her selection of lipsticks. But how to do it without an image to refer to...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“So what are you all doing?” Joyce asked after slinking her way downstairs, unnoticed, “Nothing dangerous I hope,” She added with a smile as they all turned to look at her. She worked hard to prevent her grin from becoming one of self-satisfaction as she caught a glimpse of both Rupert and Xander's reactions. Smirking at Tara and Willow both looking down at their knees, Joyce continued on into the living room, slipping into the only seating space remaining. The arm of the sofa on the side of which Rupert was sat. She felt his heartbeat race so much faster the moment she settled next to him, leaning toward him ever so lighter and his temperature rose with his heart to intoxicating heights.

“No, n-n-nothing dangerous,” Buffy stuttered, “Mom, what are you wearing? It's leather and red...and there's leather...and red...”

“Oh, I am such a klutz,” Joyce laughed, the lie coming as easily as the light chuckle, “I erm spilled some coffee on my other clothes a minute ago so I had to change”

“And that's what you threw on?” Buffy asked in horrified disbelief

“First thing that came to hand,” Joyce smiled back easily, pretending to steady herself on her seat by resting her arm on the back of the sofa, pressing her just that little bit closer to Rupert. She was slightly concerned about his heartbeat now, it was racing inhumanly fast of that she was sure. She was concerned because she didn't want to lose him before she'd had time to play. “I hope my daughter isn't boring you with popular culture Rupert,” She smiled, almost whispering in his ear and she heard him gulp.

“N-no, not, ah, n-n-not at all Joyce” He assured and even he couldn't hide the way he was eying her appreciatively. Alive her would have adored the attentions of Rupert Giles. She'd always wanted him, but felt too silly to admit to it and too afraid of her daughter to make a move on it and also too afraid of rejection- what if he hadn't felt the same way? Beyond the band candy he'd never given any inclination, but she certainly couldn't deny it now as she noted his dilated pupils, blushing skin tone, raised eyebrows in keen interest and well...other raised things also. However as she watched him quickly tear his eyes away from her, ashamed at the attention he was paying Joyce, she realized that this wasn't the man she wanted anymore. Oh he was desirable, no doubt about that- a woman dead or alive would have to be blind or stupid not to realize that- but she didn't desire Rupert any longer. He was the man who invited you over for tea and his idea of wooing was discussing art history with her. Oh how that would have swept her off her feet only a few days ago. Now though, now she didn't wish to have Rupert, no, she wanted Ripper. She'd heard so much about this persona, but hearing and experiencing were so very different things and how she longed to experience it. Now wasn't the time though. If she were to get Ripper to come out and play she'd have to play it carefully, seductively and slowly and when the two of them were entirely alone, preferably at his own flat where she knew the children no longer visited. Not now though, now was not the place and so Ripper would have to wait. She reached back, sitting up straight and the man seemed to visibly sigh with relief as distance was put between himself and her cleavage. He put his hands folded in his lap so the others would not be able to see clear evidence that he was having...sensations for Buffy's Mother.

So she had to leave Rupert alone for now, just for now though, but still it spoiled half her fun. Looking opposite her though where she saw Xander and Anya were sat she saw that there was indeed still enjoyment to be had Perhaps more so in this case. Rupert was a no go presently, but Xander...Xander she could have fun with.

“Do any of you wish to have something to drink?” Joyce asked them all, “Your glasses are all empty almost”

“I wouldn't say no,” Willow grinned, holding up her glass for Joyce to take.

“I could make you some hot chocolate perhaps?” She suggested, marveling at how able she was to sound like her old self despite the fact that making cocoa was no where on her kitchen agenda for that night. There was an eager consensus of yes in answer to her suggestion and she got up to head into the kitchen and do the honors. It was then that she turned to Xander with a small smile.

“Xander?”

“Yes, what Joyce?” He asked, trying to act completely casual as though the image in front of him wasn't effecting him in the slightest. 'He was completely immune'.

“Be my kitchen buddy again?” She asked, using a phrase they had both previously coined for just the two of them, “Help me out”

“Erm yeah...” Xander gulped, “Sure...”

Joyce always knew he had a crush on her. What boy didn't get a crush on a older woman at some point in their lives? It was flattering really, or at least she had thought it flattering when she first figured it out. It had been just after Buffy had run away from Sunnydale, after killing Angel and saving the world again. Xander had been the one to explain everything, to make sure she was okay, to sympathize with her, talk to her. That was when she had seen the crush developing. But Xander was too much of a heart-of-gold to ever allow the crush to be creepy or twisted. When Xander crushed on anyone, such as when he had crushed on Buffy in his earlier years of high school it wasn't so much lust like most other's crushes, although lust was definitely there, but with Xander it was mostly admiration for the woman. And Joyce had felt understandably flattered that he had admired her, found her attractive.

Now though, she saw it as an opportunity for some fun. Flashing him a smile, seeing the nervous look on his face as he stood straight in the middle of the kitchen not knowing what to do with himself, she turned back to the cupboard to retrieve the mugs and hot chocolate. It was all continuous she supposed, as she made the drinks, deliberately not speaking a word to the boy, letting him stew. Xander had always been attracted to Buffy but she never returned his affections and just as that began to fade and Joyce had begun receiving the quick glances and guilt filled looks, Dawn had started crushing on Xander. It was all a continuous loop, all, ironically, involving all three Summers women.

“Oh darn,” She half-cursed, accidentally on purpose spilling some hot chocolate onto the kitchen floor. She feigned indecision and being overwhelmed before turning to Xander, “Xander, would you mind mopping that up if it's not too much to ask”

“Mopping?” He questioned nervously, noting the spill was directly by her bare feet.

“Yes,” She nodded, “With a towel” She pointed out the item and he nodded, shaking slightly with nerves as he grabbed the cloth and knelt on the floor, mopping up the liquid. Joyce made no effort to move away so he was forced to kneel incredibly close to her legs and when he stood up straight she almost laughed at the red embarrassment of his cheeks as he brushed her entire body by accidently on his way back up as he stood up too close to her.

“S-Sorry,” He immediately apologized before she could say anything.

“It's perfectly alright Xander,” She assured him with a warm smile, “Now...” She said softly, speaking to him mouth-to-mouth dangerously close and she found his racing heartbeat exhilarating, making her want to claim him. “I have something to ask you...” She whispered, keeping the closeness between them and he gulped with nerves though she noticed he didn't pull away.

“And what would that b-be-e?” He asked.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Anya,” Xander said abruptly, coming back into the living room looking very much like a startled fawn, “It's late. We need to go”

“We do, but it's only ten o clock...” Anya pointed out, glancing over at the gold and white clock on the mantelpiece.

“Yes, but we need to go now” He insisted, grabbing her hand and pulling her out of her chair, “See the rest of you tomorrow, bye!” He waved before any of them could question his odd change in behavior and he quickly opened the door and he and Anya left the house before she could so much as way goodbye to the others.

Joyce watched the entire scene from the kitchen with amusement. She wasn't concerned about Xander. He wasn't going to give her away, not that he knew what she was, but rather he certainly wasn't going to give away anything that might suggest she was such a creature as a vampire. He wasn't ever going to tell anyone what happened in the kitchen, he was in too much shock himself she supposed while she...was no longer bored. Though, she realized, that probably wouldn't last long. She needed to get out now, before she went back on what they had planned and had her very own massacre right here and now and besides, she would probably end up dust if she tried it.

“Right,” She announced walking back into the living room, “I erm, some friends from work just called asking if I was free” She told them, silently reminding herself to play it down, play it as little-miss-nice, “A Mom's Night Out kinda thing. So I'll be...back later” She went to leave.

“Guess I'm looking after Dawn then?” Buffy asked, stopping Joyce in her tracks and she cursed, realizing she should have thought of that. What a silly, small thing to slip up on.

“Oh would you?” She smiled gratefully, “Thank you. Well, I'll see you all around. Bye Rupert...” She added for his benefit giving him a winning smile and brushing her cold fingers along the hot skin of his arm where he had rolled up his sleeves, doing so as though the contact may have been accidental but she saw in his expression that he knew on some level that it wasn't. With a sly smile she left, leaving the group entirely puzzled but thankfully still clueless.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Walking down the street, high heels clicking, Joyce enjoyed the darkness enveloping her save for the occasional street light giving off a small halo of golden light. She had never been comfortable in the night time before, not even in her own home except when Buffy was with her and now she felt at home in it. And that feeling was more freeing than anything else.

Suddenly her vampire heightened hearing picked up on something. The sound of footsteps that weren't her own. They were slightly heavier, shuffling, a man's step and it didn't match her own, but she could tell it was trying to. Whoever this person was, they were trying to sneak up on her. Possibly planning to mug her. Well, they were certainly in for a big surprise. She carried on walking, picking up her pace, playing the frightened woman as she hurried along the paved streets and the faster she walked, the more she heard her follower pick up his pace also. Just as she heard the person coming up right behind her, so close he could grab her purse if she were carrying one, she spun around with supernatural quickness grabbing the man around the neck in a vice like grip, a move Darla had taught her with glee, and the now-victim choked in surprise, but Joyce was just as shocked as she saw she recognized her intended victim and in fact this disqualified him as a victim at all.

“Spike,” She gasped, yet still not letting go of his neck.

“Whoa,” He choked in the grip, “What are you doing? Wait, how are you doing this? Jesus, your hands are cold- you should be inside”

“Doesn't matter,” She shook the question aside, before immediately asking her own, “Why were you following me?” She released her grip and dropped her hands to her side.

“I'll have you know...thought you were Anya from behind actually. Thought I'd give her a scare,” He admitted with a grin as he reached into his pocket for a cigarette before getting out his silver and black lighter also, “Always good for a laugh. But yeah, thought you were her,” He lit up, before putting the lighter back in his pocket and taking a drag, “You got pretty similar hair right now, you're wearing her type of clothes. Plus,” He added, leaning back against the nearby brick wall casually as he continued to talk, “You smell like Xander. But I supposed if I'd bothered to check properly I'd smell...” Spike trailed off as he went through the scents around Joyce, discarding Xander's, the Watcher's to find...no,that couldn't be right. Sure he could smell Joyce- she was kind of earthy with a mixture of her own perfume, he always knew that smell almost as well as he knew Buffy's, but it wasn't quite right this time. It was as though the smell had lost some of it'd edge, some of it's qualities and picked up new, more lifeless smelling ones. Which was when, with a saddened heart, he began to realize, “Hang on...” He quit searching smells and instead listened, listened for the heartbeat he knew should be there and yet, sadly he didn't find it, “Oh god Joyce you don't have...”

“A heartbeat?” She finished lightly, “Haven't for quite a few days now”

“No, Joyce,” He shook his head sadly, “No...not you. God,I'm so sorry this happened to you...”

“Why?” Joyce asked bluntly with a frown, wondering what on earth he was on about, “I'll never get old, no conscience weighing me down, no more worries of this,” She tapped her head lightly with her forefinger, “going wrong again. All works out great for me,” She told him, before spinning on her heel and continuing on her brisk walk down the street towards the center of town where there were more people to be found. She thought the conversation over as she had given a tone of finality to her statement, but Spike gave a little burst of speed to catch up with her and started striding along beside her, carrying on their little talk.

“It's not as good as it sounds you know,” He told her, “Sure, first it's all blood and easy living, but then things start to get complicated love” In response to this Joyce just dramatically rolled her eyes, clearly already bored with what he was saying as she came to an abrupt halt so she could talk to him face to face.

“Darla said you were like this,” She told him and his eyes widened as he recognized the name and it all came together.

“Darla told you...” He sighed, “She's your sire isn't she? She's the one who turned you. I'll bloody stake her”

Joyce didn't reply, merely sighed in annoyance before carrying on walking

“Joyce,” Spike followed on after her, not one to give up easily, “Anyone but her as a vamp buddy, anyone. She's a bloody bitch. Look,” He sighed and shifted on his feet uncomfortably, clearly feeling awkward over what he was about to say, “Come stay with me, right? You might as well, you're stuck like this and it'll be a lot more fun passing time with me than the Blond Bitch from Beyond. Plus,” He added, “I'm a lot hotter than Darla if that'll swing it”

“Please,” Joyce said sarcastically, looking at him with a look of such disdain it was as if she considered him not even worth the time of night, “Stay with you? In a crypt watching Passions as you mope over my daughter? Sorry, but there are a lot more interesting things to do in this world” And with that she walked on again. She was getting extremely tired of Spike now and his lectures weren't helping any. She was trying to find something to eat here and he just kept following her. It didn't help that some of what he was saying was getting to her. How was that even possible? Vampires didn't have conscience or second-thoughts. Being a vampire was what finally made everything black and white, but talking to Spike was making her think things over and she didn't want that. She'd lived most of her life moving through shades of gray and she wasn't going to go back to that. Ever.

For a moment Spike looked stunned by her harsh words, as though they really hurt him, before he gathered his bearings and headed after once again. He really didn't give up easily. She decided to pay him no attention, figuring that might be the only way to make him leave, and instead started peering through the crowds they had now reached for someone to grab her attention. Eventually she saw an appealing looking couple. Vulnerable, in love, not with anyone else and definitely biteable. Perfect. She headed in their direction.

“You know I used to like you Joyce,” Spike finally replied in response to her harsh words as he walked along side her as she headed for the couple, but just as she got close enough to reach and grab them, dragging them off out of sight, Spike stepped directly in front of her forcing her to stop walking and the meals got away. She glared at him.

“Would you go away?” She demanded of him, before turning in another direction.

“No,” He replied, walking beside, “Yeah, I used to like you. You were the only decent one of that bloody group”

“The only one that wasn't a selfish little thing you mean?” She translated as she finally came to a voluntary halt and rested against a nearby wall, taking in her surroundings casually as she was forced to listen to Spike talk her head off.

“Well, yeah, there's that,” Spike admitted, “I've wished a lot of things on Buffy. Some would have brought her pain, others, funnily enough, would have brought us together, but I never wished for this Joyce. I never wanted this to happen to you”

“A lot of things happen in this world that we don't want to,” Joyce replied wisely and Spike couldn't help but agree, “Just gotta roll with the times,” She continued, sounding, to Spike's interested surprise, a little nostalgic herself as though everything wasn't as perfectly evil and simple as she had initially made it out to be, “Oh and by the way. It's not just Darla” She told him, “There's another with...hmm...what is her name?” Joyce feigned forgetfulness as she built up to announcing what other vampire she had been meeting with, “I think you might know her...Drusilla is it?”

“Drusilla,” Spike now looked really upset, as though this were one thing too much, “You're hanging out with bloody Dru? Look, Joyce, vamp or not you can't go stay with both of them. It's drive you mad- you'll end up like Dru if you're not bleedin' careful.”

“Yeah, she is completely crackers,” Joyce agreed, before adding with a defiant smile, “But it helps break up the day”

Spike couldn't help but smile at that, knowing exactly what Joyce was talking about. No matter how much Drusilla could piss you off with her insane ramblings that only ever seemed to make perfect sense to her, she definitely made any factor of an unlife less boring. It did break up the day, Joyce was right. Spike's smile of nostalgia suddenly faded when he remembered who he was discussing this with. It wasn't right, none of this was and as he looked at Joyce for a brief moment he understood why this was upsetting him so much. He had liked Joyce, liked her a lot, no matter what he was, she had always been motherly towards him, took care of him when he was broke up over Dru and that was exactly why he was so upset. It was like what happened to his Mum, what he had done to his Mum all those decades ago. Spike was harshly and abruptly brought out of his reverie as suddenly, seemingly without even looking at the person, Joyce reached out a hand to tug a lonely girl into the alley with them, breaking her neck swiftly as she did, so there were no inconvenient shouts or struggles. He can only watch as though a young child seeing his Mom kill a loved one as Joyce vamped out effortlessly and went to drink. She paused a moment before she did so, reverting to her human visage as she turned to look at him with a kind expression Joyce had worn so often in life and was wonderfully familiar to Spike and he was able, for one small moment, to pretend that none of this had happened.

“Are you going to tell Buffy?” She asked him, earnestly asking for an honest answer, “She doesn't know you see...and I understand if you do”

It sounded so much like Joyce, human Joyce, as though she were merely asking Spike not to tell Buffy she had been on a date. Asking him to hide from her daughters that their Mom had a life. Instead she was asking him to hide from them the fact that their Mother no longer had a life, that she was dead. Worse, a vampire; the very thing the eldest of the daughters was born to kill.

“I guess you don't want her to know, not yet anyway” Spike acknowledged with a reluctant sigh, seemingly already giving in to the implied request and Joyce shook her head in answer to his question. He sighed in resignation, “You won't be able to keep it secret much longer you know,” He told her, “But either way, I won't say out. But just as a favor to you mind, not for Darla or anything. Just because I liked you,” He smiled at her warmly and it made her annoyingly uncomfortable, “You were always a decent woman Joyce; there with a cup of cocoa, little marshmallows and a kind word and just in case you need it...I'm there with that for you in return. Just in case, mind” He told her kindly, before turning away from her and walking back the way they had come without saying another word, leaving Joyce stood there in the alley holding onto the dead girl, feeling slightly shook up by how much his warming speech had actually reached her. That she was actually touched by it frustrated her and worried her. Watching Spike's retreating figure, she shook her head of these thoughts, bringing on the face of the vampire before drinking of the woman to the point of relieving distraction.

Poor Joyce! Love the Spike/Joyce interaction. And, yeah, you know me... hoping Ripper does come out to play before this is all said and done.

I am confused about why Spike doesn't tell Buffy. She really needs to know. Joyce could sneak attack any of her friends and they'd never even suspect. Is this before or after the Glory torture incident? Before, I'd buy his silence as a possibility. After, not so much.

Glad you liked the Spike/Joyce stuff- Spike comes back into it again this chapter. And this story without Ripper would be like Christmas without the family drunk- incomplete.
And as for Spike not telling Buffy this is set just after Crush, so it is before the Glory Torture Incident and just after Buffy has de-invited him from the house and told him to stay the hell away from her and her family. So maybe he's a little sore. Plus, technically he still is soulless so is prone to bad things still, but in a later chapter our Blondie Bear has le thoughts de seconde.
Writing this was a nice distraction from the dangerously unhealthy muchies I've been having this past week or so. End of the first trimester seems to mean bye-bye illness, hello chocolate.

Chapter Four: Missed Opportunities

“The stars are dancing and there's going to be a tea party...everyone's invited and the ants have come to play”

“Sure they have,” Darla replied almost robotically as she watched Drusilla swirl around in a circle, her long velvet skirt trailing after her, from where she lazed around on the beautiful suede sofa the previous owners of the house had bought. The sound of the front door opening gave Darla a welcome release from the crazy antics of Drusilla which had been driving her to the point of her insanity as she had forced to listen, the daylight and the sun keeping her locked inside. She went out hunting for a brief period before but Drusilla had joined her which put an end to the concept of any form of a break from her and then she had to return to wait for Joyce's arrival, who was supposed to be abandoning her old home, leaving that tie to her life behind. Darla looked forward to the two hunting together. At least with Joyce she could have a decent conversation. The sound of the door opening revealed that very woman to walk into the house.

“Well, that's it. Left. Gone. Vacated.” Joyce announced, joining them in what passed for a living room, but judging for the status of the family the adults had most likely referred to it as a parlor or seating room. There was also a sunroom which looked wonderfully elegant, but it wasn't as though any of the three of them were ever going to use it, except maybe Drusilla who enjoyed dancing underneath the glass windows was night had fallen. “Next thing they'll be worrying over why I haven't come back. They'll probably assume I stayed over at a friends...which gives us one more day of no questions asked”

“So you left with ease?” Darla asked, “No...little hitches?”

“No,” Joyce shook her head, dropping into an armchair nonchalantly, slouching with her legs crossed as she looked around the house in distaste. The walls were all white. She'd always hated all white walls. You should at least break it up with another color. Besides white also encouraged you to draw on it, it was a blank canvas waiting to be bled upon. “I did have some fun with them before I left though”

“I can see that,” Darla smiled, noting the outfit the woman wore.

“Rupert intrigued me...” She told her, though she seemed to be more voicing her own thoughts aloud rather than talking to Darla directly or purposely.

“He did?” Darla asked, but seemingly only out of a chance to promote conversation rather than interest as her tone was the epitome of boredom. Drusilla, however, was positively giddy at what Joyce was saying.

“Ooooh!” She grinned excitedly and childishly, “You like him you do...you want him to be yours...”

“No,” Joyce shook her head thoughtfully, “I used to...but not anymore. I don't want Rupert Giles” She smiled, not only from the thought of Ripper but at the memory of the brief glimpse she had had of that darker nature when they had both been high on Band Candy. That memory always made her smile. That certain smile every woman wore when they'd had a really good lay. It was a smile of self-satisfaction and it was that grin she wore now, “I want Ripper”

“Ripper?” Darla raised an eyebrow, “And who's that?”

“It's Rupert,” Joyce explained simply, “Just a dark side of him he never lets out...he had a very dark past apparently...and that's what I want to see. I want Ripper, not Rupert.” Ripper would be harder to claim, to dominate. With him she would have to really fight for that right of dominance and that was what appealed to her more than anything, “How do I do that?” She asked the other two, “Make Ripper come out to play?”

“Turning him would bring out the beast...” Drusilla almost whispered with a predatory gleam in her eyes as she slipped off her seat on the chair and started crawling along the floor on her hands and knees slowly as she spoke, “Make it roar...and hunt...and rule...”

“How do I do that though?” Joyce asked. The idea definitely appealed to her, more than appealed to her but she had no idea how to...sire someone? Was that even the word? “Turn him?”

“You don't,” Darla replied firmly, “You don't turn him. That would not be a good idea, trust me.”

“Why not?” Joyce pouted, wondering why the fellow vampire was determined to spoil her fun here.

“Not all take as well to our world as you or I did,” Darla explained, “He'd fight against it, it'd go wrong. He's too...good.”

“Well, I wasn't exactly a rebel,” Joyce pointed out and Darla smiled.

“Yes, well you were a pleasant surprise,” She told her, “Besides he'd never be yours Joyce. Never. Nothing in our world ever belongs to anyone. You can take anything you want, but it will never be yours,” She informed her pointedly, before becoming contemplative and thoughtful, “Of course you could fight him for dominance but it'd be a constant battle and a rather pointless one I might add”

“Fate's players like tin soldiers all in a row and Grandmummy wants to knock them down”

“I told you to stop calling me that,” Darla reminded the crazed vampire, “And what the hell are you on about?”

“Keep her away from the soldiers, keep away. Stand straight to attention 'cause no...” Drusilla shook her head with a grin as from kneeling position on the floor she looked from Darla to Joyce, who coincidentally were sat in almost identical positions save for the fact Darla reclined on a sofa while Joyce was in one of the larger armchairs, “Stepping on shadows you want to keep to yourself...but you can't stop the soldiers marching,” Drusilla started to giggle insanely as she rolled on her back and began to laugh out loud as she rolled on her back, “It's all going to march together and you can't stop it...but you don't know that...” She continued to laugh.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spike had got himself a very nice set-up he decided. When he had first arrived in Sunnydale, with a weak Drusilla on his arm, he had intent, he had had plans. Sunnydale was going to burn and he and Drusilla were going to rule the Underworld with the Hellmouth as their throne. But then things had begun to change, Angelus had come back and things had reverted to how they had been back at the end of the nineteenth century, only without any Darla to distract Angelus from his attentions to Dru and with Spike trapped in a wheelchair there wasn't much he could about it. That's when he had paired up with Buffy against peaches. That, in reflection, had been his first mistake. If hadn't worked together with Buffy, Drusilla wouldn't have left him, he wouldn't have returned to Sunnydale, ended up with Harmony, returned to Sunnydale again to have a chip put in his brain, forced to stay in town only to fall in love with the very thing he hated. So really, he had only himself to blame. But, that thought process didn't sit too well with him and so he instead chose to blame Buffy. However, the point was he couldn't deny his crypt was rather a nice set-up. Hooked up the TV, a fridge for his blood, he'd made it quite cosy. Plus, perfect blockage from sunlight during the day and with direct access to the Sunnydale sewer system.
Feeling peckish, Spike got up from his armchair and headed over to the fridge he had nicked from a house two streets down from the cemetery, before they had even had a chance to have it installed or taken into the house. Stupid Sunnydalians- shifting furniture in the evening when the sun no longer kept them, or their furniture, safe. Once he pulled open the refrigerator door, he had to dive right in to reach the blood as he realized he was running low. He'd have to get the Slayer to get some for him...that might be a bit of a problem though considering what had happened just last week what with the chaining her to a cave and electrocuting her and stuff...whoops. With a resigned sigh Spike slammed the fridge door shut loudly, but jumped in shock on the spot with an involuntary and slightly embarrassing startled yell as he saw Joyce casually perched on top of the coffin central to his home- the one in which he had hid from the Initiative last year numerous times.

“For god's sake Joyce, make a bit of bloody noise when you sneak up on people eh?” He requested, anger overtaking shock and surprise, “Bloody hell, you've gotten more like your bleedin' daughter sneak-up wise since...since...er-”

“I died?” Joyce filled in casually, not as sensitive about the topic as Spike was.

“Er, yeah that,” He nodded, “Look, what you doing here? Wait, how'd ya get here? Daylight and all that” He asked as he took his seat again, pouring the packet of blood into a mug and Joyce shrugged in reply.

“I used to hear Buffy talking about 'vamps jamming on sewer systems' all the time,” She explained, “I figured...” She shrugged again.

“Figured you'd give it a whirl eh?” He finished knowingly.

“Besides,” She added, not jumping off her seat on the stone coffin, “You said you'd be here if I wanted to stop by,” She looked around with an amused smile, “I don't see any cocoa though”

“No, that was your thing,” He said pointedly, leaving a tad more sadness in the air than he intended; after all, it wasn't like Joyce was the type to make him that drink anymore. It was no longer who she was, and that, Spike realized, was one of the many things he found sad about it. “Right,” He said, trying to reaffirm his devil-may-care-i'm-the-big-bad attitude, “What do you want? Coz as kinky as the vampire you has become, given the strength of the smell of Xander on you last night, I really don't think you're here for the hot monkey love, so have it out”

Joyce finally slid off her seat and walked over to Spike, sitting down on the small table beside him as she leaned forward to ask him the question that was plaguing her mind.

“How do you turn another?” She asked, “Make them a vampire...erm...sire them is it?” Spike smirked in reply.

“Why on earth would you wanna know...” Spike's smirk faded and he stopped his amused laugh as he realized exactly why Joyce wanted to know such a thing, “You wanna turn one of them don't you...you wanna turn the Watcher. Joyce, that's pissing murder! Going after the Watcher is almost as bad as going after the Slayer. Not only could the Watcher kick your butt, but the Slayer won't be bloody far behind and that's just a sure fire away to end up the sexy pile of dust”

“You think I'm sexy?” Joyce raised an eyebrow in intrigue and Spike rolled his eyes in exasperated response.

“I have a thing about girls in leather alright? It don't mean nothing, and that's not the point here,” He added, “All I'm saying is coming up against the Slayer will just make sure you end up dead...er”

“You've killed two Slayers,” She pointed out.

“I'm flattered you know that much,” He replied smoothly, before getting back to the point, “And I was an arrogant sod that's why. And a damn sight better fighter than most"

“I was never a fighter...” Joyce said lightly, her eyes becoming glazed over and Spike noticed she seemed to falling into her own thoughts, her own reverie as she went over things in her mind, “I was a girlfriend protected by a boyfriend, then a wife protected by a husband and then when I became a mother I thought 'here's the chance to be the protector, to be the strong one' and then my daughter turned out to be the savior of all mankind,” She laughed, “So that went out the window. But now, Spike, now...I get to be the fighter, the stronger one and it's...it's exhilarating.” She leaned more and more forward with each word she said as though urging Spike to understand what she meant, to comprehend what she was talking about. When she saw he was completely hooked on everything she said she asked abruptly, “How do I turn him?” Spike looked completely thrown as though despite the fact they had talked about it moments ago, he was still shocked and surprised by the question, “Come on,” Joyce pleaded, “Darla won't tell me and Drusilla's too insane to explain it properly”

“Darla won't tell you?” Spike asked, interest brooked.

“No,” Joyce shook her head, “She said it would be pointless”

“Ah, I see,” Spike nodded knowingly, realizing what exactly Darla had said to Joyce since he had once had the exact same words said to him, “Let me guess, she gave you the old 'nothing belongs to you'. Angel sang me that tune when I first became a vamp, told me Dru would never be mine,” He sniffed in distaste, still clearly sore about that conversation, “And look what happened to us- we lasted nearly over a hundred years. Not mine, my arse. We belonged to each other alright, still would if I hadn't gone and messed everything up and your bleeding daughter hadn't got involved. You know, Darla and Angel- they never did belong to each other. Too much in love with their bloody selves, that's what, so they think the same rules apply to everybody else.” As he continued to talk, Joyce saw that Spike seemed to get more and more agitated, more worked up,as though going over the memory in his mind was reminding him of how he had initially felt about it and it was bringing centuries old bitter resentments and frustrations, “Alright,” He eventually said to her, “I'll tell you how. But if you're gonna do it, by god do it, don't back out. Otherwise you will end up the big pile of dust.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As night fell, Joyce had decided to make an appearance at her former home-might as well keep up the pretense as long as possible. She'd seen enough as a human to know that if Buffy found out and came against her, it would be she and not Buffy that would end up dead. For now that is, but soon she planned on that all changing. So she had returned to 1630 Revello Drive to find both her daughters in fact out. A note attached to the small table next to the front door informed her that yes they had presumed she had spent the night at a friends and Buffy had taken Dawn out for ice cream. There was also a P.S not to bring home any gigolos or homicidal robots.
Walking up the stairs, Joyce walked into bedroom intent on finding an outfit to wear that would be daring enough to push all of Rupert's buttons, but reserved enough to make her look like she was still the old Joyce, so she wouldn't arouse any suspicion such as she had done the previous night. She had risked it then, because she felt like taking risks, but tonight she had to do things a lot more carefully if she wanted it all to turn out how she planned.

Opening her wardrobe she flicked through the numerous items in there. Tops, pants, skirts, shoes, scarfs and way at the back- as though kept there to preserve their perfect almost never wore state- dresses. A lot of them were black, but they seemed too dressy just generally. They gave the look of a formal dinner and that wouldn't so much give her away as make Rupert think she was crazy dressing so much for just his simple apartment. No, she needed something a little more casual. There, at the far back hung something perfect. A summer dress, nothing over the top in design; just a halter-neck, barely above knee length, a deep sky blue with thin appliqué red roses did, admittedly, give the dress the image of belonging to a box of chocolates, but it was ideal for the occasion. Rupert wouldn't suspect a thing...not until it was way too late.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giles wasn't really expecting anyone to stop by that night. There were no great evils brewing and Buffy and the others were enjoying a welcome break from having to fight the good fight all the time. He knew Willow and Tara were out together and that Dawn and Buffy were having ice cream, but he didn't wish to dwell too much on what he knew most likely Anya and Xander would be doing. So, when he heard a knock at the door he was quite surprised by the sound and was immediately intrigued by who could possible be at his door. Intrigue quickly turned to pleasant surprise when he saw Joyce stood there. It was even more pleasant when he saw what she was wearing. She smiled nervously at him.
“Hi, I uh...I hope this isn't a bad time,” She said, not quite meeting his eyes and looking extremely nervous as she spoke.

“Joyce,” He smiled, “No, not at all, of course it's not” He hurried to say, stepping aside out of the way of the doorway, “God you must be freezing in that,” He commented on her outfit, “Come on, get inside”

With a smile, Joyce walked into the warm home. Such a simple thing and yet it granted her so much power.

“I'm a little cold, yes,” She admitted. It wasn't a lie, but she hadn't told him the fact that she no longer felt the cold. As she followed him into the main part of the seating area, she silently reminded herself to play this all low-key; looking nervous, embarrassment, shyness- all vital parts of looking like the woman she once was. If the old her had ever stopped by here, not that she ever would have dared, there would have been nerves abundant and so that was exactly how she was going to have to play it.

“W-would you like a, uh, a drink perhaps?” He suggested, incredibly nervous. As nervous as she was pretending to be. He was so sweet, such a kind soul and like Buffy, he was born to protect though his was a lot more gentler fashion. It was all this that had initially attracted her to him. And she supposed that's where the attraction still lay now. To see such a kind soul and know she could change, make it her own. Make it dark and powerful. To be able to change something, someone so much- that was an addictive power.

“Yes, that would be nice,” She smiled and enjoyed watching him as he poured the drinks.

“Did you have a nice time last night?” He asked, causing Joyce to jump slightly in panic before she realized that he was in fact talking about the 'girls night out' she had claimed to have.

“Oh it was...it was lovely, yes, oh thank you” She took the glass from him, taking a tiny sip before holding it in both her hands as though she were taking warmth from it. “So how is...the Magic Box?” She asked, feigning politeness, feigning that she cared at all.

“You look very nice,” He answered in reply causing her to raise her eyebrows at him.

“I don't think that was a question I asked,” She smiled, allowing it to become a laugh which he eventually matched, though his was of a slightly more nervous variety. “But thank you anyway. You don't think it's too much?”

“Depends on the reason for wearing it,” He replied smoothly and Joyce found herself surprised at how unpredictably his nerves could slide away. He took off his glasses with the hand not holding the glass of alcohol and she sighed. And how quickly the nerves could come back. Right, she needed to move this along. Inside, she was crying out to taste him and if she wasn't careful, or if she waited too long, she was going to give in completely and wholly to that desire and just take him abruptly...which could end badly. Particularly for her. She'd seen and heard of him staking enough vampires to know he was a potential danger to her.

“And what exactly do you think my reason for wearing it is?” She asked coyly, ducking her head slightly to portray the same nervousness he was bearing.

“I'm actually afraid to say in case I wager a guess that is completely off target,” He admitted, putting his glasses back on and taking a sip of his drink that became more of a gulp. Joyce smiled and slid along the sofa on which she was sat so she was now adjacent to where Rupert was sat in the chair.

“What if I were to say...” She let her fingers gracefully and gently travel up and down his thigh, the coldness of her fingertips didn't travel through the trouser leg but the sensations of the movement did. “I wore it...for you?”

“Then I would say,” He replied, “That my initial guess was rather a good one” He took the hand that was gracing his thigh in his own and Joyce almost gasped at the warmth in his hand- how quickly she had forgotten that heat. The kind of heat that was only created from warm blood being rushed around by a beating heart. It was now, as he took her hand in his, that she picked up on that very heart starting to increase it's rate, the beats becoming faster, more frantic. This was going better than she'd planned if he was already that interested and everything inside of her was screaming to take the moment, take advantage. Want, take, have; it was a mantra of Darla's that Joyce found herself adopting.

She was already wanting as he was in return but before she could make any move to take, to posses, Rupert made the move first as, using the hand that hadn't taken hers, he cupped her face in his palm and claimed her mouth with his own. Just as she felt his nerves and not a little shame trickle back into the kiss, she sought control again, wrapping her arm around him, placing her hand against the back of his neck to keep him upon her, to allow him no escape.

“Jesus, you're colder than you were letting on,” He commented as he came up for air, starting to kiss along her jaw bone and her neck. For one brief moment she worried the game was up too quickly- she didn't want to take him completely until it was exactly what he desired, only then and that way would he be entirely hers- that the inhuman coldness of her flesh would reveal to him what she now was, but the caress, the kisses didn't stop but merely increased in passion and pace and she knew all was okay as he trailed from her jaw, along her neck to her chest with kisses, eventually pulling her toward him again as he teased her shoulder and neckline with his tongue. As he did so she arched toward him, finding every sensation exhilarating, only further emphasized by the intensely pleasurable heat of his skin. She wrapped her arms tightly around him, her hands pressing against his back, feeling the increasing heartbeat pulse through her palms. God that was a more thrilling sensation than anything else he was paying to her and as she cried out in surprised pleasure when he began teasing her ear with his mouth in an expertly brilliant way, her every instinct told to her to bite down; his neck was there, so bare, so vulnerable, so inviting. But no, not yet. This was to go on a little longer until she felt to the point of knowing he wanted it as much as she did and if she were perfectly honest with herself she was enjoying prolonging this part of it all. It was foreplay on so many levels.

“God, why did we wait so long to do this?” Rupert demanded, but didn't give her chance to answer as he kissed her again, the hand previously caressing her cheek now sliding down along, gripping her shoulder powerfully, almost possessively before grazing her breast, then the gentlemen in him returning, the hand moved to the small of her back.

“Self-preservation?” Joyce finally managed to gasp in answer, “My daughter has a tendency to follow through with her threats”

“Yes, unfortunately,” He murmured in agreement, before maneuvering onto a more comfortable seat on the sofa, never breaking the kiss, as he effortlessly lifted her onto his knee, her legs instinctively wrapping around him. Continuing to kiss him, she started to unbutton his shirt and at an almost frantic pace and in response he reached around her to un-knot the tie at the back of her dress.

As finally she pushed the shirt open, her eyes ran over him appreciatively. But god, the man looked good. If she didn't think this was all a good idea before, she suddenly thought it now. She began doing some tongue teasing of her own and she felt his heart beat faster in pleasure, his temperature rising as he slipped off the top half of her dress completely to find she was wearing nothing underneath. Well, she wasn't going to be completely conservative was she? She shrugged out of the straps completely with ease and resumed her ministrations, encouraging him to continue his own, which indeed he did. It was as he stroking her breast at the exact same beat as kissing along her neck and shoulder line that she really, truly felt she could no longer contain herself anymore. She kissed him roughly and possessively on the mouth, but before she could give her attention to his neck, he maneuvered his hands further down and she let out an involuntary cry of pleasure in response, bucking against him, the racing beat of his heart seeming to make her own alive again.

Suddenly, the ministrations stopped though his heartbeat continued to race and Joyce frowned in puzzlement, wondering what on earth had caused him to stop. She certainly hadn't told him to, if anything she had encouraged him to continue further. She pulled away to look at his face to see what was wrong and she saw he wore an expression of horror.

“Oh no, please no,” He begged sounding so completely desperate, “Not you Joyce please”

Pulling one hand away from him tentatively, she reached to touch her own face, feeling the facial features and the unnatural grooves that had protruded forward. Damn, she'd vamped out. Really, he should take it as a compliment that merely his foreplay was so good it caused such a thing to happen.

“I should have known something was wrong...you weren't right...not since we saw you last night,” He continued to say and before she could do anything about he shoved her off his knee causing her to fall back into the sofa as he quickly rose from his seat, stepping away from her in what wasn't quite fear so much as wariness. As she sat there, curled up in the seat, holding the dress up over herself she reverted to her human face and she knew without reflection that she was the image of a hurt, lost woman. She knew because she saw Rupert's expression change as it happen, it softened. And there was a sadness there, as though he had truly lost something. “How did this happen?”

“I thought you were the expert on that,” She replied smoothly. She noticed he wasn't reaching for a stake.

“That is, I mean who?” He amended his question and she sighed as she started to slip her dress back on.

“Why would you want to know?” She asked him with a knowing smile as she stood up out of her seat, “So you can hunt them down? Make it all better?” Her tone was a mocking one, “If you must know it was a vampire called Darla, I don't know whether you know her, but she came to my house a few years ago. It's how she got in”

“Darla?” Giles was stunned, “But she's dead. Angel killed her years ago”

“Well she's alive and kicking now,” Joyce replied, “Well, kicking anyway. I don't advise you go after her Rupert, she'd kill you as soon as look at you”

“You care enough about my well being to warn me?” He asked, almost challenging her.

“I wouldn't say care exactly,” She replied, stepping slowly towards him and she noticed he didn't back away nor did he reach for a weapon, “But there are a lot more interesting and...fun things to do with you” She told him, brushing a cold finger along his cheek before leaning forward to kiss him. It was brief and over in a moment, but his heartbeat increased an amount to let her know it was enough. “Be seeing you, Rupert”

“You're not Joyce,” He stated, as though trying to convince himself more than anything, “You're a demon carrying her memory”

“That's what Buffy used to tell me about vampires you know,” Joyce replied in a slightly conversational tone, “But now I'm on the other side of it, I know different. I'm not Joyce?” She laughed slightly, but it didn't seem to be out of amusement, “I guess we all have to have our little bedtime stories to make it all simpler don't we? Make it all better?”

“You're not Joyce,” He repeated.

“I guess the lie's easier,” She acknowledged kindly, yet knowing her words would plague his mind, “I suppose you'll be telling Buffy”

“You know I have to,” He replied as Joyce turned and walked out the door, “You know she'll kill you if she catches up with you” He called after her and the sly over-the shoulder smile he received in return shook him to his very core.

Okay, a little later than ever planned. But I've been hereto and everywhere in the past five months and free time and recent reminder of this little story prompted me to update. Enjoy. And any feedback is appreicated :-D

Chapter Five: Eternal Torment

Dawn was staying over at Janice's. She had complained about being kept out of the loop but had stopped complaining when Buffy told her Giles had given strict not-to-be-disobeyed instructions that Dawn was not to come to this particular Scooby meeting. Giles so very rarely used his full authority in the group, particularly to extend to Dawn who was technically only under her Mother's authority, that when he did everyone immediately fell in line.

So now the entire gang were gathered in Giles' living room, patiently, or rather not so patiently waiting to hear what dreadful news had prompted such a meeting.

“Giles? Is it Glory?” Buffy asked anxiously, and thinking back on how her Mother hadn't returned home. She and Dawn had assumed she'd stayed over at a friend's, she'd done it a couple of times before after all, but what if it was something worse? More serious. Glory had said she would come after her friends and her family; what if she'd already begun? “Has she got Mom? She hasn't hurt her has she?”

“It's not Glory, Buffy,” Giles replied softly, going to take a seat in the arm chair next to the others gathered on the sofa, but realizing that was where he had been sat hours ago when Joyce had come to him, he quickly changed his mind and remained standing, “But I'm afraid it is about your Mother”

“What is it?” Buffy looked like a lost child, so young, trusting and innocent and in direct contrast Giles had never felt older. He was tired and weary. Tired of it all. He shouldn't have to tell Buffy things like this, it should never be an issue. Her Mother should have lived a long and healthy life, looking after her daughters and by extension the other children also. She was the one anchor to everything safe and normal in Buffy's life. No matter what she faced, Giles knew the young Slayer took comfort in the fact that she could always return home to her Mother. And now she would no longer have even that.

“Your Mother came to visit me a couple of hours ago,” He told them all.

“Did something happen then?” Willow asked anxiously, holding tightly onto Tara's hand for support.

“Yes, I suppose so. Though technically it happened before last night,” He replied.

“What? What happened last night?” Buffy was understandably agitated and worried and with each question she sat further forward in her seat, desperate for answers.

“Yeah, you're killing us with the suspense here G,” Xander told him, trying for lightness in a dark situation, but how close he was sat to Anya showed he was more in need for comfort than anyone else.

“Buffy, I'm so sorry to have to tell you this,” Giles spoke directly to the girl, as though none of the others were in the room, “But your Mother...she's...” He sighed, how was he supposed to say something like this? He couldn't even phrase it kindly enough, “She...a couple of nights ago. She was turned Buffy. She's a vampire”

“What?” The question barely had any sound to it, Buffy's voice was so weak. “No, no you're wrong Giles,” She insisted, “You have to be. It wasn't her Giles, it can't be. Are you sure? I mean m-maybe it was something else, something that looked like her. Some demons do that, r-right?” She looked around for confirmation from her friends but there was none there, she was met with only darkened sad faces.

“I'm sure it was her, Buffy,” Giles told her, “I'm so sorry”

“Oh god...” Buffy started crying, dropping her head into her hands, “This has to be a dream Giles. This can't be real...god, what am I gonna tell Dawnie? Oh, Dawn...”

“We can fix this though right?” Xander asked, sounding desperate to the point of panic, “I mean that's what we do, right? We fix things, make things better. Come on Avengers, gotta get with the assemblin'”

“Oh! Oh!” Willow suddenly brightened with a thought, “The curse, the gypsy curse!” She exclaimed in suggestion and when everyone frowned at her, she hurried to explain, “We can ensoul her, give her soul back. Then it won't be evil Buffy's Mom..it'll just be Buffy's Mom”

“With the guilt of god knows how many deaths?” Buffy finished, “I don't know whether I could do that to her”

“Well, Buff, she's only been a vampire like three days,” Xander reasoned, “I'm sure they wouldn't be that much guilt...it's gotta be the only thing to do right?”

“Yes, maybe, I don't know...” Buffy was confused, “So, we do that- ensoul her,” She proposed hypothetically, “Then what? She lives an eternal life like Angel, watching everything she cares about die around her? Never living a normal life, never able to go out into the daylight though she'll always want to? Alive to see everyone living but never being able to live herself? Never able to work at the gallery again? I couldn't do that to her, I couldn't”

“Well, I've been studying up on demons and their properties recently,” Tara owned up, shy and unintruding, “Some have uh b-blood that bring life...maybe we c-c-could use something like that to, uh, to-to help your Mom...”

“I'm not sure Tara,” Giles said, “If such a thing were possible surely we would of heard of it by now. If it were possible then...”

“Angel would be alive,” Buffy finished sadly, “He wouldn't be a vampire” There was silence throughout the room, it was deathly and filled with things none of them wished to think about and then suddenly Buffy spoke up, “Willow, how long would it take to get everything ready for the spell?”

“A couple of days maybe?” Willow replied, unsure exactly how long it would take, “I'd need to get all the ingredients. And the Orb of Thesulah”

“Right,” Buffy nodded, “That's enough time to think things through, to decide what to do about it all. Tara?”

“Y-yes?”

“Please keep researching into that demon blood cure thing...please?” Buffy sounded very little as she made this plea and Tara's eyes were filled with love and understanding as she nodded

“Of course”

“Buffy, if you come across her, on patrol perhaps-” Giles began but Buffy cut him off.

“I can't kill her Giles. I won't. I just...can't”

“You were able to kill Angel when you had to,” He pointed out kindly but she only looked at him incredulously in response.

“'Able' isn't exactly the word I'd use Giles. That one thing I was 'able' to do almost destroyed me. And that's why I can't go through that again. Not yet. She's still my Mom”

“No. She's not,” Giles said quietly and firmly, “She is a demon. A demon wearing your Mother's face, that is all”

“How can you say that?” She demanded of him speaking in the same quiet and low tone as he did.

“Because it's true,”

“No, it's not,” She argued, “And I can see you think the same- I can see it in your eyes. If she really is just a demon then why are we even having this conversation? Huh, Giles? If she's just a demon than why are we thinking about how to save her, huh?! Why aren't we just out there hunting it down?” Giles had no reply and Buffy knew exactly why, “Because it's not an it, it's not just a demon. A demon's in there, sure, but it is still my Mom. And this is not time to be shoving Council thoughts at me Giles. Please. I deserve, I've earned more than that”

“I know,” Giles accepted, “But if you continue to think of her as your Mother it will drive you to the point of self-destruction.” He sighed, “What are you going to do if you come across her Buffy? Before Willow has the chance to do the spell?”

“I'll fight her,” Buffy replied, her voice stronger than she felt herself, “But I won't kill her. I'll patrol tonight, keep things in check I guess, but the rest of you stay indoors okay? You can't risk it. I can't risk it, okay?”

There were nods and accompanying murmurs of 'Sure, Buffy'.

“And another thing,” She added, standing up, “Dawn isn't to hear about any of this, okay?”

“Buffy, I'm not keen to break Dawnie's heart,” Willow agreed, “But wouldn't it be safer if she like knows...”

“We'll keep an eye on her, each of us watch her, I'll tell her that Mom's under a spell or something and dangerous and to stay away for now, but she is not going to know the truth, not until we know for sure we can't do anything to fix it. Are. We. Clear?” They were clear and the glare Buffy gave them all allowed no room for arguments.

They all got up to leave, decidedly less chatty then they had been when they first arrived. They trailed out the front door as if an entourage for a funeral of a loved one, which if they thought on it, they all felt they were.

“Buffy?” Giles said, just as she reached the door as to leave. She stopped and slowly turned around to look at him.

“What?” She asked wearily, wondering whether he had any more dreadful news to tell her, something to make this day so much worse.

“Joyce, when she was here...she told me who her sire was” He informed her and Buffy stood up a little straighter. This gave her something to fight, something tangible to defeat. She couldn't bear to kill her mother but she could sure as hell kill the one who turned her.

“Who was it?”

“Darla”

Buffy was stunned, but only for a moment. Then she gained a sense of purpose of determination.

“I'll hunt her down and kill her,” Buffy told them, “Then I'll wonder how the hell she's back” She turned on her heel and left, leaving Giles on his own in the apartment once more. He realized then that she had set him no task to do, nothing to do to help Joyce;. Maybe he wasn't related to her, nor did he have the close bond the rest of the kids had with her as a sort of surrogate Mother, but he had grown to care quite a lot for the woman and wished there was more to do to help her than just sit around. Then again, there was wasn't there?

“I thought you'd come back here,” He said, keeping his back to the entrance but knowing Joyce was stood in the doorway anyway. “Now that Buffy's on patrol”

“And you didn't tell her to wait here for me?” Joyce raised an eyebrow, “Allowing me to escape an undoubtable staking? Rupert, I'm touched” Her tone was a mocking one. He turned around to face her and saw that she was no longer trying to be conservative or look at all like she did when she was alive as the skirt, top and shoes she wore now would attest.

“All in red Joyce?” He questioned, “Slightly cliché don't you think?”

“What can I say?” She shrugged, “The color suits me”

“Admittedly,” He nodded, remaining calm and Joyce noted that his heartbeat didn't even increase slightly. Very good self-control there. Very good. She leant against the doorway, not stepping in; unsure as to whether he had already performed the de-invite and not wishing to step forward and make a fool of herself as she came across a barrier.

“So you agree?” She smiled at him and he took a seat on the sofa as he answered.

“It's hard not to really,” He replied evenly and Joyce saw that he viewed her as no threat. She didn't know whether this annoyed her or pleased her. She decided it was a little bit of both. She tentatively reached one foot out to push against the barrier, to test it, but surprisingly found none there. She smiled, stepping completely into the apartment and clicking the door shut quietly behind her. It was almost too easy...or was Rupert already giving in?

“I know de-invites take a little while,” She said to him, “But I would have thought that would be your first priority.” He didn't reply, “Or is there something you didn't want to admit to the children? You didn't tell them about what happened while I was here did you? Just how you discovered my recent...change.” She walked towards him, “You also didn't tell them of how you wanted more...you want it desperately don't you?” He went to say something but she put a finger to his lips, “No, don't deny it. I know you do. You're trying so hard to keep your heartbeat in check, knowing I could feel it, hear it...but you've forgotten everything else that's giving you away. Every cell, every molecule, every drop of blood in your body,” She trailed her fingers gently up and down his arm as she talked, “Tells me how much you want me.” She slipped onto a seat on the arm of the sofa beside him. “It makes you smell different...” She whispered as she began to tease and nibble his ear. The heart rate picked up a little then, “It's intoxicating...reminds me of why I want you. Why I have to have you” She continued her ministrations as she spoke softly to him, “You know...you're all I can think about...all I need...and I know you feel the same although you fight it. Don't,” She told him, “Don't fight it; Embrace it,” She reached his lips, kissing him possessively and eventually, though she felt slight reluctance in the change, he was kissing her back. “That's more like it,” She grinned and began picking up where they left off hours ago.

“Joyce,” He managed to say in between kisses and frantic undressing.

“Mm-hmm?”

“Why me?” He asked and Joyce didn't stop what she was doing as she answered.

“Already know what I'm up to huh?” Knowing he wasn't just referring to what the foreplay-that-was-rapidly-becoming-means-to-a-glorious-end was going to lead to, but rather to the fact her main plan was to turn him and make him a vampire, “Well the frank, blunt answer is..” His shirt already gone, she unzipped his trousers and set about hooking her fingers in the waistband of his underwear, “You're hot. I know- not something I would have had the gall to say a few days ago” She grinned as she pulled both items off of him in one smooth movement, “But there we go. And the more complicated answer?” She let him work on taking off her lower garments while she shrugged off her top and bra, “You're all I can think about right now. No matter where I am my thoughts run back to you...thoughts of having you. And in case you didn't realize- that kind of drifting thought? Not exactly beneficial to my survival. Now doesn't this make things so much simpler?” She asked, referring to their naked forms, “Makes us...” She sat astride him, reaching over to kiss, tease and nibble along his shoulder, her hands pushing against his chest, “equals...” She whispered, before resuming kissing him. It seemed natural, no pushing or demanding from either side, when he slid inside her, pushing against the waiting and willing flesh.

They were moving in perfect sync with one another and with Rupert's racing heartbeat. They fell down horizontally onto the sofa, Joyce on top as she drove him on. He was demanding and possessive enough to challenge her and by god, it was exhilarating. And the way he moved, his ministrations and the way he felt, looked, smelt. God and if he was like this alive...Joyce shivered in delight at the thought of what he would be like once he fully embraced his darker side.

In fact, the closer she felt the two of them coming to climax, the closer she knew it was to that time when she would finally be able to answer the call his blood was shouting to her, beckoning her. So close, so very, very close. The rocking increased his rhythm, yet again matching his rapidly beating heart and Joyce reached down, her hands clawing his shoulder possessively. The blood pumped through the veins powerfully and as she leant down towards his neck, the feeling of his beating heart reverberated in her own still chest and she wondered, for one brief moment, whether she would miss this beating of his heart, the heat of his alive flesh- was it perhaps worth keeping him alive a while longer? No, the demon inside commanded. She needed to have and take him now, this instant. Her face contorted, the vampiric visage coming forward and she reached down to his neck, ready to bite.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw one of Rupert's hands, previously pressing eagerly and possessively against her back, reach out behind him. Something dark, gleaming and pointed was now held in his hand, something wooden and decidedly lethal to her well-being; a stake. Well, the little conniving son of a bitch, so the Watcher in him had something up his sleeves after all and here she was thinking he was giving himself so willingly. Well, things weren't going to go as he planned either. Still keeping their increasing motion, Joyce whipped out with her right arm quick as a flash grabbing his stake-holding wrist in her hands. “Good,” She complimented him, a smile on her face, “But not good enough” His eyes widened in surprise, “Darla taught me a few tricks,” She explained with a smirk, squeezing tighter on his wrist causing him to drop the stake. She kept hold of the hand, grasping tightly as they continued to rock, before she bent down and sank her teeth deeply into his neck, piercing the veins to reach the beckoning blood and as they both climaxed, she drank deep.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Darla had waited for her four nights ago, now Joyce waited for Rupert. She found she did not have the patience her own sire had and she paced his living room restlessly. She had gotten dressed again soon after she had drained him and she had attempted to re-dress him; she had felt that it would be inappropriate for him to rise again completely naked. It was such a conservative thought and she knew it was from the remnants of her old self, her human self. Some of them just wouldn't get lost unfortunately. So she had dressed him as reasonably as she could. And now she was just waiting, but it was coming for the mid early hours of the morning- barely a couple before sunrise began- and he still hadn't rose. Hadn't she risen the same night she had been bitten? Then why wasn't he doing the same? Or had she risen so early because she had been turned just before the sun set? Maybe that was a contributing factor. God, she didn't know enough about all this. Maybe Rupert wouldn't rise until tomorrow in which case she was completely and utterly screwed. Buffy and the others were sure to return tomorrow and when they found Rupert this way they were sure to stake him before he had the chance to get up from the sofa, and then she'd be next on the list for definite.
“Shit,” She muttered to herself, refusing to let herself panic or permit entry of the thought that perhaps Darla had been right. She just needed to get him out of here, but where to? Not to Darla and Drusilla, not until he had risen. Darla already didn't approve of the concept and if she found out she'd actually done it Joyce doubted she'd help very much at all. That left Spike. And Spike did have a crypt where they could keep him...it was perfect.

She'd have the move fast though, she realized as she look across the room at the clock that was ticking away the minutes, voicing the countdown till sunrise. Hopefully, she could make it there and back and there again with Spike before they came across any problems be it Scooby, Sun, or Slayer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spike always liked to return home a good few hours before the sun began to threaten his existence. Maybe it was the amount of times he'd almost been caught out in the deadly daylight that made him think this way, but he just always preferred to have a few hours on his side. The only times he'd ever been forced to risk it was when Buffy had come kicking down his door to ask for help, most often to find the bit. Sometimes to look after her Mom- not that that was going to be happening anymore.
He still felt sad over that. He accepted he was a soulless monster as Buffy had repeated to him so many times, but despite all that Joyce had always treated him like a person. She was kind and sweet and not at all a part of all the darkness and evil everyone else in Buffy's life faced, which had been refreshing. She'd always been there for him with a cuppa and a kind word, she was just...Joyce. And now she was just another vampire, a vampire with a familiar face perhaps, but still a vampire. She no longer offered kind words, but was bold and out there in a way she had never been in life and Spike believed this wasn't just down to her turning but the amount of time she had spent with Darla and Drusilla. That did things to a person. Now Joyce, although she had never been one to put on airs, no longer carried the graces she used to and just demanded his help. Or used sex appeal to get it which, he admitted, disturbed him a great deal. She'd been like a Mum to him and now he was getting the naughty thoughts for her. None of this could lead to anything good.

“Spike!” The door to his crypt burst open.

“Speak of the devil slash vampire slash-” Joyce came into his sight, “-lady in red” He took in her outfit. She had to stop doing this. Maybe he would storm around to Darla's and demand she stop taking Joyce to the racier clothes stores in Sunnydale. He'd heard about the dead shopkeepers so he knew which ones they were going to.

“I kinda need your help,” She told him and Spike only raised a single eyebrow in silent inquiry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Jesus, Joyce,” Spike cursed when he arrived at Giles' flat and saw the scene on the sofa, “He won't rise till tomorrow night y'know” He only said this to cover up the actual shock he was feeling, When he'd helped clear up the details for Joyce on how to turn someone he had been sure she wasn't going to go through with it. She was too young, too new. And even if she tried, he was afraid it would be a death mission. Rupes may not be the quickest of the Scoobies, but even Spike had to admit he knew his stuff and had some moves. He hadn't for once even considered this option; that she would go through with it and succeed

“I know...” She agreed, “that's why I need your help”

“My help?” He asked, “Why the bloody hell do you need...” He trailed off as he saw in Joyce's eyes what she was planning to ask him, “What? No effing way Joyce. I'm not having him in my house”

“I don't think a crypt can be classed as a house,” She retorted.

“It's my home!” He argued.

“It has no floor for crying out loud,” She countered incredulously and he sighed in frustration with a roll of the eyes.

“Joyce? No” He said simply and turned and went to leave the apartment, but Joyce grabbed his arm before he could and he turned to see her looking at him pleadingly.

“Please, Spike. I need your help...I've got nowhere else to go”

Later Spike would say to himself that what made him say yes was the fact she looked so much like what she had been like before she died, that it was that what had made him relent. It was not in any way that for a moment her purposely lost expression had given her the impression of a sweet, abandoned kitten. He already had too many confusing feelings for this woman without adding a comparison he was ashamed to admit he, Big Bad, had ever thought up.

“Fine, let's get back to mine. But bloody quick. Might be best if we use the sewers actually,” He suggested as he walked over to Giles' cold form. “His clothes are on a bit strange. Can't Rupes dress himself properly these days?”

Joyce didn't say anything, but merely helped Spike pick him up but her silence, to the ever insightful Spike, spoke volumes.

“Oh for crying out loud,” He muttered and decided to just focus firmly on the task at hand.
