Someone told me about this vile sounding thing today.. apparently it IS a thing, and it IS a popular thing at that. I don't think fruit and rice would go well together.. neither fruit and wasabi. Has anyone heard or, or tried fruit sushi?

I still say it looks pretty good! Not vile at all. Especially considering that they sweeten the rice. Makes me think of "ris a la Malta" which we eat here.

You never said they sweeten the rice you said "wonder if that would be tasty... like if you had vanilla extract in the rice to make it sweet"
But what does sweet rice taste like anyway? I still don't think I would be keen on it. Oh god. I hate rice pudding! ris a al Crappa.

Some people cannot eat fish, and this could be a refreshing treat. Especially considering that it seems they sweeten the rice. It would probably be healthier than sushi.

If you can't eat fish, don't mess with sushi. Eat something else.
Carbs go with anything, sweet or sour. That's their thing so no, it doesn't surprise me.
Sweet and sour pork is served with rice and that's delicious.

But this IS sushi and it's not fish. Sushi is nothing but rice wrapped around other ingredients. Typically, but not always, its fish. It's only in the modern, commercialized era that sushi equals fish. I never knew that until today. I always thought sushi was fish, but sushi is the rice wrapping and has nothing to do with whats inside the rice.

I didn't say sushi was fish.

Sweetened rice, usually made with melted butter and sugar, is a fairly common side dish in the South, and not uncommon as a breakfast food, served warm, like oatmeal.

Is it really?!?! So like grits? For breakfast?!

I've never had sweet grits!

As a recipe, sliced fruit instead of fish/veg? Nah. Maybe separately it would work. The sweet rice and fruit, without being rolled.

Although, to be fair, I didn't eat raw fish sushi when I was pregnant, but would order veg sushi instead. But I would not ever order fruit sushi.

@brinkster130 "I've never had sweet grits!" I thought all grits were made with sugar and tons of butter (or lard)

Maybe? I've always had them cheesy or savory like with shrimp and grits.

Yeah I mean I occasionally put sugar in my grits ha and I'm sure this would taste similar if not better...I've seen this before and I've wanted to try it ever since. I love sushi, possibly in all of its forms 😀

Shrimp grits!?! Oh that sounds vile. I cannot eat of the shrimp. It is not allowed.

@brinkster130 "Really? You're missing out!" I agree, I am missing out.. but you neglect to say what I am missing out on in this case. And thats missing out on eating vile little disgusting creatures that look like underwater cockroaches that run along the ocean floor eating (and pooping) everything they can get those little tentacles on. I am missing out on seeing one of those little constipated creatures burrowed down between the sweet and savory grits on my spoon ready to pop out and poop out all in my mouth with the first bite. Yes, Brinky, I am missing out. But not missing out on anything positive. Be my guest.

What's wrong with cockroaches? A lot of people use their dead bodies for necklaces!
What type of rice is used, or recommended? A short grain pudding rice sounds nice or the long grain rice normally used for main meals sounds okay.
Fruit sushi sounds quite nice depending on what combination of fruits are used.
It has to be better than dead raw fish, that sounded and tasted ruddy awful, even when soaked in a marinade or Tomato Sauce.

How long ago was it that eating any type of raw meat was considered bad for you, now its the norm for people to eat raw meat.

Sweetened rice was something that I had frequently when I was a kid. (Still do, in fact, to the amazement of my Indonesian daughter-in-law) but the only time that I ever saw anyone put sugar on grits was when I was in boot camp in San Diego, California. I've never seen any Southerner eat grits that way.
