Towleroad reported today that a gay Puerto Rican teen was found brutally murdered on the island.

Nineteen-year-old, Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado's body was found burned, decapitated and dismembered on Nov. 14 in Cayey, a city only a few miles away from his hometown in Caguas. According to an iReport by Christopher Pagan, "He was a very well known person in the gay community of Puerto Rico, and very loved." Pagan said, "Never in the history of Puerto Rico has a murder been classified as a hate crime. Even though we have to follow federal mandates and laws, many of the laws in which are passed in the USA such as Obama's new bill, do not always directly get practiced in Puerto Rico." Pagan also noted the public remarks from a police investigator for the case that "˜people who lead this type of lifestyle need to be aware that this will happen'.

Towleroad translated gay activist Pedro Julio Serrano's response:
"It is inconceivable that the investigating officer suggests that the victim deserved his fate, like a woman deserves rape for wearing a short skirt. We demand condemnation of this investigator and demand that Superintendent Figueroa Sancha replace him with someone capable of investigating this case without prejudice."
According to Pagan, the story has only made local headlines and deserves international coverage.

Oh my Lord. I read this yesterday, but didn't have a chance to post it up. This is terrible. I can't believe that people are so unbelievably monstrous to do something like this. It really sickens me to my stomach. I hate that the people in this world can be so hateful. As a gay person myself, I really feel that the hating and intolerance of gays has come completely out of hand. There are murders and rapes being committed every day. A man who worked with me was arrested for possession of child pornography. And these are the people you choose to take it out on. It's stuff like this that really makes me embarrassed to call myself a human.

That's so awful:(
This would be a lot rarer, at least in the case of Puerto Rico, if they would actually enforce their hate crime laws. Gay lynching there is sort of swept under the rug oftentimes, the way the lynching of blacks in the American South used to be. Puerto Rican law enforcement, or lack their of, killed that man as much as the ignorant butchers who did the deed, as exemplified by the police officer's remarks at the end of your post.

Truly horrible. But besides the horror of the crime the sad thing is that I'm not shocked. I'm disgusted but not shocked. 🙁

It's all kinds of unacceptable. The action is unacceptable, the attitude behind such actions is unacceptable, the fact that the police obviouly allow their work to be tainted by the same attitude is unacceptable. I can't even begin to fathom what the people who loved him are going through right now.

That's terrible!
I'm not shocked either, :/

i hate homophobic people, it's like grow the f'*** up.

My friend posted a link to this story on his Facebook page yesterday and it brought me to tears. It's disgusting that people would do something like that to another human being, gay or not, but the fact that it was because he was gay was even more sickening. I hate the world sometimes.

Yeah, I got it from Sarah, she tweeted it.
I really wish I could take all the 'phobes and throw them into a pit of fire. I had to write a paper on gay marriage last week, and I asked opinions of kids here at my school. Everyone was for it. It's mostly accepted here, but you have the 'phobe here or there that always has to speak their mind. It makes me pissed that people can act so inhumane sometimes.

Yeah my sis's Bf is such a homophobe, he said he doesn't have anything against gays who just act normal, but the ones that go prancing around like girls he hates.

I hate people like that ( my sis's bf)
If that's the way someone ones to act, then let them be, jeez,
( that wasn't meant to sound offensive btws )🙂
I know lots of gay people, and i love em they're so sweet .

This is horrible. And while I'm speechless and horrified, sadly, I'm not surprised. There's so much hate and homophobia going on, it's unbelievable.
I don't get why people don't just let other people love the people they love and leave them be. It's not as if it's any of their business.

Last week, I posted a quote in my Facebook status from Kathy Najimy on being a gay activist:
"I believe that we all have the potential to love any human being, and that genetics, upbringing, choice, social conditioning and environment play a major part in which way we sway. I believe that we all have the potential to love any human being, and that just love who you wish and celebrate it the best you can. Love is a gift. Between anyone."
I posted that because that perfectly sums up how I feel about gay people. I, myself, am bisexual but I am definitely in the closet. If I came out, it would cause way too much drama in my life and I definitely don't need any more of that any time soon. 🙁 So anyway, this comment in my status started a WAR between my friend Nathan, who is gay, and this guy I went to high school with who is a big conservative Republican. They went at it on my page for 2 whole days before I finally got sick of it and deleted the status message. I only wanted to state my opinion and it got turned into a big debate first over gay rights, then over whether or not gays will go to Hell.
I have to say, I was so proud of Nathan 'cause he was a minister before he came out, so he definitely knows his stuff. Jordan kept trying to use Bible verses against him and Nathan disproved the validity of it every time.

From what I read here, I like Nathan. I'd also like to quote Grey's Anatomy since you mentioned bible verses "You can't pray away the gay." While it is a highly amusingly worded statement, it's also very true.

Wow, this really is terrible. What in the hell is wrong with people? I ask this often. There doesn't seem to be an end to how the evil that people are capable of. Poor kid. *shakes head*

the guy is right, this case should be getting national coverage.

Some countries are so old-fashioned in how they deal with and respond to these types of crimes, regarding gays and women. Did you know that inter-marital rape wasn't punishable under law until 2006 in India? In other words, a woman could not press charges against her husband for rape until then. It was the opinion of the Indian government that the wife was the "property" of the man. The feminists who were responsible for getting that law passed were physically assaulted by the Indian police for attempting to pass out condoms to prostitute women on the street.

Anyway, thanks for postng this, Joe.

Here in Seattle, most of us are very liberal and we all support gay marriage. And I agree its beyond me why people get so up in arms about gay marriage. Like, that it "ruins the sanctity of marraige" blah, blah...whatever! Straight people ruin their marraiges all the time. Joe, there will come a time when you guys can marry for real, I'm sure of it. We just need to keep fighting. 😉

Do you know about unmarried.org? It's a growing movement where straight people vow to not get married and boycott the institution until gay marriage is fully legalized. Many people I know, including myself, have signed it.

This is an especially stupid argument. What's wrong with two people who love each other getting married, I ask. The people who really ruin the sanctity of marriage are starlets and stupid rich kids who think it's fun to get married in Las Vegas for 60 hours.

I really just want to tell those people, "You don't want gay marriage? That's fine. Don't have one. But don't deny people who love each other and want to get married their rights to be equal to heterosexual couples."
