Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar told SCI FI Wire that time constraints, not a lack of interest, prevented her from providing commentaries on the acclaimed TV show's DVD sets. "You know, it's so interesting," she said during an interview while promoting her new film, The Grudge. "Most of the time in this business you really only get one side. You get he who speaks loudest."

The DVD sets of Buffy, which ended its seven-season run on The WB and UPN last year, have featured commentaries by cast and crew, but not the star. "In terms of the DVDs, they always did the commentaries during the show," Gellar said. "I was working constantly, three units. There was never time. It was unfortunate. It was a timing thing. If you tell a line producer, 'OK, we need Sarah for two hours on this day to do commentary,' the line producer is going to tell you, 'Uh-uh.' So that was why I didn't do it during the show. And if I had free time, if for some reason I was getting a day off, I was taking it. I was exhausted." Season seven of Buffy comes out on DVD on Nov. 16.

aw. that's too bad that she didn't get to do a commentary. it's good to hear her side of it though. (i've only actually watched one of the commentary episodes so far, anyway! hehe)

But wouldn't it be in her contract or something?

Anyways I think that is a lame excuse, as at the end of the day you are in control of what you do. I at least thought she would do one interview to hear her thoughts and take on Buffy. Somethiing for the fans to watch again and again.

I doubt they would contractually oblige her to do it, as after all its a 'special' feature, its bonus material. And as for an interview to hear her thoughts on Buffy, there are pleanty of those out there.

I can undestand why fans are upset by this, but personally if I was working non stop and was asked on a rare day off to do something work related, I know what my answer would be.

I agree.

From 1996-2003, that show was her life. And with all the filming and stunt work, I wouldn't want to remain on set any longer than I had to.

As for the fans being upset about the lack of Sarah in DVDs, I think we should be lucky that she gave us seven years of her life with such great acting and talent on one of the best shows ever. For me, thats enough.

Plus I would much rather have commentary from the writers and producers than the actors. They are what build and bring out the characters, they know what the true intentions for every move and dialogue are.

Meh I don't even care if any of the cast does commentary. The only person I'm always dying to hear from is Joss himself or a few of the writers/ directors because they usually have more insight into the story than the cast does.

Totally with you on this. Good for her for speaking up about it. I personally am sick of the SMG bashing.

there is vid on fox's tru calling site, where eliza dushku really gives SMG alot of props for the hard work it is being a leading actress/actor in a show, and all the work it is. the page it's on it's the vid on the side.... (i was thinking of her working hard and not having time to do coments 😉 )

I think it's a damn shame that Gellar has to resort to defending her lack of presence on the DVD commentaries. Not only is it a shame, but it's ridiculous.

polexia, thanks for the link! How sweet of Eliza.

LadyLavinia, I totally agree. It's the fans out there trash-talking her - and that's what makes it so very sad.

Okay, I am going to get bashed so badly now, lol, but I must say what is on my mind because it has been bugging me for ages now.....

Okay, she is always coming up with these lame excuses. She didn't lend her voice to the Buffy game 'Chaos Bleeds', (I'm not sure about the other one) and she is not lending her voice to the Buffy animated series, and now I have just come across this topic. Will she not do ANYTHING for her fans?

Okay, I am sorry, but it is my opinion.

Sarah is an actress, first and foremost. And she is trying to break into movies in a bigger way than she has before. She's now carrying a movie on her own, rather than as an ensemble cast (The Grudge vs. Scooby Doo and Cruel Intentions) When she was on Buffy, (which is when most of the DVDs came out) she was on set all day every day. Think about it: Sarah is in almost every scene unless the episode is a special about another character, like Wild at Heart or Family. I mean, when she wanted to do SNL, they had to write her a big long space of time where Buffy got turned into a rat so she could take a night off! Not too mention, she's married now and has said that when she's not working she wants to be with Freddie, which I totally understand. And I agree with Lady L 100% on this one. SMG should not have to defend herself for working hard. We should be supporting her!

You are entitled to your opinion, you aren't going to get bashed for it! I'm just not going to agree with you though 😀 as I'm sure many others won't (and many will).

Like Anchovy stated, she has given a tremendous part of herself to her fans by being Buffy. It wasn't easy. She's done these really cool fan interviews right on set..one of those 'a fan's dream comes true' type things. They've aired them on TV. I've seen countless fan photos from online friends that Sarah has taken the time to pose for...while on set in-between scenes..while out on her own personal time...etc.

It's funny how much attention she gets (both negative and positive) because she's the star. None of the other castmembers are viewed under such a microscope. Yet we've had countless threads on here that have stated that Buffy was such a group effort, wouldn't have been what it was without ALL of the cast. Yet it's Sarah who gets the bad rap. Personally, I think she's damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. I'd rather see her do more big-screen projects, just means more Sarah I get to enjoy.

I want to appologise for my post. I don't know anything about Sarah and her projects, and I was not in a position to make that judgement. I am sorry again.

Hon you don't need to apoligize!!! You stated an opinion, we stated an opinion..trust me there's been many thread full of opinions that were in line with yours so you're not alone! 😀 This is a discussion board remember 😉

That was really sweet of Sarah to say that. She didn't need to of course, she's so busy that I really wouldn't expect her to do much with extra's on a dvd. I mean in season 7 we have that A & E biography and it has SMG interviews that are fairly recent. She's been so great for the show's run and that's what the dvds are really for, the episodes. Everyone needs some time off and she stays so busy.
