Was Buffy wrong in taking the potentials to the vineyard to confront Caleb? Two died. The deaths had been unnecessary and could have been unavoidable. Plot device?

She had said they hadn't been tested in battle, um, what about the time she and Spike locked them in a crypt with a vampire?

And another thing, when Faith was "elected" as a new leader, she and the potentials captured a bringer without any trouble. If it was that easy, why didn't they try it earlier with Buffy?

Buffy was a pretty new leader of a group that size at this time and I don't think she was entirely prepared for the fact that some of 'her' girls could die, even if intellectually she was aware. The thing is, and as far as plot goes I see the point behind it, you lead people in to battle and some die. It's sad but it happens and Caleb was a great threat to them. These were just teenage girls after all, it's as if Buffy would have taken Dawn to fight with the Master, so really losses kind of were to be expected. However this said...

I think it was necessary for her bringing them despite the fact that they were just teenage girls. The crypt fight (what 7 potentials against 1 vampire?) were hardly at normal odds so to speak and as things were getting increasingly worse Buffy probably knew that she couldn't shield them from the battles. Better let them see what it was like for real, test their reactions and strenghts (abolish any childish notion that it would be awesome and glamouros) and just, show them what it's really about being a Slayer. Sometimes it's about losing, as sad as it is that two of them died, it was a valulable lesson for the group as a whole. A wake up call if you will.

Yeah, but all it did was to lead them into a trap though.

Not sure if Caleb found out what the bringer told the gang and set up a trap afterwards or if the bringer let himself being captured.
Either way I don't think capturing bringers would help them much.

I think Buffy was right. What others options did she had? Hide with the Potentials till Caleb is too strong with the scythe? Strong enought to kill them all? They needed this battle to get known to their enemy and to get known for the Potentials what it means to be a Slayer. I agree with you that the Potentials weren't good enough prepared for the fight.

And for the thing with Buffy and Faith: Why didn't the humans invented electricity earlier? Why didn't they developed smallpox vaccination earlier? Because noone had the idea till a special moment. 🙂 I think with Buffy and Faith it was the same.
