Sooner, or later someone's going to read # 5, so I ask...anyone have an opinion on the below?

Everyone's going to be talking about this now. Who's better, Paul Lee (artist for this issue) or Georges Jeanty (artist for the majority of the series, including the other four released issues and the upcoming 6-9)? Paul Lee's demons are better. Jeanty's Giles (not in Issue #2, but he improved in Issue #3) is better. Paul Lee's faces are more real looking, but too thin. Jeanty's faces are too chubby, but more fun. Lee's Andrew is leagues better. Jeanty's depiction of the world in quirkier, funner. Lee's is more realistic. I'm torn, but please feel free to leave comments about each artist. Who is better, Jeanty or Lee?

Well I can't say just yet. But I have really enjoyed Georges' covers. So for now I am going to say him. Both are great tho. Each has their own style.
 
I pick up my copies tomorrow, but from what I've seen on the net, the 2nd variant (diving into the crowd of demons) is the best yet.

The standard number 3 (Willow) is tough to beat though.
 
I think maybe Paul Lee's stuff is a little prettier, but I like Jeanty's playfulness, and all the little background suggestions on a page by page level. I think Jeanty gets Joss better than Lee. Nevertheless those last couple of pages of Issue # 5 by Lee were very affecting.

Oh no, you mean I have to open my Paul Lee variant? I didn't think it would be different inside, just the outside. Pooh, lol.
 
Oh...I see the confusion now. I'm pretty sure about the basics here, so I think I can offer an explanation.

Paul Lee and Georges Jeanty do what is called the pencils. Depending on which one might be working on a particular issue Joss would send him a script with descriptions of what he wants to see. The penciller then draws out pencil sketches for each page of the issue. These "pencils" go to the guy who does the inks for shading and such, then that passes to the guy who does the colors.

At least that's the way I understand it based on a kind of animated presentation of the process they offered up for Issue # 3. Sorry, I lost the link.

So Georges has been doing the pencils for each issue up until # 5. With # 5 however he took a break. Paul Lee took over for this issue.

And yes the pencilers have also been doing the variant covers. I assume it's the same process, but I'm not certain enough to state it as fact.

When I was at the comic shop, I noticed that Paul Lee's cover variant was in plastic, on board, and they were charging 6 bucks. Didn't even realize they shafted collectors right at the shop like that, heh. I got the Jo cover, standard price.

I actually liked the simplicity and clarity of Paul's panels. He's a concise storyteller, easy to follow. Giles looked weird. It did seem kinda generic compared to Georges distinct look.
 
Even though I haven't gotten The Chain yet, even from looking at the variant cover from Lee I can tell I like Georges better. I've just gotten used to him, so now to me he's ingrained in my memory like Jane Espenson or somebody. He seems like a "part of the team," while Paul Lee is kind of like the new kid.

That's my take on it.

I like both of their styles. I would be very pleased if they keep doing what they're doing now. Have Jeanty do the archs and then ask Lee for the one-shots; it's a nice change of pace.
 
i can't really choose. i like paul lee's cover on the #5 better than georges.. but then again i prefer georges over paul in other issues. they're really good at the styles they do and it's awesome to see all their new work.
 
I think i can't judge Paul Lee just yet seeing as he hasnt drawn Buffy or Xander which i think Georges does great. I think I'll make up my mind on this when Lee draws Dawn or Amy which are Georges weakest characters IMO.
But from comparison I think both artists are really good for Buffy, someone please look at the artists that do the IDW Angel, you just can't compare them to Georges or Paul!
 
ok well, I have to add, I got my comics yesterday, all three of them, and cover wise, I am most in love with the regular cover of issue 5. I mean out of all the covers I have, and so far I have them all (regular and variants). I think it is just plain beautiful. The art is amazing. And I dunno, that's it I guess. I can't say that I like Paul Lee better, but I am just saying that his 'cover' the regular one to me so far is best.
 
I was lucky enough to get the Chen cover and the Lee variant mailed to me (just not the other $14 variant). I do like Lee's style, the only thing I don't is his use of black outlines.. he tends to get a bit heavy with it sometimes, or is that the colourist doing that? Not sure how it works. It reminded me of the Tales of the Vampires comic with Dracula and Buffy.
Think I like Jeanty better.. most of the time anyway.
 
Well, I can show you partials as a quick reference, but the way they do it is much better.

I have to say I like Paul Lee much more. The cover for issue 5, really looked like Buffy. I also really enjoyed the look of his demons. I did not however like his Giles, no Grey hair. let's face it, the man is in the grey-haired stages of his life 😛. The vamp dusting is kind of lacking IMO..

I'll have to wait and see what Paul Lee does with Willow, Xander, etc before I make a 100% decision, but I like him the most so far.
