Hello All,

Long time no see. Your most favorite and hated Drunken Uncle here. Thought you had heard the last of me I'm sure. I'm posting this on any forum I have ever participated in with that hope that somebody will hear this message and maybe change their life because of it. If even one person pays attention and doesn't go through the pain my family is suffering, it will be worth it.

ADMIN feel free to move this to a more appropriate department if necessary.

My Post

I don't want to become a nag or a crazy person, so will be my one and only post on this subject. I am going to lose my father to cancer due to smoking. This is close to the lowest point in my life, and it all could have been avoided. I am furious that he smoked, that I smoke, that the whole family smokes, that I was addicted to this crap almost from birth, that cigarrettes even exist in our societies, that the industry does all it can to keep us addicted and to grab new customers (see the movie "The Insider.") And what do they do when first world societies reject their product and numerous people stop smoking or die off? They move to the third world and open up new markets for their poison there.

My father has lung cancer and bone cancer and I am on my way to Canada next week basically to say goodbye. There is no way to know how long he will be with us before this industry claims another victim.

Yes, we are all responsible for our own actions, I have heard all the arguements (usually from people who never developed the addiction or who weren't addicted to tobacco from birth without their consent) Nonetheless, there is no positive benefit from tobacco products and the only reason that Governments continue to allow this murderous product to exist is to line their pockets with tax dollars.

As for the families and owners of tabacco plantations and cigarrette factories - I honestly hope there is a special "HELL" for these folks.

PLEASE, IF YOU SMOKE OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO SMOKES - STOP NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! GET YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES TO STOP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! BE A POSITIVE EXAMPLE TO YOUR CHILDREN INSTEAD OF PASSING THIS HORRIBLE ADDICTION ON TO THEM! STOP NOW!

Once someone you love has cancer you are going to feel guilty that you didn't do more to get them to stop. DON'T WAIT! DO IT NOW!

Peace,

Uncle Rory
PS - Twilight is still garbage.

I am sorry to hear that your father is dying. Cancer is a painful way to lose a loved one.
Agreed. I have NEVER smoked, obviously 😀, and I never will. It kills. It tortures. It is disgusting to boot. Really.

In fact, I'm doing homework about the dangers of smoking right now as I type. 😀 Mostly featuring a woman with a hole in her neck from smoking, that CONTINUES to smoke THROUGH the hole in her neck. Just revolting, really. Everything about smoking is the biggest turn-off ever.

I agree that smoking is a choice, but I do feel sorry for those caught in the sticky web of nicotine. I'm sorry that you have to go through this, Uncle Rory. Just remember that we will ALWAYS be here for you or others if you ever want to talk. :grouphug:

So really, PLEASE you guys, don't smoke. Nothing good will EVER come of it. 🙂

This is sad, because my mom doesn't care. Everytime me and dad mention it, she says "Oh well, I gotta die from something."
Her mother even died from Cancer, but she just doesn't care about what will happen to her if she continues to smoke AT ALL.
My dad quit like 10 years ago...
and because of what my mom is doing to herself, I will NEVER smoke anything. I haven't even tried it, and I never want to.

I'm so sorry to hear this for you. 🙁 We're not friends, but this is sad and I am sorry you're having to go through it.

I watched my father in-law die of emphazema. I watched him slowly die for 4 days. Each breath he took was a fight and the doctor told me he was taking in an amount of air that would barely fill a popcan. He was nothing but grey skin and bone and I wish that a picture of him was on every cigarette package sold in the world because if you can look at that and not think twice then you either are uneducated or don't care about life.
Rory sorry for your loss and when you get to Canada ask them to immediately start giving your father morphine every 4 hours. It doesn't take away his pain but it will help him lull into that final deep sleep of relief.

I'm so deeply sorry to hear that Uncle Rory. Thats a tragic shame and I wish you and your family well during what must be a very traumatising period.

Speaking as an ex-smoker myself, I know how hard it can be to give up.

Addicted people cannot control their behaviour - thats the very definition of 'Addiction'.

Telling a smoker that all he has to do is just "stop smoking" is like telling a person suffering from depression that all they have to do is just "cheer up".

It's never that simple I'm afraid.

Peace.

That's a shame. I know how you feel, my mum has been smoking since a very early age and i know for a fact she'd never ever give it up. 🙁
Thankfully my big sis gave it up over a year and a half ago, because of her health and her bf pushed her to do it. Now she can actually breathe now. She had serious asthma problems and that +smoking was killing her. She'd have to get rushed to the hospital at least once a month. So glad she gave it up, she said it was the hardest thing ever though.
She had gotten this pill from the doctor to stop smoking, whenever she went to smoke or even when she could smell smoke she'd literally throw up. A little while after ,she fell pregnant, so she knew she could never ever go back to it. So in a way that helped too. 🙂

But so sorry to hear, ;(

Honeestly, as a smoker....what am I supposed to say to this?
What you think? You don't care and will continue smoking since it's your own body you destroy? You would like to stop but it's too hard? Let us know why you smoke and what you think of it. You think that you'll ever stop smoking?

Telling a smoker that all he has to do is just "stop smoking" is like telling a person suffering from depression that all they have to do is just "cheer up".

Absolutely agree. I will never preach to smokers to quit. I might discuss their habit but they do know it's dangerous. So there's no need for me to show it in their face everytime I get a chance. Showing a pic of people severly sick from smoking and asking if that is how they want to end up I might do if it is someone I really cared about. But just nagging people to stop will rarely help. Better chance of getting people annoyed at you. No one wants to be nagged at for what ever reason. This situation is not different. If yot a good strategy and it might be a good idea yes. But I won't get on everyone's back about it. I will however support everyone that wants to quit.

I don't smoke and I never have. Not even tried. My dad smoked on occasion when I was young and my older sister smoked for a while but stopped when she got pregnant. That gave her that extra motivation to quit. I really don't like the smell either which has resulted in me missing out on social situations, being in rooms filled with smoke is no fun. But that's just a choice I have to live with. And I can.

Well basically, I think every adult smoker (leaving kids out of this discussion) is aware of how dangerous smoking is. We've been preached the stories of what smoking does since elementary school. We all feel what a restraint it's putting on our respiratory system, and how unfit it makes us. But that's exactly the point, we know. And no matter how much good will a post like this has intended, it's no news.
So that's what I meant in my post.

As for you questions, I do plan to stop if I get pregnant. Other than that, it's just really hard. A lot of my close friends smoke. It's just part of what we do when we hang out, we all smoke. I guess this sounds all mundane to non-smokers, but that's actually something hard to get out of. I know that as long as I'm in this city, with these friends, there's no way I'm gonna quit smoking unless everybody does that. And most people wouldn't.

Thanks for your support. I will add that there is absolutely nothing worse than this. DEATH is the end, no going back. If you have to steal your friend's or family member's cigarrettes or break their damn arms so they can't smoke, do it. Burn down the store that sells the damn things whatever. Nag them to the point that they go crazy. Just do whatever you can to make them stop.

Thanks again,
Uncle Rory

I'm sorry for you and your family, I really am. But the post above I'll blame on the state your in at the moment. Your feelings are totally understandable but to me they had been over the line in a serious discussion. Now I see it as letting off steam.
