I think the sulking about not getting enough attention is the most annoying thing about Dawn because it was CONSTANT. She only threw 1 or 2 temper tantrums; she was ALWAYS grouchy about nobody paying attention to her or spending time with her.

Don't get me wrong, I think she had a genuine complaint, but for the love of God, girl, grow up!

Dawn's temper tantrums did always use to drive me insane and initially I took a disliking to the girl but I've grown to love her in a strange way.
And whenever I think along the same lines of what you guys were saying about how she should grow up,I kinda have to remind myself, yeah she looks teenagery but technically, in season 5 she was a newborn and so on and so forth. So she's got all the wonder and curiosity and childishness of a baby with all the hormones and moods of a teenager. It's a dangerous mix.
And I love any reference to Pre-Sunnydale Dawn (You know before Joyce and Buffy moved) because you get a glimpse of what Joyce and Buffy remember and well...little eight year old Dawn just seems so darn cute! That it's just hard not to love her just a little bit at least. I adore Little!Dawn, haha.
But yes, her tantrums were always a trial.And her whole 'no one pays attention to me' gig in later seasons did make me think 'okay,remember your sister and her friends are constantly fighting for their lives, not to mention Buffy just got sucked out of heaven. They haven't always got the freedom to ask how your day went'.
 
i love on the commentaries how they say that was all they used dawn for... her tantrums.. and oh look she's ran off again! LOL
 
at one point I wanted the RED Hell Bitch to snap Dawn's neck like a twig.

The scene with those two at the hospital made me want to hit the mute button.

She was a nice addition to the cast because by season 5 everyone had grown up and I feel that they needed someone a little younger in the mix also. They tried to do the same with Connor but him I started liking in season 5 of AtS.

I agree. WTF?! She has a sister? I'm sure that must have been the reaction they were hoping for. Can't stop watching now!! It was nice to have someone younger with a different view point there. But did they have to make her SOOOO annoying?! The first time I watched the episode where she screams like that I was blown away. she really got under my skin. But very true to how teenagers are. Michelle did a great job with it, in my opinion. If they wanted us to hate Dawn but be able to sympathize with her at the same time, they did it.

I think the whiney screaming of 'GET OUT! GET OUT GET OUT!' was really well done.
I remember when I was 14 I would scream and shout with my sister like that and cause my mum no end of grief. I think that's just how teenagers are and the people who say they're not obviously either haven't been teenagers for a while or were really good as teenagers.
But I do feel I relate to Dawn a lot as I also developed the same addiction as she did and know what that can be like.
 
Ok yeah Dawn is really annoying but all teenagers are, she had to be an annoying character to actually be a teenager, how many people do you know who went through their teenage years and did not have temper tantrums?
 
I don't mind Dawn, but that particular scene made me wish Buffy would have slapped her teeth down her throat. Ugh... I can't take screams from anyone, and especially a sullen teenager whose screams could pierce my eardrums.
 
Yeah i am also watching season five again, i just bought the complete series box set so i am watching them all over again. But season 5 so far has been my favorite. I think when the show first aired i stopped watching after season four until the last few episodes of season five so the episodes im watching now are like brand new to me. All of the others i have vague memories of what happens. Im Loving season five though.
 
The thing that confuses me we Dawn is, they had to have known they were creating an annoying character. You really had to fight to understand her, let alone connect with her. In fact, the only thing that really helps her connect with an audience is her age.
 
Lol I'm getting very tired and sick of the Dawn Hate, think back and wonder "did i ever have them teenage temper tantrums or moments?" and if you say "no" youre lying, you really are. yeah we all think "how annoying" because we see her through buffys eyes since weve been on her side since season 1 but imagine what its like for dawn. normal teenage emotion mixed in with demons and vampires and not been real.

Normal teenage emotion I can deal with. But why is it a question? Buffy in season 1, shes only 16, why is Dawn so pathetic at the same stage in life? Thats not an excuse. In real life, sure, even at 23 im gonna have my hissy fits, but it certainly doesnt make for a likeable TV character...it makes for annoying TV!

But in S1, Buffy had a calling, Buffy was an only child, Buffy was more mature than most girls her age.

Dawn is not Buffy. Dawn has grown up being coddled and babied, because she was the youngest. She was overprotected more so than most babies of the family because of the dangers this particular family had to face on a daily basis. Dawn had also grown up without the security of both parents for most of her life, as Buffy had. We can safely assume that after age 10, Dawn rarely saw her father, and pretty much spent critical pre-teen and early-teen years in a single-parent household. Dawn was a small child when confronted with her first demons and monsters, via her sister...she was not fifteen or sixteen as Buffy was, she was ten or eleven. We can't really compare Buffy and Dawn (though we might like to) because, although growing up in the same family, they've had totally different life experiences.

I mean, yes, she's annoying. Yes, she's immature. Yes, hearing her shriek and stamp around makes my blood boil. But there are viable reasons as to why she is this way.

Yeah sure it was like overreacting but I think it kind of fit her character.
Thinking about myself when I was a teenager I could get really pissed of as well. I guess it's natural stage for teenagers to feel like the worlds out to get them,
Growing up is confusing, let alone if you're a key 😛
 
I understand Dawn's reactions - didn't mean I found her any less annoying though. She did get alot better in S7 though and I loved her "you do sleep right?" speech to Spike!
 
Anyone else think it's really interesting when Glory, getting more in tuned with her human side, screams "Get out get out get out!" (three times, just like that) to Ben?
There are lots of parallels between Glory and Dawn, actually. Very neat to pick up on in S5.
