"Ghetto" Faith?

Just wondering, in the end of S7 of Buffy, Faith is a smoker, and talks like she's from the hood. Is this supposed to be because she was in jail, and that's the effect it's had on her, or was Eliza going through a phase, and that's just how her acting came out?

LOL, I have wondered this for a while now. Was it mentioned in the show at all?

I don't think it was mentioned but I do think that she could have easily picked that up. It's like when you visit people who speak another dialect than you do for a week or so and you pick up some of their speech habits, just because everyone around talks like that. I know I pick up some of the Hesse dialect when I visit friends there and I need about two to three days at home to fully get rid of that. Although, to be honest, I haven't really heard Faith talking differently in AS4/BS7. She always talked "dirtier" than the Scoobies, but I don't recall her talking "ghetto". Is it a somewhat subtle change only a native speaker would pick up?

As for the smoking, well, people pick up smoking all the time, jail's as bad a time as any. 😉

Well I mean, she talks differently from Season 3/4 of Buffy and Season 1 of Angel to Season 4 of Angel and Season 7 of Buffy. She talks like... I don't know, differently lol. Maybe it's not "ghetto" but I don't know how to explain it.

I always imagined Faith's stint in prison to be an all-female version of 'Oz', with her being the female equivalent of Chris Keller. 😛

I didn't notice really a difference in Faith's speech either... I don't think she ever talked "ghetto" but I defiantly thing it was trashy. I HATE it when people call someone by the first letter of their name. That's trashy IMO... so calling Buffy "B" always rubbed me the wrong way...

I think I remember reading somewhere that Eliza had some work done on her voice between Buffy S3/4 and Angel S4/BuffyS7- something to do with being trained to change the pitch otherwise she could have done herself some damage long term.

The smoking may have been a device to account for the change in story terms, but a lot of actors do pick up the habit (or did) because in screen acting it's almost inevitable that you have lots of breaks to line up shots, change lighting and other technical stuff and you need to keep yourself occupied. A lot of actors are crossword or trivia buffs for the same reason.

I didn't notice a difference, but if there were couldn't you put it to her growing up? We didn't get to see her growing up as gradually as we did the others, so that might be why you may notice a difference. I don't know.

OH! Yes, I remember I heard (read, more likely) too. I think she was trained by a voice actor to speak on a higher pitch, because her "normal" raspy tone was really bad for her vocal chords. But I still don't think I've heard a difference. Maybe I should watch some S3 episodes back to back with S7.

I know exactly what you mean about the way she speaks changing, and I agree completely (this does not have to do with her voice being higher or anything). My mind is instantly drawn to this exchange between her and Principal Wood:

Faith: Guy looks at me, let's just say his priorities... shift.
Robin: Why, because you're so hot?
Faith: Is what it is, yo.
Robin: Oh, please! I am so much prettier than you are. Oh, and, uh, for the record, our little encounter didn't exactly change my world.
Faith: [stops grinning] You're trippin'! That was rock 'em, sock 'em!
Robin: No, no, no, no! It was, it was nice enough, you know, and-and you're, you're very, um, um, enthused, and, I think with a little more experience, you"”

Oh! And her line in Chosen seems off to me too:

Faith: I just want to sleep, yo, for like a week!

But yeah, I think her word choice and everything could certainly have been affected by her time in jail. What really annoyed me is that even in Season 7, she didn't always talk like this; sometimes she sounded like her old self! Is that what you meant?

I don't think she speaks "ghetto" or something like that in S7. If she does, it's not much different from S3/S4. But her voice really changed from S3/S4. It's more raspy? And her attitude is less girly. In S3/S4, she sometimes sways her hips when she walks. But in S7, she walks like a gangsta. I think I notice these details too much. (sw)

I didn't see her talking as ghetto or hood. I been in the hood lol Faith talks nothing like that. She did have a bit more of a slang though. But when you are around people you pick it up so it makes sense that she got the new accent whatever from jail.

I didn't notice her being overly "ghetto". I just figured the slight differences in her attitude were influences on her from prison. After all, I'm sure being locked up with that many hardcore women would have a profound effect on someone.

I had grunge punk friends when I was in my teens who talked like that "yo" and "trippin'" etc. That being said, these were all siblings in a family that was pretty poor and the mother and the oldest two kids (bro and sis respectively) had both at least been to jail once. And I would get in the habit that when I hung out with my friend, especially with her friends or her older brother around, I started speaking that way. The second I got home from hanging out, normal Jana speak. It's HIGHLY likely that Faith picked up some extra slang in jail, and some people can't turn a new dialect or whatever off.
