Giles and Buffy: Too Close for Comfort

Giles did kinda "attack" Buffy at first, but I think it was kinda needed...
Buffy was trying to run away from her "job"

I never thought Giles himself was icky at all! I just thought he was a little too close to her, for him being a teacher. 🙂

And LMAO@ I'll watch it again, but I'm sure there was no ick in my mind. The Spike scene? Well, that's another issue... (and word - ick is NOT what I think of when I see that! )

I've just begun watching the first season again, I actually just this minute finished "The Harvest" and I don't get any kind of weird feeling from the relationship between Buffy and Giles. The way I think of it is, she's a new girl in town, not even just a new school, she has no current friends within range, so what else is she supposed to do. I know when I'm in a similar situation I sort of leech to the people who accept me. I think it plays a natural, sort of primitive instinct to connect. Plus, Giles is said to be new as well, so it's almost inevitable. Another reason that justifies their closeness is the absence of a father in Buffy's life and the absence of a child in Giles'.

I never thought the relationship between Giles and Buffy was 'weird' or 'gross' at all. But if I was to take that perspective, I think Joss can and did justify their bond.

I never noticed any of this icky-ness. I see Giles as too innocent to be interested in Buffy that way, and like clem said, Buffy was leeching to the people that accepted her. I can understand it being Season 1 and if it was your first time watching it it does seem a little strange, a middle-aged, English librarian following a young, blonde school girl around. But fast-forward 6 years, and they're probably two of the most well bonded characters in the show, there's so much to them.

Personally I never found their relationship creepy. I think Anthony Stewart Head just overacted a wee bit during the first season. Otherwise I love their relationsip. He is so the father she did not really have and he helped her to overcome so much. Personally I love Giles anyway. Great character.

I was rewatching my Season 1 DVDs and listening to Joss' commentary on "Welcome to the Hellmouth" the other day and couldn't help but laugh when he made the comment about Giles being way too close and invading Buffy's personal space during that scene when he's got her up against the wall in the hallway, telling her "There's a reason why you're here and there's a reason why it's now", and then again when he comes over her shoulder in The Bronze's balcony scene. I laughed because I remember thinking the same thing the first time I saw that episode: "Eww... The old guy is wayyyy creepy!" LOL

Any thoughts or comments on this? Anybody out there ever think it would have been interesting if Giles and Buffy had ever had a thing? Or does the thought of it make you want to blow chunks?

No offense, but that is the most revolting thing I could ever imagine.

EWWWWWW.

I mean, Giles is like her father.

Nope... too creepy. It's a father/daughter relationship no matter what rifts are between them. My take on the 'closeness' in season one is that Giles really has never dealt with a teenager before.. .and a teen girl, at that. It took him time to figure out how to communicate with her and get his points across without being a creepy old man. 🙂

LOL Good point. :D
Well I never thought that Tony & Sarah gave off that vibe, but you'd think think that everyone in Sunnydale would have thought that Giles was molesting Buffy.

I mean, what outsiders would see would have been a 16 year old girl that cuts most of her High School classes to spend time alone in a library with a middle-aged man, and after their "training sessions" she leaves the library all sweaty, tired and out of breath. lol.

Anyway, it never would have worked, Giles is waaay too young for Buffy, if a guy is under 100, it's a big turn off for her.

LMFAO!!! Oh yeah, you KNOW all the students at the school outside the Scoobies were thinkin' they were having a hot and sexy affair. But my response would still be EW, even though Tony is soo adorable.

LMAO, yep you're so right, to an unknowing bystander thats exactly what it woulda looked like :)
I don't think they are attracted to each other, and have never seen any signs of it, except for Spike making a comment about it in Season 6(Buffy: 'You know I was thinking of Giles while we were kissing'. Spike:'I've always wondered about you two.'). I think they make great mentor mentor...ee? And maybe if they had more in common they could be friends, but for now, I don't see it happening. But it's not impossible or gross.

I don't really saw the ickyness in their relationship either. However, I saw season 6 before season 1, so the scene on the balcony in the Bronze did give me a bit of a weird vibe. But that's really the only time, and then only because I still had the Buffy/Spike scene in the back of my head. I think that ASH did a great job in playing Giles as not being quite sure how to handle his new Slayer.

Although things like that could happen in real life, I don't think it would have been a good thing for the show. I mean, I see Giles as being Buffy's father figure. Them having any other kind of relationship would just be pretty creepy, to be honest. It's his job to protect her, and he ends up caring about her, as if she was his daughter. I don't see it as anything more than that.

It wouldn't happen. It COULDN'T happen. I mean think even in S1 when no one had really estabilished a relationship with Giles, it still couldn't have happened.

I laugh when I think of it happening though. 🙂

LOL Why? You wouldn't be grossed out? You'd just think it was crazy? LOL

I don't know... I have given this more thought over the last few weeks as I've watched the seasons over again and I think that IF the writers ever decided to make it happen (which I don't think they ever will, since Giles has always been the father figure for Buffy), IF they did... I would probably be grossed out at first, 'cause I know their history, but at the same time it would be really nice to see someone who knows everything about Buffy and what she's gone through, and loves her so much. You know if it ever did happen we would never have to worry about Buffy being mistreated by her man again!

I laugh because it's inane to think they ever would do that. I think. lol

I mean c'mon it might be down to the writers but over all Buffy as a charachter would never go for Giles, like really never. None of then would. Apart from that Giles wipes his glasses to prevent him from seeing the Scoobies lust. Doubtful he'd want to engage with them . 😛

I think the closest the writers would get to placing Jeeves in ANY loved up situation with the Scoobies would have been in Tabula Rasa.

Agreed. Plus even Buffy comments on it by saying at the Bronze to him "Hanging with the students...isn't that kind of skanky?"

I imagine Joyce's reaction would be pretty priceless. She'd have to get that axe back from School Hard. 😀

Yeah but Angel and Spike are still technically young. In both the looks and in the head.

Giles is a walking dictionary.
