Giles and the Acathla binding spell

Okay, I have a question about this:

I can't remember the episode, but it's one from early S3 where Giles is trying to find a binding spell for Acathla. All through the ep, he's trying to get details about it from Buffy, and then, at the end when she finally tells him that Angel had a soul, when Willow offers to help, he does a weird half smile and tells her there is no such spell.

Now, I'm just wondering: was there ever really a spell, and Giles wanted to get Buffy to confess that Angel had a soul when she killed him, or was there no spell because it couldnt work, due to the fact that Angel had a soul?

Just curious.

There was no spel. Giles knew Buffy needed to talk about it to make herself better and this is how he got her to talk.

He didnt know what was wrong but he knew something was and he knew it was about that night.

What puzzles me is why didn't he bring up the idea when the demon was active or was going to be..? Acathla was defeated so she'd bound to smell a rat 😀

Because there is no such spell, as Wicked said it was just to get Buffy to talk about it. And as far as Buffy knows they did do a spell the seal acathla.

I think this episode was "Faith, Hope, and Trick". I thought this was a huge step showing how Giles had a father's love for Buffy. He knew she would feel better if she confessed everything about how she had to kill Angel. She kept it in for so long and she finally got it out in the open. Of course, then she goes and puts the ring down in the mansion and Angel comes back at the end of the episode.
