Giles' Glasses

As I rewatch key episodes of the series, I'm beginning to slowly notice something very crucial about Giles and his glasses...

It would seem that when Giles is wearing his glasses, he is acting as Buffy's Watcher. But once he removes them, he crosses over into father territory.

I know this isn't perfect, and have even found instances where it doesn't exactly ring true, but a lot of the key dramatic moments follow this. I was just curious if anybody else had noticed this, or disagree completely.

I'm not sure I've ever really thought about it, but now that you mention it, yes, this does seem to be the case. Nice observation!
 
I always saw the glass polishing thing as a deliberate device that Giles used to stall for time before making some sort of difficult decision or just to regain control when he was about to explode all over Buffy or one of the Scoobies.
 
Wow, good catch! I never really caught that before, but once I think about it, you're totally right... It's a nice way for the writers to symbolically show the difference between Giles' roles in Buffy's life.
