How do you guys feel about Giles and Joyce getting together? How do you see its impact on Giles's relationship with Buffy?

I couldn't see it happening as i think they are far to similar, not that that is always a bad thing, but i think that it would be more of a conflict than a relationship. I suppose for a better term Joyce is as much Buffy's 'Watcher' as what Giles is, which would lead to conflicts, while Giles cares about her an awful lot, Joyce & Giles both have Buffy in very different worlds, Joyce wants her to have a 'normal' life or as close as, and obviously Giles cares about her, but first and formost to him she is still the Slayer, even if they have the 'father/daughter' bond between them.

As for just Joyce and Giles i think they could probably hit it off as a couple as Joyce is probably more on Giles's page in terms of maturity etc. But having said that, i think after Jenny, you just can't see Giles with anyone else.

I think they'd be good for a while, but then they'd argue a lot about Buffy. Giles pushes Buffy awfully hard, and Joyce wishes this weren't her daughter's duty. I think she may start to resent all the time Giles spends with Buffy, and how hard he pushes her. Plus, he gets to share in this huge part of her life, and the one time Joyce tries to, she discovered those dead kids... Yeah, they were some ancient Hansel and Gretel demon, but still.

I agree that there's a lot of potential there, but that practically speaking it probably wouldn't have worked out. Buffy's calling would likely have presented a real problem for them. But given different circumstances, maybe! I think there was certainly a lot of mutual attraction and respect, there, (and not just in Band Candy!)

When Giles listens to Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses" in The Body after Joyce's death, (as they had together in Band Candy), it is just heartbreaking. And I think, quite telling, about the admiration that was there.

Part of me wanted them to get together, they were both single and in the same age range and they obvioulsy liked each other, well their younger selves did lol
but I do think Buffy would have been weirded out for quite a while by it :S

I always wanted it to happen so that the characters would have some happiness for a while. Especially Giles.

So yeah, I love the idea of it a lot. But then I'm afraid it wouldn't have worked as well in execution. If that makes sense.

I'm sure Buffy would take a little time to get over it. lol

I like the idea of them together. I remember watching Restless with my friend and she asked if they were a couple when Giles reached over Joyce's arm to eat some of her popcorn. They would have made a lovely couple.

I really enjoyed them being on teenifying candy together. Then again, that's one of the very, very few times I like Joyce at all, so no wonder. 😉

I wouldn't have liked Giles starting a ship with "sober" Joyce, he's way too good a catch to be wasted on her, IMO. 😛

I agree :D
Ooo...I adore this ship. 🙂

From the get-go, I liked them as friends. I know they never had much interaction, but I liked to imagine that behind the scenes they were meeting to have tea and talk about Buffy. When she expresses her sympathy over Jenny's death and offers help if he needs anything during the hospital scene in Killed By Death, she won me over as a character. Honestly I'd be perfectly happy with them just getting along as friends, but I like the thought of them together in a romantic sense as well.

I imagine they met a few times over the summer between seasons 2 and 3, before she lashed out at him and blamed him for Buffy's leaving. I do like to think that at some point she apologized, but it's not known whether or not she ever did. When he shows up to remove the cat in Dead Man's Party, there's a little bit of awkward tension between them, but they seem to mostly be okay around each other. He comments on the mask, trying to make polite conversation (and that's another reason I like them together...they share some similar interests, I bet, since he's into ancient cultures and what not and she owns an art gallery that often deals in primitive art).

Then Band Candy. You'll never convince me that there wasn't at the very least a basic physical attraction between them that led to them pairing up while "under the influence." I've heard it said that Giles as Ripper was interested in anything female and willing, and Joyce was definitely willing, and while that may be a part of it...I also think they acted much too sweet around each other to just be after a quick shag. He was so adorably protective of her, even while being a "bad boy." He could've just skipped off and found anyone else after the police car episode, but he didn't, he stuck by her, stood up for her, and sweetly reassured her. All those little kisses...awww.

The awkwardness afterward didn't seem to be "regret" to me so much as just plain old embarrassment. I'm sure they thought the other regretted it, and I don't know if they ever even talked about it.

But, at some point, that awkwardness just disappeared. We don't really see them together much at all really until "Restless," and they suddenly seem to be on perfectly friendly terms. He's all "sure you won't join us?" and snatching popcorn from the bowl she's carrying, and she smiles back at him, and the first time I watched it I was thinking "wait, where did this sudden chumminess come from?" And then the flashback Christmas dinner scene we get in "The Body" had them kidding around with each other...almost flirting, even. They seemed to have gotten over their awkwardness and moved on, and that's the time period that I actually ship them in. Season 5.

While I agree that it would've made things odd with Buffy, especially when she was still in high school, I think shipping them later on would've done away with that issue. Because in season 5 we have Dawn, and Dawn represents both of Buffy's lives - the slaying and the home life. I could understand it being weird to try to combine those two facets of her life earlier on, but with Dawn already complicating things in her life, and with Buffy and Giles mostly operating independently from the Council, I don't see how a romance between her Watcher and her mother would really be that big of a thing. Especially since Buffy was away at college most of the time and not really giving either of them much time. Of course, this only works if "The Body" never happened. *sigh*

The main thing I can see against it (other than that they probably didn't actually want a relationship since we never had that clearly spelled out either way and they obviously didn't pursue it) is that Giles is responsible for making sure Buffy does her job. A very dangerous job that could potentially get her killed. I could see Joyce having a problem with that, even though she'd accepted Buffy's role as the slayer. I know she respected him, and trusted him, and thought of him as a friend of the family, more or less, but a deeper romantic bond might complicate things if Buffy had to do something really dangerous and Joyce knew he was encouraging her to do so because of their responsibility to their roles.

As far as Jenny goes...my personal feelings are conflicted a bit. I love both ships equally. Obviously Jenny was canon, and Joyce wasn't, but I still enjoy both. Honestly, had Jenny never died, I would NEVER ship Giles/Joyce as anything but friends. Because when a character is "taken," anyone else isn't even an option for me. I like canon. I don't like making characters "cheat."

I would've been really happy - ecstatic even - if Jenny hadn't died. But she did, sadly. And I feel that it's a bit unfair to Giles to never allow him to move on from that. Their relationship was brief and tumultuous, and definitely had its problems. They should've had a chance to move on and be amazing, but JOSS RIPPED IT AWAY FROM THEM. grrrrrrrrrr.
Sorry. Bit distracted there. But, my point is, Jenny probably wasn't the first woman Giles loved. It doesn't seem likely, or fair, that she would be the last. He certainly should've had a period of grieving, of course, but he's not the type to dwell on the past. In his life he's probably had to move on a lot. Probably seen a lot of awful things and dealt with a lot of pain. It seems like unnecessary torture to the poor man to never let him have happiness again. But, that's just my two cents.

But if you ask me to choose who I'd rather hadn't died? I honestly couldn't do it! My brain might explode if I tried!

Aaaaaand so, this has been a very long essay on why I ship this and in what ways. Sorry, I'm a very wordy person sometimes. Or all the time. 🙂
