Although that was what he was saying, I think after Buffy said what she said, he changed his mind, not because he was afraid of dying, but because he understood what it would do to Buffy.

I am always astounded when people think Buffy should do whatever it takes to save the world without regard to people in her inner circle. Buffy is motivated by the connections she has to the world, and that's what makes her different from other Slayers. We got a glimpse of who she would have been without those connections in "The Wish." I know that a lot of people think she shouuld make those sacrifices for the entire world, and I guess they are right, but I understand why Buffy doesn't make them.

This gets me thinking. Buffy had no choice in "Becoming P2," so she had to kill Angel. He was a big part of her world and unless she had no other choice, she probably wouldn't have done it. But what if Buffy couldn't do it? What if Giles hadn't been so tortured? Could he have done it for her so that she wouldn't suffer the guilt of killing her true love?
 
I think he would have killed Dawn. He was all set for killing her before the big battle.
 
But then Buffy could either be really angry at him or understand that it had to be done... Then again, Dawn knew about the ritual and was willing to jump... so maybe Giles didn't have to kill Dawn.

I agree with Allycat, i think that if Giles would have gotten there before Buffy, he would have killed Dawn. He killed Ben, who was an innocent, why not Dawn?

I don't think Giles would have killed Dawn. Dawn means a lot to Buffy, she just lost her mother, Giles wouldn't want to see Buffy hurt anymore than she already is. He loved Buffy like a daughter. I don't see Giles killing some one who means a lot to Buffy.
 
Giles might have wanted Dawn to die because of the whole key thing but I dont think he would have done it himself!
 
If Giles had to, he would kill Dawn, as he killed Ben. He was in a horrible position. But he would have killed her.

He would definitly have done it himself, who else was to do it?
