Give a critical comparison between a traditional version of a well-known fairy tale and a modern adaptation of it (book, film/video, or computer game).
Ok, so I am currently in my third year of an English degree, and I am doing a module in children's literature. I have decided to tackle the above question for my assignment, and I originally wanted to use the gentleman fairytale that Joss created for the show, but as it's not an adaptation of a specific fairytale then I've been told that I'm not allowed.
However, at this point I had become so excited about combining Buffy with my education that I refuse to be deterred. Instead I am going to do a comparison between Buffy's 'Gingerbread' and the Grimm version of the same fairytale.
I was thinking of doing a little comparison between the two in terms of plot and structure, which means I can describe 'Gingerbread' without sounding like I'm describing it.
But, I want to focus on the overall 'message' of each story, basically comparing what the original intended to say, and what the adaptation intends to say.
I've created this thread to try and get some ideas from people, who may know more than me, but also so that I can post my ideas and get feedback from people as I'm going along. I always find it helpful to discuss my assignments with friends whilst I'm doing it, but none of my friends have both literary and buffy interests, so I though the boards would be a better alternative 🙂
