Glenn Quinn Died?

This should show you how much I pay attention. I had no idea Glenn had died in 2002. I am so pissed. He is such an idiot to overdose on drugs. Let alone be doing them. I like him a lot. He was a great actor (I think.) And I'm adding him to my list of people I'm going to slap when I die. Along with Heath Ledger. God! Doing drugs! Idiot!



Okay, I'm done ranting. I think that was a rant.

I don't think so. Joss had planned to off the character half way through from the get go.
 
I've heard both of those things before (that his drug use got him kicked off the show and that Joss planned to kill him from the beginning). Frankly, to me it seems like the drug use probably did get him kicked off the show. The "I planned to kill him from the start" thing just sounds like Joss not mentioning the real reason for him leaving out of respect. It just doesn't make sense to me to kill off the only original character a spinoff has just nine episodes into the series. It would have been more powerful at the end of the season had it really been Joss's plan.
 
Yeah, I was really sad when I first found out he died. (I was browsing IMDb @ like 3am a few years ago)

I'm a huge Roseanne fan, so that really sucked. 🙁

How would it have been more powerful?

If we go back to the first season of Buffy, Joss' initial plan was to have Jesse in the opening credits and then kill him off, but budget wouldn't allow it.

I think it is far more 'powerful' to show the audience that in he world of Angel nothing is a certainty, that people die, there is no time stamp on anyone.
If you kill a character at the end of the season, thats almost obvious but killing someone when the viewer least expects it, well thats where you create magic.

Joss has constantly and consistently stated he wanted to kill off a main character early on just so the viewer learns thatin this world anything can happen.

If Joss ever intended to bring him back, we will see him in the comics.
 
Because they'd just barely begun to develop the character. Giving him more time on the show would have made it more heartbreaking. Its one thing to kill a character in the first episode (like Jesse) but nine episodes into a spinoff that was still struggling to find its footing at the time? Come on. I really just find it hard to believe that some outside factor didn't influence the killing Doyle decision. It might not have been the drugs, but there's more to it than Joss would have us believe.

Because you know what Joss thinks?
The ending of Hero couldn't have been more heartbreaking if Doyle had been on the show 5 more episodes or 5 years.
Joss Whedon has always bucked the trend, he likes to take gambles and make, what seem like, unpopular decisions.
So of all the times he has done that, why would be be different this time?

I often believe I am correct in my opinion because I have generally read enough to hold my argument but this time I am absolutely sure you're wrong on this one because its typical Whedon backed up with comments on what he planned and I have no reason to not take his word on this.
 
Regardless of whether or not it was what got Glenn booted from "Angel", the whole story is a sad one. I loved Glenn on "Roseanne" and on "Angel", and I was heartbroken when Joss decided to kill Doyle off. 🙁 I loved his chemistry with Charisma, and was waiting for the magical moment and when it finally came it was right before Doyle sacrificed himself... It couldn't have been more bittersweet. I thought it was a brilliant move on Joss' part, even though I was sad that it had to be done. And then when I found out about Glenn, my heart felt so heavy. You never like to hear of someone who OD's, but especially someone who was a vital part of the Buffyverse... It really hit me hard. I felt like I'd kind of lost a friend.
Rest in peace, Glenn... You are missed.

But I guess it doesn't strike me the same way it does you. It doesn't seem like a planned decision. Mainly because Angel season one doesn't seem like they have a plan yet. It really seems like Joss was trying to figure things out until the very end of the season.
 
When I saw him dying in Angel I was very sad and because of that I searched for Glenn Quinn on the internet. And when I found out that the actor died as well I got really sad and at the same time angry because of the reason he died... I just can't understand why some people have to use drugs to feel good. I mean if you have real problems the only usable way is to face them and find a solution. Family and Friends and also the psychiatrist will do everything to help (ordinary... if not then okay, that's really bad but there are better ways then taking drugs!!)

It doesn't seem like a planned decision, from a show where the guy in charge is known to plan everything well in advance?
The concept of season 1 was always to be the Film Noir Detective story, if you visit this genre you will not be surprised by any of it.

Also, it seems perfectly planned.

Angel was just building himself a life, a group of reliable friends and boom, he's knocked back down. This plays on him and his place perfectly.

And lets not forget LA. We're supposed to be lost and disjointed, alone and left wondering our next move because Joss pretty much tells us all that in the text.

Drug use isn't as black and white as you seem to see it nor is it as clear cut on how to get yourself away from it.
Some drug users can argue that the using of drugs is perfectly fine and has no effect on them.

I'm not condoning the use of drugs, I'm just saying your POV is very young, naive and isn't as easy as what you think.

I know tons of people who do drugs (though admitedly most of those people do 'harmless' drugs like Marijuana), and I don't think anyone does it to get away from problems. It's more about having fun and chilling. And if you use those drugs (again, the Marijuana) for that purpose only and don't overdo it, you usually also don't get addicted and need help. Of course we're all gonna die of lung cancer later, but that's a different issue.
Like I said this is only about 'harmless' drugs, and I agree that serious drugs are a lot more problematic (apparently there are drugs that can make you addicted by one usage already, like heroin or crystal meth), but like EB already said, I think it's wrong to see this whole opic just in black and white.

i know exactly how you feel.. When I first watched ep. 9 i was like "omg.. that cant be! :S" so i went to the internet and searched if he trully died.. [in the show] then i see a web page "RIP glenn quinn".. omg i couldnt believe it :S and when i found he died because he had an overdose .. ::huh1:: i can't believe how stupid he was.. doyle was one of my fav characters.. findin out a character is dead is bad.. but that the actor is dead too?? :'(

I think Joss pretty much said recently that he did plan to kill Doyle off from day one, but it got pushed ahead because Glenn's drug problem made it difficult to work with him.

I imagine it must have been pretty hard on David Boreanaz, because supposedly the only Buffyverse actors he was really friendly with outside of work were Glenn Quinn, Nicholas Brendon and Christian Kane, Quinn being the one he was seen with most. I laughed a little when he and Marsters were doing the Angel Season 5 press junket and on MTV Boreanaz said that he and Marsters don't socialize outside of work--seemed a little harsh, lol.

Yeah it sucks that Quinn died, it's unfortunate because he seemed like a nice talented guy, and apparantly the original plan was for Doyle to be the Big Bad in Season 4...

Ha Ha Spike and Angel really do dislike each other! The character of Doyle was such a well rounded kinda guy and good for the brooding Angel. Its a shame about Glenn Quinn.

Slapping is not always the cure. Listening and being understanding goes a long way. How do you know that he was an idiot to overdose? Even intelligent people have weak moments.
