There was this programme on the TV last night about how TV ads can promote viewer knowledge of products. In a segment two TV ad makers are put against two ad makers from another company, they are given tasks each week. One such task was promoting Bhagdad as a tourist destination. Last night they had to make an ad promoting Global Warming

1/
A view of the Robin sat in a tree in winter, ice and snow everywhere. The voice over declared the birds plight. Of how it searched for food to feed its young during the long, cold, months of winter. BUT The humans are coming to its rescue, help is on the way. By leaving your lights on, and using more power, the global warming would bring fewer winter months and help the Robin feed its young.

2/
The second ad highlighted the struggle of the homeless, battling the elements, surviving the cold nights. Help was at hand, as by using your car where-ever possible, using as much oil as you possibly could, the cold nights would get shorter, help those poor homeless people.

Have you got any other ideas ?

Haha I saw that, love that show!
3. Global warming kills polar bears so more penguins can live 😉

actually i didnt know that so im gonna go with seals instead of penguins 😛

. . . You DO know that polar bears and penguins live on opposite ends of the globe?
damn zoo shouldnt have put the polar bear exhibit right next to the penguins. confuses me to much 😉

So the Polar bears had gone on holiday? and stayed there.
I'd lose that competition big time. In fact I'd be bounced out on my ear.

My ad would encourage viewers to investigate the facts.

It makes sense don't you think. There's this problem. Go out and investigate the facts.

The problem is if anybody actually did that they'd discover what's becoming more evident with each passing day. Global warming is a massive swindle. It's a hoax, a fraud, a lie.

Then what's killing the polar bears? Aren't they on the endangered species list now?

They're not on the endangered species list, but they are on some sort of protection list. BUT there are still plenty enough polar bears for them to NOT count as an endangered species. It's just a thing to try to keep us from drilling in ANWR (even though the bears don't live anywhere near ANWR).

Your comment on post no: 8, I'd go with your second thought.
Damned Polar bears!.
So they're not on the endangered species list.

There used to be a problem, but that was because they hadn't had a head count, so the penguins got together and started breaking up the ice, ( some-one thought it was global warming ) on the thin ice they danced to break it. That's how we got the film Happy Feet.
So, eventually all the polar bears lived in a small place, and then they could be counted, hence, they are not endangered.
It's a good thing they don't live at the north and south poles, cos then they'd be disabled...

Bi-Polar Bears. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Then what's killing the polar bears?

The overall polar bear population has quadrupled since 1972.

OK, I'm not going to BS you. I don't know where that guy got that figure from, but going by the figures you can find in more scientific studies the polar bear population has at least doubled, and perhaps as much as quadrupled in the last 50 or so years.

In one of the studies listed on that page - the one by Canadian biologist Dr. Mitchell Taylor - you'll find this...

“Of the 13 populations of polar bears in Canada, 11 are stable or increasing in number. They are not going extinct, or even appear to be affected at present,” Taylor said. “It is just silly to predict the demise of polar bears in 25 years based on media-assisted hysteria.”

Aren't they on the endangered species list now?

"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service accepted a proposal last December to designate polar bears as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act". So how did that happen? How did a species growing in population get on the American endangered species list? Good question.

What happened was the arctic was going through one of it's warming cycles. It happens. There are possible natural explanations. It happens regardless of what man does to the environment. The Polar bear has been around for a long time. Recently a Polar bear jaw was found which was 130,000 years old. During that time there have been periods when the arctic has been as warm or warmer than during the recent arctic warming.

OK, but the thing is there was a recent arctic warming. The Arctic ice melt last year was freakishly large. I imagine you heard about how last year's melt was the largest in the satellite record (since 1979). I doubt you would have heard this though. The ice refroze. Also the largest, quickest such event in the satellite record. We were told this "new" ice was going to melt quickly due to being thin though. Guess what? It didn't. Currently the arctic is cooling from last year. Is it entering a cooling cycle? Some say perhaps.

Oh, but back to the polar bears. So it's 2007. The mainstream media has been blasting reports on all channels about the record polar ice melt of 2007. In 2005, or 2006 (I forget exactly when) some organization petitioned the American government to have the polar bear put on the endangered species list due to loss of habitat. Studies were put forward appearing to show the bears were in imminent danger. You no doubt heard about those ones. They, of course were blasted all over the media. The one you wouldn't have heard about was the one which critiqued those others as bad science.

Nevertheless the Bush administration was now in a twitchy predicament. The bear you see had now become a kind of icon in the public's eye signifying bad environmental policy.

That most likely began with Al Gore. Do you remember the little animated polar bear cub swimming for its cuddly life in Gore's quote, unquote documentary, An Inconvenient Truth?

There was also this. Ever seen this one? It's quite well-known.

bear071207_600x495.jpg

Al gore used it as a symbol of global warming. The truth is Gore ripped that pic off from a grad student who took it off the bow of a tour boat she was on as part of a school thing, one summer. The bears had swum out from the shore to play around out there. It's a fascinating story. Here's a link.

Enviromental Etremists Manipulate Masses

Meanwhile...there's President Bush. His administration is in danger of being tagged as butchers of the environment. He's got studies saying "poor, cuddly, polar bears". He's got other studies debunking the first ones as laughably, bad science. The cuddly polar bear studies got broad media play. The studies which revealed the first as bad science got crickets. What does he do? He's got another problem.

He knows these eco warriors don't really give a damn about the polar bears. That's not what it's really about. The history of such things has shown what enviros really want to do is get the polar bear on the endangered species list, then use that status as leverage to shut down energy production in the United States. Don't think they'd do it? Don't think they wanted to? You haven't been paying attention. Bush, however, was paying attention, so what he did was he allowed the polar bear status as threatened on the endangered species list, but added a caveat. That status could not be used as legal cause in any lawsuit. So what you had was a bit of toothless legislation, which appeared to represent the polar bears, but gave the enviro-nuts no real clout to make use of it. The greenies hated it, but there was nothing they could do. They'd been out-maneuvered.

So there you go. The answer to your question, why are polar bears on the American endangered species list.

F
Fake Shemp
yeah i'd read that he had nicked the pic too, documentaries cant be without bias and screwing around with the facts
I am one of "Those Nuts" who believe in global warming & what it is doing to our planet; although mankind is not RESPONSIBLE for the entirety of global warming, he is charged with helping reduce the crap that adds to it. And there's plenty of things everyone can do to make the situation better.

That being said...

According to Newsweek, May 15, 2008 edition: Polar bears are NOT on the "endangered species" list. They ARE on the THREATENED species list. Because if something is not done to help maintain the polar bear species as it is NOW, within 50 years they will BECOME endangered.

From the article:
"There are two main provisions of the ESA that are relevant. One requires that all federal agencies in all actions they carry out do not jeopardize the continued existence of the species or destroy or adversely modify its critical habitat. That applies equally to threatened and endangered species, and that's the provision where an activity like oil drilling in habitat has to go through a process to determine whether it will destroy the species. If so, it cannot occur. A threatened species doesn't have that. If it were endangered, any given project, including off-shore drilling in bear habitats, would have to go through an Endangered Species Act process, which would either stop that activity or at least provide mitigations and measures to reduce the harm to the bear."

You saw this in the post above, right?

"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service accepted a proposal last December to designate polar bears as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act"
.

I don't see anything really contradictory there.

Also I don't know if you bothered to read that lengthy post above yours, but you may have picked up a certain disdain for the mainstream media. If not I'll spell it out for you.

I suggest much of what you read, and see in the mainstream media concerning the global warming issue in particular is chicken little, agitprop journalism showing only cursory attention to fact checking. Newsweek in particular is oft-critiqued for this. Here's an example.

Coyote Blog: Storm Frequency

Because if something is not done to help maintain the polar bear species as it is NOW, within 50 years they will BECOME endangered.

Now I don't know if that idea came from Newsweek, or not, but there's no hard, real world, science supporting what it appears to be suggesting.

Did you just hear a challenge there? If not I'll stop being subtle. If you have a link to hard, real world science supporting the idea the Polar Bears are in danger of extinction (which let's be honest, that's what we're really talking about) as a result of suggested, human caused, global warming produce it.

I'll even help you along. Google "Stirling Polar Bear". He's an actual scientist, and he's on your side.

Buffanator agrees: Actually, I work with a buttload of scientists & have learned a great deal from them. I don't believe ''everything I read'' or ''everything I hear'' - I also take into consideration my surroundings, experiences, & personal beliefs. EOR

Cool, then you shouldn't have any problem linking me to some hard, real world science (not modeling) offering scientific support for the idea human-caused global warming is leading us inevitably to a catastrophe. Personally, I don't think smoking gun evidence exists, and it's necessary if you're going to restructure world economy in a way that creates human misery and even death. Right now we're starving and energy depriving the third world as a result of bad policy based from the global warming political movement. If this GW madness continues it won't be long before the poor of the west will also be starving in the dark. And more poor will be created.

But for God's sake no more cuddly polar bear stories. Something more substantial than that idiot on YouTube with his precautionary principle nonsense. None of those "Scientists Say" articles where they never tell you what scientists say exactly what, or where they say it.

No BBC, or Wikipedia please. Or at least tell me how they can be considered legitimate reference sources when they do stuff like what I just linked to.

So...you have a problem with "Newsweek" then? I'm not one for proving why I believe what I believe. And I never said it's leading us into a catastrophe. Those are your words.
I don't want to get involved in a fight here, but I've seen the damage that faulty--or faked--science can do. Especially when the media grabs it and runs with it, blowing it out of proportion and further twisting whatever facts were involved in the first place. On the other side of that, some people distrust all science, regardless of how legitimate it may be. So I don't think it's too much to ask that people back their views on a scientifically examinable stuff with science that's likely to be un-faked.

Or have I just been in school for too long? Is it unreasonable to expect people to provide proof of ideas that are provable?

Who's fighting? Just conversation as far as I'm concerned.

but I've seen the damage that faulty--or faked--science can do.
And what damage, is that, exactly? Where are your "links"? Just remember, scientists often disagree with each other just like us regulr folk.

Especially when the media grabs it and runs with it, blowing it out of proportion and further twisting whatever facts were involved in the first place.
Uh, like the media DOESN'T "run with it" on the flip side of that coin? The media is a business. We must always remember that.

On the other side of that, some people distrust all science, regardless of how legitimate it may be. So I don't think it's too much to ask that people back their views on a scientifically examinable stuff with science that's likely to be un-faked.
I don't refuse to back my views, but I don't feel the need to prove WHY I believe WHAT I believe. I can show you as many links that prove Global Warming as you can show me links that disprove it. That is why I don't feel the need to prove my beliefs.

Or have I just been in school for too long? Is it unreasonable to expect people to provide proof of ideas that are provable?

I don't know if you have been in school too long. How long have you been in school? It's not unreasonable to expect people to explain their ideas/theories- but it is fruitless to expect people to "provide proof" of their beliefs. And I DO believe in Global Warming. It's just like in any religious debate... no one can prove that "God" exists. Likewise, no one can prove God doesn't exist. You believe what you believe & you believe it for a reason - & likely that reason makes all kinds of good sense to you, while making those with opposing POVs go..."DUH?" 😉

But that's what makes the world go round, IMHO.

As I said, I didn't want to get in the middle of a fight. Or a debate, for that matter. Just stating my views on the requests to back up one's opinion. Have a nice day.

Weird... I typed out a response to you w/quote & submitted it... but it's not there. ???

Try try again...

All apologies - I don't mean this to come across as fighting- I just see it as a healthy debate. So ... sorry if I rained on your post! (please forgive me! I love you... I DO! you're a spikeaholic like me!)

I'm just saying that while I can post 100's of links that prove Global Warming, N4H can in turn, post 100's of links that DISprove it. That's why I say it is fruitless. ("no fruit for Buffy") I thought I explained my POV nicely, but N4H didn't see it that way, so I came back with more "proof".

Ok, I'll shut up (for) now. Hopefully THIS post will post.

It's on the page before this. My post started a new page.
Okay, this is one of those text-only medium things. I've noticed that in situations where people are emotionally involved with something, they tend to read people as hostile to their side, whether the person is or not. Unless the person uses lots of emoticons. 🙂 That, and there seems to be a lot of fighting on the boards lately, so maybe everyone's just in a bad mood.

Blondie Bear,
I agree, there is a lot of verbal fighting on the boards these days. Some people don't seem to realise that words, when used together can cause insults.
And you do know why some folk are in a bad mood don't you........it's global warming!.
I know who I blame these 'debates' on............those damned Polar Bears.

If those Polar Bears only live at one Pole, did they start that type of dancing?

I think it's a conspiricy. The bears and the penguins plan to jointly sweep towards the equator, conquoring everything in their way. It's nothing short of a plot for world domination.

If the Polar Bears had never gotten hooked on COKE, everything would be fine, now!

Proof? I disagree. What I requested was scientific support for the idea Man is causing crisis-level global warming. There is no "proof" for that. Certainly none in the links offered.

What you posted were links saying the IPCC supported the idea "global warming could lead to large-scale food and water shortages". You then posted a link to something from the IPCC which appeared to suggest if we accept the idea man is causing unprecedented, and dangerous levels of warming this is what may happen.

I saw no "proof" there man is causing unprecedented, and dangerous levels of warming. Simply what might happen if it existed.

I believe what you're going for there though is what's known as the consensus argument. It goes something like this...

"The United Nations created an organization called the IPCC, and commissioned reports, most recently in 2007, investigating the possibility man was having a significant effect on atmospheric warming. 2500 climate scientists were called upon to research the peer-reviewed literature. 95% signed on to a conclusion as follows.

"Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations."

Source

Usually when this argument is made there is also a reference to a long list of scientific organizations such as NAS which have signed onto that statement or similar.

Here's the problems with that argument...

First of all the IPCC was not made up of 2500 scientists with a specialty in climate science who examined man's contribution to warming. AR4 was contributed to by multi-field scientists most offered up from governments and non-governmental organizations, both with a stake in the policy concluded to in the report. You'll find social scientists, a lot of computer modelers, and some non-scientists.

The report is divided into, I think it's 4 sections. Only one of those sections deals with the science behind global warming theory. I believe it's referred to as WG 1. Only 600 are listed as contributors to WG 1. You just lost 1900 supposed scientists. Those 1900 contributed to sections of the report much like the one you linked to which assume the existence of crisis level anthropogenic warming then discuss how that might affect things. Of the 600 contributors to WG 1 few actually contributed, and the chapter of WG 1 which deals specifically with the statement above (I believe it's chapter 9) only 62 contributed to that one. Of those 62 many are shown to have potential vested interests, and most contributed nothing significant (stuff like typographical errors). You're left with about 15 actual contributors to that key chapter the 95% of 2500 is supposed to have signed on to, and most of those had potential vested interests. I beilieve it's just something like 3 or 4 independent contributors who agreed with the conclusions of the chapter.

Also when considering the IPCC it's important to draw the line between scientific contributions and political. The mandate of the IPCC is to look for support for the conclusion man is causing warming. The conclusion has already been drawn before the report is written. Most of the contributors have been assigned there from governments or organizations with an interest in supporting the Kyoto accord.

The IPCC is divided into the scientific report, and the policy makers report. The policy makers report is the one the public is most familiar with. That's the one where the radical claims of dangerous man made global warming are either insinuated, or stated. The actual scientific report is much edited, and rewritten to support the policy statement. It's all a massive hoodwink.

I considered linking you to a lot of information supporting all that but start with this opinion piece and this paper. If you want more, I've got it.

The next part of the consensus argument that goes "The science is settled. All scientists agree" comes from the assertion most scientific organizations agree with the conclusion man is causing crisis level global warming. Again though this doesn't come from the actual scientists in the organizations. This comes from the bureaucrats and policy makers in charge of those organizations. They have financing and power based reasons for coming to those conclusions.

Recently there was a big stink raised when the editor of the newsletter for the American Physics Society suggested "There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for the global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution".

In fact the whole idea of a scientific consensus is beginning to fall apart. Support for the idea there was ever a scientific consensus collapsed in 2008.

And here's another thing. Even if there were scientific consensus (and there's not) it wouldn't matter. Science is not run by consensus. I believe it was Einstein who said something like "All it takes to disprove a theory is one fact".
