Global Warming Enemy Revealed

The UN-supported "Livestock, Environment and Development Initiative" recently released a report entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, which explains that livestock is "responsible for 18 % of greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalent. This is a higher share than transport."

To quote the report: "The sector emits 37% of anthropogenic methane (with 23 times the global warming potential (GWP) of CO2) most of that from enteric fermentation by ruminants. It emits 65% of anthropogenic nitrous oxide (with 296 times the GWP of CO2), the great majority from manure. Livestock are also responsible for almost two-thirds of anthropogenic ammonia emissions, which contribute significantly to acid rain and acidification of ecosystems."

Well people are we going to allow these grass-eaters destroy our ecosystem? Or are we going to use our opposable thumbs and incisors and fight (actually digest) the enemy?

Ok, for me, global warming and the ozone and things are big part and deal for me, even enough so that I have my own group. Im so anti-ozone depletion its insane, but the problem is im also a vegetarian, soo, I think that the fact that animals are some of the problem is a kind of a miniscule thing, there is so much else wrong, like fossil fuels, we are still using gas and oil and things, instead of hurting harmless animals as a quick fix we should be trying to stop fossil fuels.

Also, the CFC's that are still around, yes true, theres fewer of them but there are still more around, big production companies actually emit CFC's into the air through their smoke and smog. There will always be some global warming, because truthfully we need it, I think that the animals and the humans(as themselves not their by-products) should be the only ones causing the globa warming.

They shouldn't pin this problem on the livestock just so it looks like they have a new goal, and a quick fix. That's not fair.

It is such a human thing to blame others for our shortcomings. You don't see bunnies walking around saying "that f11cking dog". Or if you do see that, you're beyond my help.

You know...there ARE a lot of starving people in the world. We could cut down on this threat immensely if we'd just FEED them. Solve two problems at once, hey?

Good lord, that's a lot of livestock, isn't it? I mean, given the human population of the world and our dependence on fossil fuels, to come up with numbers like this.....it's mind boogling. Did they have a 'test' group, I wonder? How did they arrive at these figures? And if this is true, why didn't the ozone layer disappear a long time ago? The animals were here before us; presumably they've been passing gas, crapping in the woods, and dying and decomposing for millions of years longer than us.

It's livestock rather than wildlife, so it's specifically animals raised for consumption that this refers to.

Animals produce an enormous amount of waste at every level of their rearing, from their foodstuff - fermented silage, which also pollutes water supplies and produces a lot of black plastic litter - to their maintenance - enormous quantities of animal sewage, water supplies again - and their processing, since meat waste must be incinerated since the BSE scare - to their packaging - plastics again for hygiene reasons. Which doesn't factor in pesticides used to grow their feedstuffs or fuel used by Farmer Bob to get from A to B, or Carbons produced when Farmer Bob illicitly burns his rubbish or the horrifying amounts of ammonia leaching out of your average chicken coop or the trees Farmer Bob has cleared to make room for more moo cows. However, all of this is dependent on demand. If everybody was vegetarian, livestock wouldn't be mass reared on such an industrial scale. [/farmgirl]

Vegetarians should all feel good about themselves for not contributing. Your karma is topped up enough for you to splash out. Treat yourself to kicking a homeless person. Go on, you've earned it.

In best Phoebe from Friends tradition.... I'm pregnant, and want to eat meat morning noon and night (amongst other things!). I craved a poached egg on steak at 7 am the other day. Pass me a knife and fork and I reckon I could eliminate about 3 of that 18% singlehandedly in a week.
